(Francine Brocaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - In this sequel, not only his curiosity but his big heart gets George into a little trouble but also a lot of fun as he helps a new friend. Tim Curry, Jamie Kennedy, and Matt Lauer all lend their voices to this fun adventure about caring for others. Like a lot of parents, Ted, the man in the yellow hat, is a little too busy with work and has left George feeling friendless. Luckily the Piccadilly Magic Circus comes to town, providing George with the opportunity to spend more time with Ted and make friends with Kayla the juggling elephant. Upon discovering his new friend misses her elephant brother and sister all the way across the country in California, George and anyone young at heart, understands that the right thing to do is reunite this elephant family. George follows his heart and does what is right by taking off with Kayla and Ted for a cross-country adventure. However, trouble ensues when everyone at home thinks the magic juggling elephant has been kidnapped. This beautifully animated feature is filled with slapstick comedy, hilarious action sequences and a valuable lesson about family. The deeper theme of how family is more important than work is complemented by a younger sense of humor and very silly characters. Witnessing George and his friends help each other, kids and parents are reminded of the true importance of caring for friends and always making time for family.

Description - Learn how to face your fears and embrace your talents in this empowering collection of "Bob the Builder" episodes. Bob and his gang take you step-by-step through the building process, showing that it takes careful planning and lots of teamwork to get the job done.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - In the five animated episodes Scrap learns that observing others can help him work better in the long run; Lofty learns that water won't hurt him; Roley learns that it's better to work as a team and that his ideas aren't necessarily the best ideas; Scoop learns that builders can be artists and being an artist doesn't necessarily mean that you have to paint; and Lofty learns to face his fears with his eyes wide open and discovers that doing so gives him the understanding that there was nothing to be afraid of after all. This title assists children in working through problems or emotional issues and promotes service to and compassion for others.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I liked this movie because it told you not to be afraid because there's no such things as monsters. It looked really good because they didn't mess up the cartoon. They were nice to each other. When one machine wanted to build something, the other machines told him to watch and learn, and they were nice to him. My favorite part was when Lofty thought that the water made it so that you fall apart if it touches you so he was afraid of it. He went into the water by accident and learned that if you go into the water, you don't fall apart. I think my friends would like this because they like big machines.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATED
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about objects in the home, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovable, non-frightening characters, easy-to-understand stories with gentle humor and great educational value for developing early language skills. The video encourages engagement and participation with its questions such as, "What sound is that?" "What words do you remember?" There are 4 vignettes: Bath time, Who's Hiding in the House, Sounds in My House and Clean-up Time. The total time of the video is 30 minutes but each story can be viewed separately. The content is suitable for very young children with friendly characters, relatable stories, lovely cadence of voice-over narration. Its gentle humor and positive messages are just right for this age. The four characters include two male characters and two female characters. The characters' genders are recognizable, race is not a factor and the characters are typically middle class as each has its own home, clean clothes and toys. The stories respect the fact that children can get dirty (while eating or painting) but lets children know its okay to get dirty and that one must later take a bath to clean up. The stories have gentle humor as the characters get dirty all over again even after they take their baths. There are no repercussions if one gets dirty again which is a forgiving, accepting message. The simple animation style is appropriate for very young children as is the use of simple sentence structure. The voice over by the narrator is warm and loving. The use of sound effects is education and gentle such as the sound of the phone ringing, the doorbell, birds chirping, splashing water, bounding of a ball. The use of color adds to the visual experience and is not glaringly brilliant. In all four stories, repetition is used. Vocabulary is appropriate to this age with a recap at the end of each vignette when the narrator asks, "What words do you remember?" For example, in thee Bath time vignette, the new words that are emphasized are bath, bubbles, boat and soap. The interaction between the characters is cooperative, kind, and friendly.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The kids giggled, danced, clapped their hands and were all engaged. They repeated the new vocabulary words such as door, couch, chair, table. Some growled and made claws with their hands and pretended to be Larry the Lion. Some, who had watched other titles in the series, recognized the characters and called out the names of Larry, Iggy Dee-Dee and Edward. They responded to the narrator's questions, "What words do you remember?" with their new vocabulary words. Kids loved the "Sounds in My House" section. When a visual of a phone appeared onscreen, they spontaneously said, " phone." When the narrator says bye bye to Larry, they repeated it and waved as well. This is obviously well planned out for this age group, who loved it, learned new words and found reinforcement for social skills they are developing. It encourages cooperation and friendship.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - NIGHTTIME

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - NIGHTTIME
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about nighttime, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovely, simple animation and calm tone by the narrator. Flows nicely and has good predictability which children this age love. Offers a way for children to watch and hear things that, if unfamiliar, can become familiar. The video uses words that the children should already be hearing and mixes them with words that may be unfamiliar. This may help their vocabulary grow, particularly if a parent or caregiver watches along and emphasizes the words in other contexts, outside of the video itself. The animal characters are very cute. The colors are bright but not over the top. The use of the music is thoughtful and suitable to the program and audience. This video makes a good supplement to a child's learning development and is repetitive and predictable enough to work and yet not become tedious. Among the very best of DVDs for the 1-3 year old group.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Very engaging. Easy to play in segments. The 2 and almost 2's stayed focused for the entire show, saying words for objects they knew. As each segment began, one 2-year-old would say, "Ooh! More!" The 10-month-old looked up now and then but was more interested in his toys than the DVD. The 2's enjoyed a second viewing as much as the first. One 22-month-old, who is more verbal than the 25-month-old, said words without prompting - from the beginning he said, "moon, star, night night, book, light, etc." There are really no opportunities for singing, dancing, playing along, but the 2-year-old oohed and smiled when he liked something. When the narrator asked, "Let's see what we can remember…" they didn't respond. When the adult facilitator asked the same thing, they did. They didn't grasp the idea of someone onscreen asking them a question. Some 4 and 5-year-olds also viewed it, found it darling. But, of course, they already knew these words.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - OUTSIDE
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about being outside, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Really loved this DVD. Great music. Loved the piano music. Nice uses of pauses to catch a child's attention. For example, pause then say "leaves fall" and then see them fall. The music is toe-tapping. Pace is great, moves very smoothly and logically from one story to the next. Coloration is pleasant. Some infant DVDs are just blasting full of brilliant colors, this is much more subtle and thus, more enjoyable. There are a couple of instances where the backgrounds blended too well with the characters but that was infrequent. Great use of repetition. Words are restated, then shown again with an image. The producers seem to respect that babies and toddlers need to have their attention caught, then caught again. The pause effect addresses this well. Good use of exercises to encourage memory skills for what was shown. This worked particularly well for slow learning children or a child who takes longer to express himself verbally. The activity guide that comes with it can be printed out and used to reinforce what has been watched. There is also a website to go to for more information about the video and the company. All of our jurors said they would buy this for their own use.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The children were very engaged, particular the 2-year-olds. They laughed at some parts and repeated words from the video. All the children liked the segments with the animals in it best. The boys in particular liked the animals and the girls liked repeating the words they heard. All enjoyed counting along. It was a bit slow for some of the 2's but the 6 month old enjoyed it a lot until he lost interest at the end. A couple of 5-year-olds watched it but didn't find it interesting enough to stay with it. They went on to other things.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - GET DRESSED

Series: SHORT AGES 0- 2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about getting dressed, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Sweet, easy to understand, simple stories, some gentle rhymes (day/hurray), lovely production values and delightful, upbeat music. The narrator is easy to listen to, the characters are non-threatening. The DVD encourages the child to participate by asking questions such as, "What words do you remember?" There are a series of short vignettes including: Iggy Gets Dressed, Let's Play in the Snow, Hats for Everyone, Edward Finds an Umbrella, and Edward's New Shoes. The use of repetition helps children learn new words. Participation is encouraged by asking the viewer questions they can easily answer. This is an easy re-introduction to colors, seasons, numbers, seasonal activities and getting dressed. The characters are very likable, they behave in friendly and caring ways toward one another. They resemble children and genders are portrayed by the little girl wearing the color pink and the boy wearing the color blue. The stories are gentle and portray simple frustrations such as a child might experience in life: a button falling off, the rain coming, the snow melting, a zipper breaks. Characters are shown dealing with these little inconveniences in such a way that we can see how easy it is to replicate. Very nicely done, a plus for any toddler library.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. A multicultural group of Hispanic, Asian and Caucasian kids all enjoyed it. The girls seemed more transfixed than the boys but both clapped, pointed and waved at various times. Several children remembered and called out the characters' names. Several called out "Hello" when the characters said, "hello." Many counted along with the onscreen counting. Most responded when the narrator asked, "What words do you remember?" They answered, "snow, umbrella, etc." When asked how much they liked it, all said, "Great!"

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Explore with Gus Nightingale, a six-year-old naturalist, as he travels to an island off the coast of Rhode Island. Gus discovers the challenges faced by newly hatched chicks as they struggle to make it to adulthood.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The six-year-old narrator of this documentary is absolutely charming, and more importantly easy to understand. He is obviously quite comfortable in this environment and quite self-sufficient as he carries his own backpack and walks around the island. We see him taking proper safety precautions like wearing a life jacket when in the boat or drinking water to stay hydrated.. Weakest point is the lighting, or lack of, making it look unprofessional. But, the information is good and I think kids will enjoy this.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Non-narrative film with mediocre production levels. The dog, Daisy is cute and the segment at the zoo the most appealing of the three. The audience for this is limited - dog lovers would probably enjoy it most.

GRANDPA READ'S QUIET TIME TALES VOL. 1

KIDS FIRST ENDORSED
GRANDPA READ'S QUIET TIME TALES VOL. 1
QUIET TIME PRODUCTIONS, LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT AGES 5-8, ANIM
Topic - Family
Description - Grandpa Read is a gentle, loving grandfather who reads classic children's stories to calm them during their daily "quiet time." Here, he reads Three Bears, Cinderella and three more stories accompanied by commissioned artwork.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A sweet presentation by a venerable older man who reads stories to children. The location is inviting, with fireplace, rocking chair, and devoted dog. Grandpa Read invites children to gather round and listen quietly to some familiar stories including The Three Bears, The Talking Fish, Puss 'n Boots, Cinderella and Polly of the Circus. The stories are accompanied with simple, coloring book-style images. The focus is on the narrator rather than the images from the stories. After each story, he talks with the children about the choices made by the characters in the story. The narrator is pleasant but not exceptional. He uses some expression but doesn't change his voice when changing characters. So few children have a grandpa, or even a parent to read to them that this fills a real gap. Very enjoyable.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. "I liked it a lot." "I love quiet times listening to fairytales." "An old man named Grandpa Read read us stories." "The pictures in the books were colorful." "I would like to sit in that room with all the books." "I'd watch it again. I liked most of it."

DR. SEUSS' HORTON HEARS A WHO

KIDS FIRST ENDORSED
DR. SEUSS' HORTON HEARS A WHO
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX FILM CORPORATION
Series: FEATURE, AGES 5-12, ANIM
Topic - Family
Description - One of Dr. Seuss' most beloved stories roars to life as never before in this enormous animated adventure that proves "a person's a person no matter how small." A playful pachyderm named Horton becomes a reluctant hero when he discovers the microscopic city of Who-ville on a floating speck of dust and embarks on a hilarious adventure to save the town from the dangers of the jungle. Featuring a who's who of superstar voice talent, including Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Carol Burnett, this heartwarming hit comedy delivers loads of laughs and tons of fun for the whole family!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Based on the timeless classic book by Dr. Seuss, the imaginative elephant Horton hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite his friends who think he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help. Featuring a memorable cast of voices including Jim Carrey, Carol Burnett and Steve Carell, this is a faithful and hilarious adaptation of Dr. Seuss' classic book with outstanding talent, vibrant animation, nonsensical rhymes and expressive characters. Carrey's portrayal of Horton is charming. Thankfully, they didn't fall into the potty humor trap for this film which is refreshing. The film's message is about respect and having faith in things that can't be seen. The message, "a person's a person no matter how small" introduces kids to thoughtful philosophical questions.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Horton, the happy elephant from the creation of Dr. Seuss, finds adventure and wisdom when he encounters a whole village of little people on a speck atop a pink blossom floating in the air. Horton, the only 'large' person who hears them must overcome the doubt and ridicule of his friends as he seeks to protect his new found, very tiny, world by placing it in a safe place on a high mountain top. As the possibility of making it all the way to safety becomes harder and harder, Horton (voice by Jim Carey) becomes more and more determined and pushes himself to run across cold snow, climb dangerous roads, and depend on the love of his family who believe in him. This clever, engaging film is delightful in its' crisp animation. Much to the surprise of the townspeople who do not share in Horton's imagination and spirit, they too come to hear the 'Who' and realize that we all, however big or small, matter-an engaging lesson for both adults and children. This film, with humor and sensitivity, promotes the awareness of diversity and shows positive pride in following one's truth. A fun, forgiving, discovery with Horton, the elephant.

CURIOUS GEORGE: A VERY MONKEY CHRISTMAS
UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOME VIDEO
Series: SHORT, AGES 2-5, ANIM
Topic - Family
Description - George and The Man with the Yellow Hat are having a great time getting ready for Christmas. There's only one problem: neither of them can figure out what to give the other for a present. The man finds George's wish list indecipherable. And George doesn't have a clue about what to get for The Man who has everything. Can they resolve their dilemma in time?
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Fabulous music gets you singing along right from the beginning. Christmas can be a tricky time not only when you're a monkey, but also when you are a man with a yellow hat who loves a certain little monkey. We watch as the two of them try to figure out the best gifts that demonstrate how much they love each other. Along the way, we see how the perfect gift comes from the heart. "A Very Monkey Christmas" deals brilliantly with the excitement of the holidays and the difficulty in waiting for the special day. It shows how sometimes the things we plan don't always work out perfectly, yet it's what in the heart that matters most. In addition to its musical excellence, this DVD assists children (and parents) in working through problems or emotional issues. It's a title children will relate to and adults, also, providing a great family viewing experience.

Description - When a bus driver takes a break from his route, a very unlikely volunteer springs up to take his place -- a pigeon! But you've never met one like this before. Narrated by Mo Willems and Jon Scieszka with animation by Pete List. Includes bonus interview with Mo Willems.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The story is about a pigeon, but mimics a child having a tantrum over something they can't have. It tells a fun story, holding your attention. Could be a good spring board for discussion on behavior with a child. Encourages children to interact with the DVD, and tell the pigeon that he can't drive the bus. Some viewers might not appreciate the pigeon going off in a truck at the end. Overall a fun story.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Very good. I like how it has the people speaking, like actual people and not just the narrator. I like the pigeon's reactions to all their answers like he has a really mad face as if he was saying "Come on."

CRAZY HAIR DAY
WESTON WOODS STUDIOS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT AGES 5-8
Topic - Family
Description - Stanley arrives at school, all set to celebrate Crazy Hair Day, only to find out he has mixed up the date with School Picture Day. In this uplifting story of friendship and kindness, what starts out as a worst-ever experience takes a surprising turn as Stanley's best friend and his classmates concoct a creative show of solidarity. Narrated by Zach Braff, with music by Barney Saltzberg and Eric Eckstein. Directed by Virginia Wilkos. Includes a fun bonus interview with Barney Saltzberg.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovely short film that reaches you on a human level and demonstrates positive moral choices. The story flows beautifully, connecting you with the characters. It makes the viewer feel the excitement of unusual school days such as pajama day and then adds enough conflict (going to school on picture day thinking it's crazy hair day) to keep it exciting. Many kids will identify with being in an embarrassing situation or seeing someone else deal with an embarrassing situation. This title models compassion as the classmates rally around and make their own crazy head gear to make Stanley feel more comfortable. All the animals work together in the class and show respect for one another. There is a strong message of friendship, even on Stanley's behalf, as he realizes his class is a team and he's an essential part of it. It helps identify embarrassment and teaches kids how to cope with awkward situations. This is a great little film that shows the importance of each member of a group and demonstrates how to deal with uncomfortable situations.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. "I liked it because there were some silly parts such as when he comes into school with the wild and crazy hair." "On a 1-5 scale, I would give it a 4 that I would watch it again." "It's a very creative story that my friends would like too." "A guy thinks it's crazy hair day but it's actually picture day. His hair is all weird but it ends up happy." "We have Spirit week at our school where we do crazy things." "All the characters were animals." "I liked when the guy ran into the bathroom and everyone else wore stuff on their head to make them look crazy. They helped him feel more comfortable." "It was a lot like my school." "I want to know what other schools have crazy hair day. Mine does mismatch day and gender blender day." "It's not a perfect movie, but it's a pretty good one."

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This is a beautiful DVD that I would love to share with my child both for its appearance and its moral value. KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This title includes three stories for different times in the winter including Christmas and Valentine's Day. It is easy to watch in small sections or all at once. The first story talks about sharing even when you don't have a lot. The second shows how to be creative when making valentines and giving them to others. The third highlights a little boy who has the money to spend and ends up helping someone else. Good moral lessons representing different races and cultures. "This might help children to think about ways they can help others." "The stories are well told and well illustrated." "It presents holidays from various times in winter and from different parts of the world."
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Good movie. I like the animation on the Valentine one. I liked how it was kind of cartooned, but not totally cartooned. It was in-between. I like it where the guy says "I never get any Valentines then his friend gives him a Valentine." I like how in the Drummer Boy, with the singing, it shows what they are singing about. I like "The Lucky Money" because it's kind of like the "Joy" one because they show that you should give money to poor people. It's good to give.

KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The adventures with Wubbzy are always fun. I love how Widget always builds something even though something funny happens out of it and it ends out not working like the Snowplower 3000 when a bird pressed a button then the snowman fell. It showed that you can solve things by thinking hard and with some friends to help. It looked and sounded great. It was almost like a play even though it was animated. KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I loved it because it is so creative. I want to watch it again because it's funny, and I think my friends will love it. They treated each other nicely in the movie. When Wubbzy was in danger Walden and Widget helped him. It wasn't really safe when Wubbzy was driving a motorcycle without a helmet, though. I liked the music and I would have sung with it, but I did not really know the songs. The movie helped me understand what I was doing sometimes with my friends when I was doing what only I wanted to do and they did not want to hang around. KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very nice. Very relaxing, would make a great title to watch before nap time. I love the words for the songs being shown at the bottom of the screen - very nice for kids who are learning to read. The songs flow smoother and tell a tale of Gustafer when you watch hem all. Language is very appropriate for preschoolers. The characters are colorful and the music extremely pleasant. The package comes with an audio CD of just the music which is a nice addition. I love the images. They are beautifully made and imaginative.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids were very into the visuals and talked aloud about what they saw. At one point, the adult facilitators asked them to listen to the lyrics (a couple of kids were able to read the lyrics on the screen) but the kids were too busy asking questions aloud to each other or making comments such as: "He's sad." "Look, it's a ladybug." They liked Gustafer and his friends. They liked the stars, the music and the spaceship. They thought it was shaped like a tear because Gustafer was sad.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very engaging, well produced video which teaches what it sets out to do very well. A good variety of visual strategies are used, both with people in a studio and footage of the actual thing or activity we are learning to sign. Nicely paced and good length. It is simple. Takes things one at a time. Isn't too slow or too fast. Gives us a sign to learn, and reinforces it by showing the thing or activity. Great content. Keeps you engaged. Visuals are well shot and well edited. Different races, ages and genders are well represented. The time spent on each item is appropriate and gives audiences of all ages the opportunity to absorb the material. Uses a variety of strategies to get the lessons across. It ends a bit abruptly. Definitely leaves you wanting to learn more signs.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - A bit hit! "Yeah! It's really special. I like all the things they talked about with the signs, especially the doggie." "It's great. I like this movie." "My friends would like cuz it's great and I think they would want to learn about signs too." "I liked learning the signs." "I want to learn sign language. I liked the diaper change one. I liked the doggies having a bath." One two-year-old pointed excitedly to the twin brothers when they were hugging. Both two year olds moved closer to the TV once they started really watching it. The four and five-year-olds were doing the signs as they saw then. One five-year-old said, "That is true" when they said Grandpas teach you to fish. "Mama, I want a (signs bath)." Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Introduces families to 15 of the most common signs used with young children. Children will enjoy learning ASL signs through original rhymes, live child models and playful puppets. Signs like, I Love You, hurt and pacifier are featured.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very nice with catchy rhymes. Presentation is very professional. Content is geared at pre-verbal children. Engaging and entertaining for both children and adults. Appropriately paced, teaches life skills of signing as a way to communicate feelings. It may stimulate language development and improve manual dexterity and coordination. It is filled with excellent demonstrations of sign language by both kids and adults. Great rhythms, use of children's voices. Each sign is taught by first demonstrating it by an adult or child as a close up. After demonstration, there is a montage presenting situations where signing could be used, followed by a repeat of the original demonstration. Very suitable for babies 6 months of age up to first graders. The visuals and rhymes are arresting even without understanding what sign language is all about. In truth the video does not refer to the hearing impaired at all, the signs are simply presented as another form of body language. All races and ages of children and adults are represented, including a Downs Syndrome child. It does make one want to learn more about signing and its uses.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids paid attention to the rhyming and watched the people in the video making the signs. They were prompted to say the words they knew. Most of the children loved the video and called out various names of things they saw. They moved along to the music, clapping hands and swaying. They responded to their teacher as she reinforced the images and sounds onscreen. Most kids tried to sign along with the show. When the video shows the sign for "eat," the teacher called out "eat." in English and Spanish and replicated the actions onscreen. The children replicated as well. Pace is lively for a first time viewing. However, to master the signs one would have to watch each segment repeatedly and practice. The entire video can be viewed in one showing. However, in order to master each sign, the segments can be viewed separately. In addition, the alphabet can be viewed on its own. Excellent.

DWIZZLE DEE - COLORS, SIZES, SONGS & IMAGINATION!
CINEMA WERX LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Mrs. Ashley is ready to teach fundamentals like colors, sizes and more! Your child will go along with Lenny, Penny & Gifford on fun and stimulating adventures!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Fun to watch. The place is appropriate for younger ones; slow enough that they can easily catch on and participate. It shows the viewer what it is like to be inside a classroom then goes into a classroom lesson. The lesson about colors and flowers has good stick ability including the game to find and match the colors to the flowers. The teacher's interactions with her students is exemplary. There is a point when the teacher shows the children how to be respectful of one another after one of the students tells the other that he is doing something wrong. Production quality is good, with fun songs included. The design of the sets has bright colors that are suitable for its audience.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. "It is pretty fun. I like the flowers." "They treated each other nicely because they are happy." "I think my friends would like it like I do." " I think I want to learn about sunflowers." 2-year-olds pointed to the screen and wanted to eat the apple onscreen. They shouted out words along with the show and moved along to the songs. "I liked the blue flower the best."

BILLY BLUE HAIR: WHY ARE FIRE TRUCKS RED?

BILLY BLUE HAIR: WHY ARE FIRE TRUCKS RED?
KAYO MEDIA
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Billy Blue Hair has lost his dog Doogie. As animated Billy searches for Doogie within the live action video, he becomes your guide and educator as you learn fun and quirky facts about fire fighters, fire engines and how to battle a fire.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - For children interested in learning more about fire trucks and firefighters, this is perfect. You learn all kinds of facts about fire truck and how firemen respond to emergency situations. It is probably too detailed to appeal to the average preschooler, unless they are very interested in the topic. The content is extremely accurate. It is about people who put their lives on the line to help others in need showing men and women from various backgrounds working as firefighters. It uses an animated character which is appropriate for this age range and never talks down to kids. It explains the way firefighters work using verbiage that young children can easily understand, even expanding their vocabulary a bit as it explains aobut ladder trucks and aerial ladders. Very clear images and narration.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids liked this. "I liked it because there are two drivers and the one in the back is COOL!" "I liked it because it shows lots of fire engines, cars and fire stations." The most animated watcher was the youngest - a two-year-old who pointed and made excited noises. It is a bit long and works best when viewed in segments. Since its all facts, not many kids could watch it all the way through in one sitting. One seven-year-old said, "I've been to the fire station about 100 times. This is all stuff I already know." An eight-year-old said, " I saw a couple of things I didn't know before."

BABY PRODIGY - 30 MINUTES TO A QUIET BABY

BABY PRODIGY - 30 MINUTES TO A QUIET BABY
BABY PRODIGY COMPANY
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Family
Description - Soothe and relax your baby with delightful animations, adorable puppet scenes and calming visuals. A must have for anyone trying to quiet a fussy child. Starring celebrity characters Dookie and Dottie Duck!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Nice video for adults to watch together with their child, ages 1-3. The merits are really only realized when there is adult interaction with the content. The interactive portions are outstanding. The structure, continuity and style are very good. Some portions are perhaps a bit fast for the youngest kids, but still very good. Overall it is well paced, suitable for the audience and holds their interest. The attitude is respectful of toddlers and introduces concepts such as color recognition and matching. Production quality is good. The sections about color, food and animals could easily lead to other discussion and activities if the parent is actually watching with the child.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children in our jury were 20 months to 3 1/2 years in age. They definitely enjoyed the show and, in fact, groaned when it ended. One responded with an enthusiastic "ya" when asked if he wanted to watch it again. They seemed to like the stuffed animals and the music. Overall, they liked the "real objects" better than the drawings. They pointed to objects, participated in color matching activities, danced along to the songs and one speech delayed 3 year old said "train" (a new word for him) while watching. There are portions that encourage interactions - naming colors, matching colors, etc where you need an adult interacting with the child to get the full benefit. The color matching part is a bit fast for the children. They would have had more success if they had more time to figure it out on their own. There are non-interactive portions that are a bit slow and the kids started to lose interest but as soon as the section and pace changed, the kids re-engaged. It's not easily divided into segments in the menu but an adult could pause and skip to view certain segments.

KNUFFLE BUNNY TOO: A CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY
WESTON WOODS STUDIOS/SCHOLASTIC
Series: SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Family
Description - Trixie can't wait to bring Knuffle Bunny to school, but she finds out that someone else has the exact same bunny! A 24-hour journey ensues, in which she loses Knuffle bunny and gains him back along with something new - her first best friend.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very funny. Terrific visuals - colorful, animated characters against black and white still photographs. Suspenseful. The video would be fun to watch with a child as the video deals with the feelings of jealousy, frustration, anger and ultimately - friendship. The video uses a noir-type style where it is almost like a 1940s mystery with voice over narration and middle the night meetings and exchanges. Also uses jazzy, sultry saxophone background music. It acknowledges the very human emotions of jealousy, competition, frustration, anger and friendship. Some parents might think the character of the father is overly indulgent; i.e.. Trixie wakes up her father in the middle of the night and he goes out to exchange knuffle bunnies. Trixie is funny, smart and sassy. She is Anglo and her best friend, Sonja, is of color. It is respectful for a full range of children's emotions. Wonderful production qualities, beautiful animation, creative visuals, great background music. Excellent casting of actor for Trixie's voice. A lot of story is told in 11 minutes. Trixie plays a strong female character who eventually bonds with a rival - promoting friendship even in the presence of conflict.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children enjoyed this because, in their own words, "they got their own bunnies back." They would definitely watch it again. They liked Trixie and how it depicted the value of friendship. Also, the father/daughter relationship was inspiring. It allows children to see how other children work through emotional issues such as separation from a beloved toy. Many children were interested in reading the Knuffle Bunny books when they learned that the movie was based on a book.

Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Family
Description - Abbygail and her friends enjoy a day of camping, swimming, collecting seashells and a they are taught a new song as they finally learn the meaning of the magical key. They find clues about their friend, the missing Pirate Dog. He's been Shipwrecked!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - What you need to know is that this entire story is "acted" out by dogs. You can't help but be amazed how they have gotten the dogs to lie quietly, side by side, in little doggie-sized tents. It is really quite charming. A narrator tells the entire story as the dogs illustrates. Abbygail is the true star of the story but her co-stars are equally charming. If you love dogs, you will definitely be charmed. Even if you don't, you'll be drawn in.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. "Yes, I like seeing the little doggies. I especially liked Rosebud." "I like the place where they had their tents." "My friends would really like it because they like doggies." "I liked the pirate story." All the kids watched the entire show and couldn't wait to watch it again.

Topic - Family
Description - Abbygail and her friends are going on an overnight camping adventure down by the river. Rosebud returns to babysit. They discover a beautiful waterfall valley on the way to the campsite. That night Abbygail dreams of a fun adventure at the Ocean!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Adult viewers, particularly those who are dog lovers, absolutely loved this. They found the dogs adorable and enjoyed watching their antics. The narrator's voice is soothing, rather like a mom reading a bedtime story, but it also almost puts you to sleep. The songs are delightful and leave you wanting more, or even have a different voice for each of the dogs. The storyline could use some improvement though the messages about teamwork and getting along come through clearly. Overall, it is cute and likeable, particularly the puppies.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Most kids enjoyed this, particularly younger ones in the 5 and 6-year-old age group. The older kids found the story lacking in substance whereas the younger ones said, "I would watch it again because there are funny parts." All the 5-year-olds watched it twice and agreed they would watch it again. They loved the puppies who were "cute and funny." "I think my friend Maddie would like the pink puppy, like me." They understood the storyline. ""It was about funny stuff that dogs do and pretend to do - like going camping." Overall, the littlest ones liked it best.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - What an array of adorable dogs! Each cuter than the next… but they portray a range of characters. It will be obvious to the adults watching this that the "storyline" is made up after the dogs have been taped. But, it doesn't matter. It is absolutely charming. There are many things that appeal to the children - the animals, the outdoor scenes, the dream sequence, where children can think about what they , in turn, might imagine. The dogs are kind and helpful to one another.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. All the kids watched with interest. The youngest one gasped and pointed to the animals saying, "doggie, horsie, etc. One 5-year-old said, "I liked it because the puppies make new friends." Another said, "It was sad when the Daddy Doggie left his baby but I liked it. " A few kids watched it a second time and still said they would watch it again.
