KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The DVD is full of great songs that invite singing along, rich visuals and seamless puppetry. Children are reminded that they have control over their own stories. This video will charm even the most serious adult while offering up lessons for preschoolers that make great use of humor just right for a young audience. Our kids jurors who watched it were quite enchanted. They loved the strange characters, from the counting caterpillar to the hatter who was mad and then sad. THOMAS & FRIENDS: THE RUNAWAY KITE

KIDS FIRST ENDORSED
THOMAS & FRIENDS: THE RUNAWAY KITE
HIT ENTERTAINMENT - TX
Series: SHORT AGES 2-5, ANIMATION
Topic - Family
Description - Through simple stories, kids learn about trains and also learn life lessons such as the idea that sometimes you can benefit from the help of friends.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The great thing about Thomas is that he sometimes makes poor decisions which preschoolers can relate to, such as the time he was so interested in finding the perfect gift that he forgot to invite friends to Hiro's party. He admits when he is wrong and corrects his "silly" behavior. The slow pace of the stories makes viewers feel as if they are seeing a book come to life. Thomas is a pleasure to view. It's fun seeing some live action mixed in with the cartoons like when an engineer introduces the episodes and takes care of Sir Topham Hat's mother's bird. Our preschool viewers love Thomas. They love the trains. They love all the different characters, each with its own personality and job to do. They like seeing how all the trains work together to help solve problems. The music is catchy and many of our kids hummed along.

SESAME STREET: LOVE THE EARTH
WARNER HOME VIDEO
Series: SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Family
Description - Saving the earth never gets old with Elmo and his gang.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Once again Sesame Street does a brilliant job mixing education with loads of fun. We learn why it's important not to litter and why it's best to completely use both sides of a piece of paper before throwing it away. Lots of songs and animated segments are mixed together with live action and puppetry, keeping young viewers glued to the screen. The messages of re-using and recycling are delivered in such a way that a preschooler gets it, yet the jokes appeal to an older crowd, making this DVD perfect for family viewing. Homeschoolers can use this as part of their science curriculum because children learn that they are a key factor in saving the earth. Our youth jurors enjoyed learning about recycling and how to help nature in a fun way. They love earth and like learning ways to help protect it. Their favorite part was when Elmo was leaving with his friends and said, "Bye park, bye trees, bye blue feathered swallowing swallow." They realized that the trees, swallow and park were their friends too.

Barney's friendly lesson reminds us that colorful rainbows can come on rainy days; Bob the Builder's project lacks color; Thomas the Tank Engine illustrates the significance of colors in communicating. For example, Fireman Sam uses "especially red" as a warning message. The information included surprised even our jurors and especially our kid jurors who liked it a lot. They loved seeing favorite characters such as Bob and Thomas, all at one time. The kids sang along with the Barney songs. A favorite part was when the dog went and dug the cell phone, and the people couldn't find it.

SPRING SCIENCE
WESTON WOODS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT AGES 5-8, ANIMATION
Topic - Family

Young kids won't want to miss a single splash. Narrated by Laura Dern, with music by Jerry Dale McFadden (6 min.); "Waiting for Wings" - Butterflies bloom as delicately as flowers in this visually magnificent story of beginnings, middles and ends: eggs, caterpillars and finally butterflies. Vocals and music by Crystal Taliefero and animation by Cha-Pow! (6 min.); "Goose" - A baby goose, adopted at birth by a family of woodchucks, feels like an outcast in everything she does until she discovers - all by herself - that she can fly. Narrated by Laura Dern, with music by John Jennings (7 min.)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Beautiful; visually very pleasing. These book-based stories are presented simply and true to the original story. We love the way action words are presented in "In A Small, Small Pond." "Goose" is a good tool for teaching about the Spring season and it would make a good comparison between it and Hans Christian Anderson's "Ugly Duckling." The whole collection instills a love of literature appreciation and increases learning through the activities included.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids loved the stories; found them interesting and fun to watch. They are also easy to understand. "A goose was being raised by woodchucks because her egg had rolled into their place. When she fell off a cliff and could fly, when realized she was a goose!" "The pictures are beautiful." STORIES ABOUT THE EARTH

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR

This title is in the KIDS FIRST! Film Festival - it may not be a regular, endorsed title
STORIES ABOUT THE EARTH
WESTON WOODS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT AGES 5-8, ANIMATION
Topic - Family
Description - Includes 2 shorts: "Johnny Appleseed" - John Chapman's (aka Johnny Appleseed) legacy of botanical achievements and the stories he shared with children are presented here at their very best in verse and art. Narrated by Mary McDonnell, with music by Randy Scruggs (11min.); and "Miss Rumphius" - Inspired by a true-life story, Miss Rumphius shows us how we can all make the word a more beautiful place with a simple handful of seeds. Narrated by Clair Danes, with music by John Jennings (17 min.)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This simple story about two remarkable characters will give children some worthwhile ideals to consider. Gently and clearly conveys stories with accompanying music and art that fit the period and theme of the individual stories. The poem about Johnny Appleseed includes many of the wonderful characteristics of his life that made him an American legend. The second short, "Miss Rumphius" is based on the true life actions of 'The Lupine Lady,' Miss Hilda Hamlin. Its sentiment that "you must do something to make the world more beautiful" is a wonderful and embraceable idea. Both stories tell about a person who has thoughtfully made a contribution of beauty to our country. Both follow a life cycle from childhood to adulthood. The poetry and music of Johnny Appleseed is somewhat folksy with the sounds of apples crunching, wagon wheels rolling, birds flying and the campfire crackling. Violins and piano music transport us to a later time and place, changing in tempo as Miss Rhumbhius lives out her life amid the sounds of a pat's purr, a car engine and children playing. "There is a sparkle on the ocean and the lupines blow in the wind."
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Big hit with the kids. "Thank you for the movie mommy, I liked it a lot." "I liked when Alice sat on her grandfather's lap." "My favorite part was when Alice grew up and was planting the lupines." Kids hummed along to the piano music. They discussed what faraway place they would like to travel to, what they would do to make the world more beautiful and what they would like to plant. They imagined what it would be like to travel, like Johnny Appleseed, alone and in the wilderness. Kids enjoyed following the activities on the on-disc learning guide. "We learned a lot from this."

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A good piece to have in your video arsenal of learning about safety. It takes a subject that can be hard to explain to children and turns it into fun. Shows situations, stories, games and songs that get the message across. Different aged kids will pick up on different things, but the pace is slow enough for even the youngest. SAFARI ANIMAL DISCOVERY
KIDZ ON SAFARI NEW YORK INC
Series: INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY, AGES 5-8
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Two brothers, Mugo and Tugo, go on Safari to discover the magic of Africa, from animals to culture and their roots. They discover more than they expected.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Follows two little brothers on a safari trip, learning about the animals they encounter. There are two short quizzes to help children remember what they learned. The next best thing to going on a real safari. Great for building excitement prior to a visit to the zoo. Educational as well as entertaining. Kids will enjoy the ABC song, sung by African children. Promotes a positive view of Africa and their animals. Enjoyed the use of nicknames for animals to engage the kids - "Here comes Mr. Temper." Pop-ups appear on screen with "fun facts" so kids can put information together with the animal they are viewing on-screen. African music enhanced the theme. Some adults appreciated the border that sometimes appeared on the screen, saying it helps to draw attention of pre-schoolers, other found it detracted from the film. A good media tool to introduce young children to the conservation and appreciation of wildlife. After viewing with children, one juror said, "Yeah, this is definitely a keeper."
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The children love the musical exploration of some of Africa's safari animals. It really makes kids want to know more. Children are engaged and full of questions/comments throughout, "Can I pet a flamingo," "Tortoises are good animals," "My favorite animal is the snake." They like the African children singing the ABC song about the animals, learning that there are at least as many animals as there are letters in the alphabet. Some try to guess which animal will be chosen for each letter in the song. "Beautiful, I like how the giraffe stands when he is drinking water." "The brothers were excited and followed the rules of the safari - be good to each other." "I really liked the question and answer part." "It taught me about animals I didn't know - I never saw a water buffalo before," "It told me some names of animals I didn't know, but didn't show a picture of them, so I want to look them up." (Francine Brocaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - In this sequel, not only his curiosity but his big heart gets George into a little trouble but also a lot of fun as he helps a new friend. Tim Curry, Jamie Kennedy, and Matt Lauer all lend their voices to this fun adventure about caring for others. Like a lot of parents, Ted, the man in the yellow hat, is a little too busy with work and has left George feeling friendless. Luckily the Piccadilly Magic Circus comes to town, providing George with the opportunity to spend more time with Ted and make friends with Kayla the juggling elephant. Upon discovering his new friend misses her elephant brother and sister all the way across the country in California, George and anyone young at heart, understands that the right thing to do is reunite this elephant family. George follows his heart and does what is right by taking off with Kayla and Ted for a cross-country adventure. However, trouble ensues when everyone at home thinks the magic juggling elephant has been kidnapped. This beautifully animated feature is filled with slapstick comedy, hilarious action sequences and a valuable lesson about family. Witnessing George and his friends help each other, kids and parents are reminded of the true importance of caring for friends and always making time for family.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - A hit. "I think Curious George is kind of a crazy monkey in this movie." They all asked to watch it again. They wanted to learn more about trains. Some walked in and out and played during the DVD, but they all said it was fun and wanted more. They liked that the girl took care of the elephant; and related to the character of the girl "she's a girl, like me!" Kids love Curious George, though younger ones may not understand the story as well, they all enjoy watching the monkey and his antics.

Description - Learn how to face your fears and embrace your talents in this empowering collection of "Bob the Builder" episodes. Bob and his gang take you step-by-step through the building process, showing that it takes careful planning and lots of teamwork to get the job done.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - In the five animated episodes Scrap learns that observing others can help him work better in the long run; Lofty learns that water won't hurt him; Roley learns that it's better to work as a team and that his ideas aren't necessarily the best ideas; Scoop learns that builders can be artists and being an artist doesn't necessarily mean that you have to paint; and Lofty learns to face his fears with his eyes wide open and discovers that doing so gives him the understanding that there was nothing to be afraid of after all. This title assists children in working through problems or emotional issues and promotes service to and compassion for others.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I liked this movie because it told you not to be afraid because there's no such things as monsters. It looked really good because they didn't mess up the cartoon. They were nice to each other. When one machine wanted to build something, the other machines told him to watch and learn, and they were nice to him. My favorite part was when Lofty thought that the water made it so that you fall apart if it touches you so he was afraid of it. He went into the water by accident and learned that if you go into the water, you don't fall apart. I think my friends would like this because they like big machines.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Fun-filled silly animation with a mix of familiar songs. Fast paced, colorful, very appealing. Every character shows love, fun and spirit. They really make you want to get up and dance along. The songs are a mix of original tunes and familiar ones. For example, the ABC song is sung but to a different tune.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children definitely moved along to the music and were engaged. They said familiar words such as "monkey" and "bus." The one year old didn't watch at all. The 2-year-olds were more interested. They enjoyed the music and seeing the characters who they could identify with. They danced and pointed out names of things on screen. Some of the songs dragged a big and they lost interest. Some 4 and 5-year-olds were interested as they could actually sing along. Series: SERIES, AGES 2-5, ANIMATED
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Everyone in Wuzzleburg is getting involved in saving the planet! In these earth-friendly episodes, Wubbzy, Widget, Walden and Daizy must find a new place for the Wuzzle Bears to live, think up creative ways to reuse juice bottles and learn to grow their own doodleberries. Your pre-schooler will discover important lessons about ecology, harmony, and personal responsibility while enjoying plenty of singing and dancing.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The earth is something to celebrate as Wubbzy and his pals go green for Earth Day. We learn about re-using and recycling through the fun, animated tales. We learn about how some good ideas go bad when building a gigantic new playground results in displacing hundreds of animals whose habitat is the trees they are about to chop down. Wubbzy and his friends learn about the importance of water and then discover how plastic water bottles are creating more pollution. Song segments between the episodes re-emphasize the lessons and are catchy enough to have your kids singing along. Our young viewers loved it. Their favorite part is when Wubbzy figured out that he could make playgrounds out of trees so the animals could be saved. Then, he did it. While we get a strong save-the-earth message, the DVD doesn't come off as too preachy. This video creates an interest in the environment and promotes pro-activity and appreciation of self and others
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - All the kids love Wubbzy and cheered for him when the DVD began. Children loved the butterflies. "Wubbzy's friends watched out for him and didn't let him eat all of the doodle berries." Children sang and danced during the show. The girls ran to get their butterfly wings and play butterflies after watching. Everyone loved this!

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATED
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about objects in the home, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovable, non-frightening characters, easy-to-understand stories with gentle humor and great educational value for developing early language skills. The video encourages engagement and participation with its questions such as, "What sound is that?" "What words do you remember?" There are 4 vignettes: Bath time, Who's Hiding in the House, Sounds in My House and Clean-up Time. The total time of the video is 30 minutes but each story can be viewed separately. The content is suitable for very young children with friendly characters, relatable stories, lovely cadence of voice-over narration. Its gentle humor and positive messages are just right for this age. The four characters include two male characters and two female characters. The characters' genders are recognizable, race is not a factor and the characters are typically middle class as each has its own home, clean clothes and toys. The stories respect the fact that children can get dirty (while eating or painting) but lets children know its okay to get dirty and that one must later take a bath to clean up. The stories have gentle humor as the characters get dirty all over again even after they take their baths. There are no repercussions if one gets dirty again which is a forgiving, accepting message. The simple animation style is appropriate for very young children as is the use of simple sentence structure. The voice over by the narrator is warm and loving. The use of sound effects is education and gentle such as the sound of the phone ringing, the doorbell, birds chirping, splashing water, bounding of a ball. The use of color adds to the visual experience and is not glaringly brilliant. In all four stories, repetition is used. Vocabulary is appropriate to this age with a recap at the end of each vignette when the narrator asks, "What words do you remember?" For example, in thee Bath time vignette, the new words that are emphasized are bath, bubbles, boat and soap. The interaction between the characters is cooperative, kind, and friendly.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The kids giggled, danced, clapped their hands and were all engaged. They repeated the new vocabulary words such as door, couch, chair, table. Some growled and made claws with their hands and pretended to be Larry the Lion. Some, who had watched other titles in the series, recognized the characters and called out the names of Larry, Iggy Dee-Dee and Edward. They responded to the narrator's questions, "What words do you remember?" with their new vocabulary words. Kids loved the "Sounds in My House" section. When a visual of a phone appeared onscreen, they spontaneously said, " phone." When the narrator says bye bye to Larry, they repeated it and waved as well. This is obviously well planned out for this age group, who loved it, learned new words and found reinforcement for social skills they are developing. It encourages cooperation and friendship.

Description - So Smart! Is an award-winning brand, trusted by parents for over a decade. In this DVD, So Smart! Friends Edward, Iggy, Dee Dee and Larry will first introduce your little one to simple words about pets, then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery and soothing music, make So Smart! A winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This DVD provides an entertaining supplemental to children's language development. The narration and animation is sweet and simple. Use repetition but keeps it to a level that we don't lose interest. Very predictable, which is good for this age group. It offers a way to watch and hear things, that if not familiar, can become so and a nice easy to watch pace. Allows for interaction, asking questions that little ones can easily answer. Pets are a great topic of interest for toddlers.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it though some needed some prompting to engage in the interactive sections. With adult interaction, kids repeated words and responded with answers. When they saw a cat, one child yelled "kitty" and another one "meow", using the language skills they already had and applying them to the situation. All the kids who paid attention seemed to enjoy the animation and sounds. Got less attention from the kids who were not really ready for language development of this kind. Overall a nice video for kids ready to learn new words and interested in watching media on TV.

Description - From the So Smart! Series which teaches children key words using an easy-to-follow, present-tense narrative and repetition. In this DVD, So Smart! Friends Edward, Iggy, Dee Dee and Larry will first introduce your little one to simple words about things that go, then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery and soothing music make this suitable for ages 1-3.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Wonderful stories, animation, characters and music, blended with an appropriate pace. Teaches and entertains at the same time. High quality animation kids will love and keep parents interested as well. Featured pictures of things kids love - cars, trucks, trains, boats and other transportation vehicles. Broken down into five smaller stories so you can easily watch a little at a time. Stories are more simplistic at first, then with more problem-solving, such as the story about the chicken who has a piano and wants to take it home, but she needs a truck first. Each story highlights a different character and kids are given the opportunity to participate by saying what they learned.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children really enjoyed interacting, with younger children yelling "doggie" or "chicken" at the animals they recognized. Boys especially liked the vehicles and yelled out the answers at the end of each section. Loved to yell out during the "what words did you learn" sections. Kids noticed the colors of the backgrounds and it created a ton of discussion between all of the children, even the one-year old!

Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about nighttime, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovely, simple animation and calm tone by the narrator. Flows nicely and has good predictability which children this age love. Offers a way for children to watch and hear things that, if unfamiliar, can become familiar. The video uses words that the children should already be hearing and mixes them with words that may be unfamiliar. This may help their vocabulary grow, particularly if a parent or caregiver watches along and emphasizes the words in other contexts, outside of the video itself. The animal characters are very cute. The colors are bright but not over the top. The use of the music is thoughtful and suitable to the program and audience. This video makes a good supplement to a child's learning development and is repetitive and predictable enough to work and yet not become tedious. Among the very best of DVDs for the 1-3 year old group.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Very engaging. Easy to play in segments. The 2 and almost 2's stayed focused for the entire show, saying words for objects they knew. As each segment began, one 2-year-old would say, "Ooh! More!" The 10-month-old looked up now and then but was more interested in his toys than the DVD. The 2's enjoyed a second viewing as much as the first. One 22-month-old, who is more verbal than the 25-month-old, said words without prompting - from the beginning he said, "moon, star, night night, book, light, etc." There are really no opportunities for singing, dancing, playing along, but the 2-year-old oohed and smiled when he liked something. When the narrator asked, "Let's see what we can remember…" they didn't respond. When the adult facilitator asked the same thing, they did. They didn't grasp the idea of someone onscreen asking them a question. Some 4 and 5-year-olds also viewed it, found it darling. But, of course, they already knew these words.

Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about being outside, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Really loved this DVD. Great music. Loved the piano music. Nice uses of pauses to catch a child's attention. For example, pause then say "leaves fall" and then see them fall. The music is toe-tapping. Pace is great, moves very smoothly and logically from one story to the next. Coloration is pleasant. Some infant DVDs are just blasting full of brilliant colors, this is much more subtle and thus, more enjoyable. There are a couple of instances where the backgrounds blended too well with the characters but that was infrequent. Great use of repetition. Words are restated, then shown again with an image. The producers seem to respect that babies and toddlers need to have their attention caught, then caught again. The pause effect addresses this well. Good use of exercises to encourage memory skills for what was shown. This worked particularly well for slow learning children or a child who takes longer to express himself verbally. The activity guide that comes with it can be printed out and used to reinforce what has been watched. There is also a website to go to for more information about the video and the company. All of our jurors said they would buy this for their own use.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The children were very engaged, particular the 2-year-olds. They laughed at some parts and repeated words from the video. All the children liked the segments with the animals in it best. The boys in particular liked the animals and the girls liked repeating the words they heard. All enjoyed counting along. It was a bit slow for some of the 2's but the 6 month old enjoyed it a lot until he lost interest at the end. A couple of 5-year-olds watched it but didn't find it interesting enough to stay with it. They went on to other things.

A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Sweet, easy to understand, simple stories, some gentle rhymes (day/hurray), lovely production values and delightful, upbeat music. The narrator is easy to listen to, the characters are non-threatening. The DVD encourages the child to participate by asking questions such as, "What words do you remember?" There are a series of short vignettes including: Iggy Gets Dressed, Let's Play in the Snow, Hats for Everyone, Edward Finds an Umbrella, and Edward's New Shoes. The use of repetition helps children learn new words. Participation is encouraged by asking the viewer questions they can easily answer. This is an easy re-introduction to colors, seasons, numbers, seasonal activities and getting dressed. The characters are very likable, they behave in friendly and caring ways toward one another. They resemble children and genders are portrayed by the little girl wearing the color pink and the boy wearing the color blue. The stories are gentle and portray simple frustrations such as a child might experience in life: a button falling off, the rain coming, the snow melting, a zipper breaks. Characters are shown dealing with these little inconveniences in such a way that we can see how easy it is to replicate. Very nicely done, a plus for any toddler library.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. A multicultural group of Hispanic, Asian and Caucasian kids all enjoyed it. The girls seemed more transfixed than the boys but both clapped, pointed and waved at various times. Several children remembered and called out the characters' names. Several called out "Hello" when the characters said, "hello." Many counted along with the onscreen counting. Most responded when the narrator asked, "What words do you remember?" They answered, "snow, umbrella, etc." When asked how much they liked it, all said, "Great!"

Description - Explore with Gus Nightingale, a six-year-old naturalist, as he travels to an island off the coast of Rhode Island. Gus discovers the challenges faced by newly hatched chicks as they struggle to make it to adulthood.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The six-year-old narrator of this documentary is absolutely charming, and more importantly easy to understand. He is obviously quite comfortable in this environment and quite self-sufficient as he carries his own backpack and walks around the island. We see him taking proper safety precautions like wearing a life jacket when in the boat or drinking water to stay hydrated.. Weakest point is the lighting, or lack of, making it look unprofessional. But, the information is good and I think kids will enjoy this.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Non-narrative film with mediocre production levels. The dog, Daisy is cute and the segment at the zoo the most appealing of the three. The audience for this is limited - dog lovers would probably enjoy it most.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Daisy is cute but even our dog lovers found this a bit slow moving. It can be fun to watch shows like this with very young children as it shows some everyday activities that they might recognize or call out the names for. However, doesn't hold children's attention for long. There is no real story being told. Daisy, the dog visits places and the story evolves from where she goes.

GRANDPA READ'S QUIET TIME TALES VOL. 1
QUIET TIME PRODUCTIONS, LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT AGES 5-8, ANIM
Topic - Family
Description - Grandpa Read is a gentle, loving grandfather who reads classic children's stories to calm them during their daily "quiet time." Here, he reads Three Bears, Cinderella and three more stories accompanied by commissioned artwork.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A sweet presentation by a venerable older man who reads stories to children. The location is inviting, with fireplace, rocking chair, and devoted dog. Grandpa Read invites children to gather round and listen quietly to some familiar stories including The Three Bears, The Talking Fish, Puss 'n Boots, Cinderella and Polly of the Circus. The stories are accompanied with simple, coloring book-style images. The focus is on the narrator rather than the images from the stories. After each story, he talks with the children about the choices made by the characters in the story. The narrator is pleasant but not exceptional. He uses some expression but doesn't change his voice when changing characters. So few children have a grandpa, or even a parent to read to them that this fills a real gap. Very enjoyable.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. "I liked it a lot." "I love quiet times listening to fairytales." "An old man named Grandpa Read read us stories." "The pictures in the books were colorful." "I would like to sit in that room with all the books." "I'd watch it again. I liked most of it."

YOUNG MINDS - NUMBERS AND COUNTING
MATHTUTORDVD.COM
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Teaches children numbers and counting from 1-10 through animation and images of nature.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - As a program designed to teach pre-verbal children the numbers one through ten, it does a pretty good job. The classical background music is pleasant enough but after a while it begins to feel like I'm listening to elevator music. It is well produced with clear images and audio and a pleasant narration by a child. However, I am convinced that unless this is watched together with an adult, a child under the age of 2 would not get much out of it.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Mixed reviews. "It was happy." "It was pretty nice." "I counted with it." "I liked the lions." "I wanted to see sharks." One 4-year-old counted along and easily named all the objects. After a while however, she asked to watch a different DVD. Some two-year-olds started recognizing numbers. One two-year-old lost interest in a few minutes and was quite verbal about not wanting to watch more. End result of our testing with kids - some liked it, some didn't. None wanted to watch the entire thing.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Based on the timeless classic book by Dr. Seuss, the imaginative elephant Horton hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite his friends who think he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help. Featuring a memorable cast of voices including Jim Carrey, Carol Burnett and Steve Carell, this is a faithful and hilarious adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic book with outstanding talent, vibrant animation, nonsensical rhymes and expressive characters. Carrey's portrayal of Horton is charming. Thankfully, they didn't fall into the potty humor trap for this film which is refreshing. The film's message is about respect and having faith in things that can't be seen. The message, "a person's a person no matter how small" introduces kids to thoughtful philosophical questions.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Horton, the happy elephant from the creation of Dr. Seuss, finds adventure and wisdom when he encounters a whole village of little people on a speck atop a pink blossom floating in the air. Horton, the only 'large' person who hears them must overcome the doubt and ridicule of his friends as he seeks to protect his new found, very tiny, world by placing it in a safe place on a high mountain top. As the possibility of making it all the way to safety becomes harder and harder, Horton (voice by Jim Carey) becomes more and more determined and pushes himself to run across cold snow, climb dangerous roads, and depend on the love of his family who believe in him. This clever, engaging film is delightful in its' crisp animation. Much to the surprise of the townspeople who do not share in Horton's imagination and spirit, they too come to hear the 'Who' and realize that we all, however big or small, matter-an engaging lesson for both adults and children. This film, with humor and sensitivity, promotes the awareness of diversity and shows positive pride in following one's truth. A fun, forgiving, discovery with Horton, the elephant.

DON'T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!
WESTON WOODS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT, AGES 2-5, ANIM
Topic - Family
Description - When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place -- a pigeon! But you've never met one like this before. Narrated by Mo Willems and Jon Scieszka with animation by Pete List. Includes bonus interview with Mo Willems.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The story is about a pigeon, but mimics a child having a tantrum over something they can't have. It tells a fun story, holding your attention. Could be a good spring board for discussion on behavior with a child. Encourages children to interact with the DVD, and tell the pigeon that he can't drive the bus. Some viewers might not appreciate the pigeon going off in a truck at the end. Overall a fun story.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Very good. I like how it has the people speaking, like actual people and not just the narrator. I like the pigeon's reactions to all their answers like he has a really mad face as if he was saying "Come on."

These stories have a religious overtone, reminding us that our creator is always with us and that God will help us through our everyday difficulties.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. It showed you that you could face your fears and it's not so bad. "When they're talking about the creator, I think they are talking about God." I think my friends would love it because they would like the characters. It's kind of funny like when the woodchuck blew up the raft then the penguin said, "Hey, I found a raft!" Then the frog asked the woodchuck why he was out of breath. The voices were good. It looked pretty realistic for puppets, but sometimes you could see strings. That surprises you because they seem so real.

CRAZY HAIR DAY

CRAZY HAIR DAY
WESTON WOODS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT AGES 5-8
Topic - Family
Description - Stanley arrives at school, all set to celebrate Crazy Hair Day, only to find out he has mixed up the date with School Picture Day. In this uplifting story of friendship and kindness, what starts out as a worst-ever experience takes a surprising turn as Stanley's best friend and his classmates concoct a creative show of solidarity. Narrated by Zach Braff, with music by Barney Saltzberg and Eric Eckstein. Directed by Virginia Wilkos. Includes a fun bonus interview with Barney Saltzberg.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovely short film that reaches you on a human level and demonstrates positive moral choices. The story flows beautifully, connecting you with the characters. It makes the viewer feel the excitement of unusual school days such as pajama day and then adds enough conflict (going to school on picture day thinking it's crazy hair day) to keep it exciting. Many kids will identify with being in an embarrassing situation or seeing someone else deal with an embarrassing situation. This title models compassion as the classmates rally around and make their own crazy head gear to make Stanley feel more comfortable. All the animals work together in the class and show respect for one another. There is a strong message of friendship, even on Stanley's behalf, as he realizes his class is a team and he's an essential part of it. It helps identify embarrassment and teaches kids how to cope with awkward situations. This is a great little film that shows the importance of each member of a group and demonstrates how to deal with uncomfortable situations.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. "I liked it because there were some silly parts such as when he comes into school with the wild and crazy hair." "On a 1-5 scale, I would give it a 4 that I would watch it again." "It's a very creative story that my friends would like too." "A guy thinks it's crazy hair day but it's actually picture day. His hair is all weird but it ends up happy." "We have Spirit week at our school where we do crazy things." "All the characters were animals." "I liked when the guy ran into the bathroom and everyone else wore stuff on their head to make them look crazy. They helped him feel more comfortable." "It was a lot like my school." "I want to know what other schools have crazy hair day. Mine does mismatch day and gender blender day." "It's not a perfect movie, but it's a pretty good one."
