NIM'S ISLAND (HDNET)
HDNET MOVIES LLC
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 5-12, ANIMATION
Topic - Family
Description - When a girl's father goes missing on a magical island ruled by imagination, she must recruit the help of her favorite author to find him and conquer Nim's Island.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) and her adventures in the tropics as a precocious yet self-sufficient 11-year-old, will have every kid wanting a zip line installed in the backyard. Nim and her Dad (Gerard Butler), a famous scientist live an idyllic life on a secluded island somewhere in the South Pacific that they refer to as "our own perfect secret world." Clearly, that's the way they want to keep it. Nim's best friends are a lizard and a sea lion named Selkie. She pours over books about her favorite literary hero/adventurer - Alex Rover.
The scene shifts when Nim utters the words, "when my Dad gets back" as he takes off for a four day trip on his sailboat in search of protozoan. A terrific storm blows in unexpectedly and when her father doesn't return, Nim's life goes topsy turvy as she ponders her fate and that of her missing Dad. She reaches out to her hero for help, unaware that the author of her favorite adventures books is Alexandra Rover (Jodi Foster). While her fans think she's the swashbuckling hero of her adventure novels, the truth is Alexandra is a wuss with a crippling fear of leaving her own house - if even to go to the mailbox. All that changes with an email exchange with Nim and her fictional character, Alex Rover eggs her on and go to Nim's rescue. She somehow rises to the challenge but not easily.
What I enjoyed about this film is how the action/adventure/fantasy/Indiana Jones theme has a girl hero. One of the current favorite TV shows for our KIDS FIRST! jurors is Flight 29 Down. I believe the same audience will love this.
Directed by Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett who also brought us "Little Manhattan," it brings out the best of young actress, Abigail Breslin. Miss Breslin's portrayal of Nim is charming, captivating and fun. Jodi Foster's performance captures her comedic qualities but doesn't have the same stickiness as her co-star. Gerard Butler's (P.S. I Love You) performance as both Dad and Alex Rover demands little of the actor beyond his eminent good looks.
This is a great film for tweens who will resonate with an adventure of their peers. There are two issues that make me not give this the highest scores for KIDS FIRST! First, are the scenes of Dad and Alexandria in the ocean without life vests. In real life, neither of these characters would have survived their ordeals in the turbulent seas without life vests and it's inappropriate to even suggest that they would not be wearing them at the first hint of bad weather. The other objection is inappropriate treatment of animals. When Nim is protecting her island from an onslaught of dim-witted tourists, she catapults reptiles onto the beach. Ug. I can hear the animal activist scream in the back of my head. It's not a big enough deal to diss the movie but enough to mention.
My summary: A perfect action fantasy for tweens, where young Abigail Breslin captures your heart along with your imagination.

PENNIE SEMPELL & CO
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 5-8, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - In a music-rich, animated environment, children learn strategies for handling feelings, responsibility and social well-being. Lively Q&A and hit songs engage children in a world of wellness and language arts learning in a fun radio show format.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Deals with emotions and feelings on a young child's level. Children will enjoy the songs and the fun Q&A forum. With young children it would be good to show the lessons individually, and use it as a teaching tool. I like that the lyrics showed up so older kids could sing along. Visually it's a bit lacking. Loved the menu access! You can play each lesson and/or song individually. Can be used to motivate children to understand body language, cooperation, conflict resolution and to be more caring. The songs are fun and entertaining, but the best part is that it shows positive ways for young children to learn to express their feelings
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Younger children were glued to the screen. Some of the older kids did think the songs were cool, though they were too old for the content. Found it strange that there were just photos of people so they didn't move their mouths when they spoke. Kids discussed ways that they could help their community. Young kids sang along and seemed to really be taking in the information. The section on body language was the favorite for most. "I learned a lot about feelings."

WE BOUGHT A ZOO

WE BOUGHT A ZOO       Click Title to View High Bandwidth Online Video Trailer This title has online video!
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX FILM CORPORATION
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 5-12
Topic - Family
Description - Set in Southern California, a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I really like this movie; it was kind of funny, a little sad, but really cool. This movie is all about Benjamin Mee, played by Matt Damon, who is living with his family in the city trying to deal with the death of his wife and raise his two kids. His son Dylan is not doing so well and keeps getting into trouble. He finally gets expelled and so they have to find him a new school. Benjamin decides that it's time for them to move and start a new life and they find a really cool house out of the city and want to buy it. But they soon realize that this house comes with a zoo. His daughter Rosie loves the house though so they decide to give it a try. Some of the main characters in the movie are Benjamin Mee, Kelly Foster, Duncan, Dylan, and Rosie. My favorite character is Benjamin because he is a really funny character. When he gets mad he does some really funny stuff like throwing a tantrum all by himself, which kept me laughing. He is also a really good dad even though he doesn't exactly know what he's doing. My favorite part in the movie is when Benjamin Mee is inside the porcupine pit and he thinks they are nice at first but then the porcupine started running after him and he jumped over the fence and landed on pointy stuff. So when they tried to take them off he kept screaming! That was really funny. I would recommend this movie for ages 10 and up because there are some scary parts in this movie that younger kids might not like. The movie is sad because the mom dies and the family is still trying to deal with that. The pictures that Dylan draws are kind of violent and scary and there is also some kissing in the movie Reviewed by Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

ADVENTURES OF TINTIN

KIDS FIRST ENDORSED
ADVENTURES OF TINTIN       Click Title to View High Bandwidth Online Video Trailer This title has online video!
PARAMOUNT PICTURES
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 5-12 ANIMATED
Topic - Family
Description - Having bought a model ship, the Unicorn, for a pound off a market stall Tintin is initially puzzled that the sinister Mr. Sakharine should be so eager to buy it from him, resorting to murder and kidnapping Tintin - accompanied by his marvellous dog Snowy - to join him and his gang as they sail to Morocco on an old cargo ship. Sakharine has bribed the crew to revolt against the ship's master, drunken Captain Haddock, but Tintin, Snowy and Haddock escape, arriving in Morocco at the court of a sheikh, who also has a model of the Unicorn. Haddock tells Tintin that over three hundred years earlier his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock was forced to scuttle the original Unicorn when attacked by a piratical forebear of Sakharine but he managed to save his treasure and provide clues to its location in three separate scrolls, all of which were secreted in models of the Unicorn.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This movie is really cool. This movie was one of the best adventure movies that I have ever seen. It kept me on the edge of my seat! This movie is all about Tintin who sees a model of a boat called the Unicorn, which has a secret passage to find a riddle. There are three models and if he finds all three and holds them up to the sun he would see a clue to find out where the real Unicorn sunk so that he can find all the treasure. Tintin goes on this adventure with his dog Snowy and meets Captain Haddock who helps him along the way. Some of the main characters in the movie are Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, and Inspector Thompson. My favorite character is Captain Haddock because he is a really funny character. Sometimes when he drinks he breaks down doors and he doesn't really know what water is because he is always drinking alcohol. I also like Tintin because he loves adventure and is always solving mysteries. My favorite part in the movie is when Tintin, Snowy, and Captain Haddock where on an airplane and were running out of fuel. They were going to poor alcohol into the fuel tank so Captain Haddock got on top of the airplane but he accidentally left the alcohol inside of the plane. Since he always drinks alcohol he burped inside of the fuel tank and that made the engine start going really fast! That was really funny! I would recommend this movie for all ages 6 and up because kids any younger would probably think this movie is kind of scary. The movie also references alcohol and has some violence. They had sword fighting, big machines that shot guns, and bottles being thrown at people. The scenes were really cool action scenes but not appropriate for everyone. Go out and see this movie in theaters on December 21st. Review by Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX FILM CORPORATION
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 5-12, ANIMATED
Topic - Family
Description - Playing around while aboard a cruise ship, the Chipmunks and Chipettes accidentally go overboard and end up marooned in a tropical paradise. They discover their new turf is not as deserted as it seems.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Awesome movie, because there is a lot of action and everything the chipmunks and Chipettes do is so funny. This movie is all about Dave, the chipmunks, and the Chipettes who go on vacation and have a really big adventure. They go on a cruise ship and Alvin keeps causing lots of trouble on the ship (like always). Alvin comes up with a really great idea to fly on top of a kite. All of the chipmunks and Chipettes are holding the kite while Alvin is flying but the wind picks up too hard. They start to fly away and Simon tries to help by tying the kite to Dave's chair (while he is sleeping). This still doesn't work and the chair and the chipmunks start to move down the deck of the ship. Eventually, the kite slips off the chair and the chair flips over. Dave wakes up to see the chipmunks and the Chipettes fly away on the kite. Some of the main characters in the movie are Dave, the chipmunks (Alvin, Simon, and Theodore), the Chipettes (Eleanor, Jeanette, and Brittany), Zoe, and Ian. My favorite character is Alvin because he is always having fun and causing lots of trouble. I also like him because in the end he learns that he can still have fun while being responsible. My favorite part is when the chipmunks and Chipettes meet Zoe on the stranded island. She invites them to meet her friends and when they get there they see that her friends are a bunch of sports balls. It's really funny because it seems like she is a little crazy since she has been on the island for so long. We figure out later that there are spiders on the island that change a person's personality and make them act differently. Later on Simon gets bit by one of the spiders and then he starts acting like someone else. It is really funny. I would recommend this movie for all ages because it is super funny and there was no violence or parts that would scare anyone. It also shows how much family means and that most families would do anything for each other. Go out and see this movie in theaters on December 16th.

Topic - Music
Description - Thirteen animated music videos that take your little ones on more whimsical adventures in this highly anticipated sequel. Featuring a blend of popular traditional children's songs that have that GiggleBelly twist, and fun original GiggleBellie tunes.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Vivid colors, music and dancing, make this appealing. Characters are bright and bouncy and songs have a good beat that make you want to dance. A new spin on some familiar songs makes kids take the time to listen to the lyrics. A great tool for breaking the ice on a play date. Your child will jump off the couch and start dancing and laughing, and you might just join in.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - "I like the animals and colors." Kids want to watch it over again. They like to sing along and they all danced. "It was awesome." "My friends will like it because it is nice." It is hard to even get the kids to talk about the DVD, they just want to keep on singing.

CHIP TAYLOR & THE GRANDKIDS: GOLDEN KIDS RULES
SMITHSONIAN FOLKWAYS RECORDINGS
Series: AUDIO CD FOR AGES 5-8
Topic - Music
Description - When renowned musician and songwriter, Chip Taylor, became a grandfather, he directed his creative energy to writing new songs with and for his grandkids. Melds the husky, time-worn vocals and musical instincts of a seasoned performer with the charming artistry of his three young grandchildren. With introduction by Chip's brother, actor Jon Voight, and includes a 36-page booklet of lyrics.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - I remember Chip Taylor's previous songs, so I found this interesting and fun! I would enjoy listening to this with a young child. I am impressed, fun and lively, and I really like the love of family message throughout. Stresses following rules while still having fun in one song, taking care of our planet in another. All very positive messages. Songs teach respect, trust, honesty and caring for Earth. Chip Taylor is a very talented songwriter and musician. I remember songs such as "Wild Thing" and didn't know what to expect. This was a fun, lively CD, with catchy melodies and lyrics. I like that the songs focus on values and family and other things that children should learn about. What a pleasure!
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - "It was fun! Makes me want to dance!" Children danced to many of the songs. All of the children said they would listen to the CD again. They particularly liked the song about saving the planet, and one girl said the "Magical Horse was the best song!" Kids ages 3-8 in one group all said they liked it and their friends would too. "Teaches things kids should do like brush their teeth and do their homework." Two older kids even discussed what they could do to save the planet. All of the kids either sing or dance along. This was a hit with everyone.

Description - In defense of WWII Britain, three children and an apprentice witch search for the missing component of a magic spell.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Bedknobs and Broomsticks is a classic 1971 film about 3 children who are sent from London to the country side during the war. They end up in the care of the adoring Ms. Price, who just happens to be a level one apprentice witch in training. Together Ms. Price and the children travel to magical lands with the help of a flying bed and an enchanted bedknob. I thought this movie was fantastic. I remember watching this film at a younger age and it provided great entertainment for our latest family movie night. I think it's really cool how they mixed live action with cartoons in some of the scenes on the magical island to create a fun whimsical effect. My favorite character is Ms. Price played by the lovely Angela Lansbury because she is a very strong leading lady and a wonderful addition to the children's lives. My favorite scene is when they visit the ocean floor beneath the magical island because that is the scene that I remember most when I look back at my memories of this film. I also really enjoyed the scene when everyone sings Portabella Road because all the dancing becomes quite comical. I give Bedknobs and Broomsticks 4 out of 5 stars because it is a great film for family movie night. Raven Devanney, age 14, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.

Description - When a young fairy accidentally shrinks a distracted construction worker down to her size, the worker helps save the fairy's forest from the demolition that lies ahead.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Heightens concern about environmental issues. Music and animation are delightful. Promotes compassion for living things. Forest creatures are respectful of one another. Lumberjacks are stereotyped as careless.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Fern Gully is an animated family film that was one of my favorites growing up. I think that this movie is still very enjoyable for me even now that I'm older. It tells the story of the last rain forest called Fern Gully that is inhabited by fairies. An evil creature called Hexes begins to destroy the forest and the fairies must team up with all of the beings in the forest to defeat Hexes and keep their home safe. I think Fern Gully has some very good messages about protecting the environment. When I was younger, around 5 or 6, I remember being frightened by some of the more intense situations in this film involving the deforestation. My favorite character is definitely Batty, voiced by the comic genius Robin Williams. Batty is a crazy bat that has a wild variety of personalities and Robin Williams does a phenomenal job portraying this character. My favorite scene is when you meet Batty for the first time because you get a taste of his hilarious qualities. I give Fern Gully 4 out of 5 stars because it is a wonderful family film no matter what the age groups might be. Raven Devanney, age 14, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic.

Starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Eric Jacobson, Dave Doelz, Bill Barretta and Steve Whitmire
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I love this movie a lot because it is really funny and kind of weird. There is a lot of singing and catchy music in the movie that I really enjoy. This movie is all about a guy named Gary and his brother Walter (who is a Muppet even though he doesn't live with the Muppets). They go on a huge adventure with Mary (Gary's girlfriend) to see the Muppets and see why they aren't doing their show anymore. When they are there they learn that there is a greedy oil tycoon who wants to tear down the Muppet Theater. Some of the main characters in the movie are Gary, Mary, Walter and the whole Muppet gang. My favorite character is Walter because he has an amazing talent that he doesn't know about until he learns that he can be a Muppet if he wants to and if he tries hard enough. He is a great character because he believes in the Muppets and never gives up on them. My favorite part in the movie is when the whole gang gets back together and makes another show. It is a really funny show and they do it so they can save their studio. I recommend this movie for all ages, even preschoolers, because there are no scary parts. There is a lot of music that everyone will enjoy. I also recommend that you stay for the end credits because there are a lot of outtakes shown that are really funny. Go out and see this in theaters. Description - When all parents on Earth are kidnapped by aliens, it is up to Jimmy and his friends to save the day and bring the grownups home.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Hilarious kid-oriented sci-fi spoof. Splashy, snappy and fun. Ingenious animation and clever humor. Action-packed beginning, cute follow-up at the end. Kids reveling in a day of parental absence tend to be sophomoric, but learn a good lesson.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Are you a fan of the TV series Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius? If you are, then you'll definitely enjoy the movie. As Jimmy Neutron sees a shooting star fall down, he and his friends wish for their parents to disappear, and their wish comes true! Aliens abduct all of the parents in Jimmy's town, so all of the kids go out of control because they can do whatever they want now. But after a day of going crazy, all of the kids end up missing their parents. Will Jimmy find a way to rescue everyone's parents? Although I am not exactly the target audience for the movie, I still found some of the silly jokes funny. The movie is also action-packed, and the plot is easy to comprehend with messages relevant to kids like it's difficult to be independent without your parents' guidance, but more generally, be careful for what you wish for. The animation is very lively, with vivid and bright colors to accentuate the mood of the movie. I recommend this movie to kids 5 and up, but more to tweens because of its sense of humor. But even so, it is an amusing family film that all ages can enjoy. Watch Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius all month on HDNet movies at kidScene! Credit: Gabriella Chu, age 14, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic. This movie was pretty good. It had a lot of the characters from the show on TV but I wish they would have included more of the characters from the TV show. The movie is about Jimmy Neutron who wishes on a falling star that all parents would disappear. Some aliens take all of the parents from Earth. Jimmy Neutron and his friends have to save all the parents from being eaten by a giant chicken. My favorite character in the movie is Jimmy Neutron because he gets everyone out of trouble throughout the movie. He rescues all of his friends from jail and he rescues the parents from the aliens. He is really smart. Some other characters in the movie are Cindy, Carl, Sheen, and Nick. They are Jimmy's friends and help him rescue all the parents. I would recommend this movie for ages 3 and up. There are a few scary parts that younger kids might not like. The movie is more interesting and really funny. It's a great movie to watch as a family. SONY PICTURES
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 5-12
Topic - Family
Description - Arthur Christmas reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child's question: 'So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?' The answer: Santa's exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the center of the film is a story about a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I love this movie a lot because it is really cool and funny. This movie is all about Arthur who starts off in the mail room answering emails and letters to Santa. He is Santa's youngest son and believes in Santa so much that he wants to be him. He believes that the old tradition of Santa should live on and that they don't need to use such high-tech stuff to get the job done. Some of the main characters in the movie are Arthur, Steve, Grandsanta and Santa. My favorite character in the movie is Arthur. Arthur is my favorite character because he is really funny and he helps out with Christmas. When a present doesn't get delivered he will do anything to try and get that present to the child who wanted it. He goes on the old sleigh to take the present to the child. My favorite part in the movie is when Santa puts his head on a toy in one of the houses where he was delivering presents. Everyone said don't touch that toy but he accidentally did. Then it starts to play music and they all have to hide so no one will see them. It is pretty funny. I recommend this movie for ages 4 and up because there is one part in the movie where a man pulls out a gun to try and get Arthur and the sleigh to go away. That could be a little scary to younger kids. Credit: Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic This movie is about Santa Claus's crazy family and Santa's youngest son Arthur. Arthur has an older brother named Steve, played by Hugh Laurie, who you might know as the TV doctor, House. In the story, it's Christmas Eve and the Claus family is all working together to deliver the presents to millions and millions of kids all over the world. Steve has computerized Santa's Christmas process so that it is way easier. During the process, one little girl in England accidentally gets missed. Oh no! She's not going to get her bicycle from Santa that Arthur promised her. Steve decides that it's just too late and there is no way to fix the problem. Santa agrees and goes to bed. But Arthur believes he can get it to her before morning and that he must! That's the mission of the story. A great adventure with Grand Santa, a wrapping elf and Arthur to get the present to Gwen. My favorite character in the story is the wrapping elf. She can wrap anything with just three pieces of sticky tape. She's got a positive attitude and won't give up, just like Arthur. This is a fun Christmas movie for the whole family. My parents really laughed and my teenage sister loves it too. I think there's lots of funny stuff for little kids and it's not scary. And no one will get bored with the story because there's so much action and it's a brand new Christmas story. I give Arthur Christmas five out of five stars. Makai Weber Colvin, age 10, KIDS FIRST! Description - Long ago, Kala (the sun) raced across the sky as he pleased, leaving the land and it's people with short days and long, dark nights. Among those suffering from the lack of daylight was the goddess Hina, mother of Maui the demigod. In order to make things pono (right), Maui summons all his courage and travels to the highest summit of Haleakala, where he confronts the Mighty Kala.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Well-animated folk tale from Hawaii. A young boy helps his mother with chores and then joins his friends to hear grandma's story. Grandma tells a wonderful fable about a boy who had to tame the sun so it would give them more sunlight and his mother and the other people could get their work done. The animation is nicely executed with bright colors and an imaginative story.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This rousing animated musical features memorable songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, won two Academy Awards and features a memorable cast including Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, and Jeremy Irons. Wonderfully animated, it tells an original story, slightly reminiscent of Shakespeare's Hamlet, about the circle of life of a lion, from birth to manhood and delivers valuable life lessons about things like honor and responsibility. It appeals to adults as well as children though it does have some scary scenes, including the death of a parent and bloody battles that make it unsuitable for your youngest.

Description - Mumble's son, Erik, is struggling to realize his talents in the Emperor Penguin world. Meanwhile, Mumble and his family and friends discover a new threat their home -- one that will take everyone working together to save them.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This movie is about Mumble (Elijah Wood) and Gloria's (Pink) baby penguin named Erik (Ava Acres) who wanders off from all the other penguins. His father, Mumble tries to find him and while he is gone a big iceberg blocks the penguins from going anywhere. My favorite characters are Mumble, Erik and two krill named Will and Bill (Brad Pitt & Matt Damon). I like Mumble because he is really funny and he sometimes gets mad at Erik. I like Erik because he tries to get his father to take more chances and he is almost always happy. I like the two krill because they show how friendships take work. They split up in the movie, get lost and then find each other again and make a stronger friendship. My favorite part of this movie is when Will and Bill start tapping on the ice from underneath -kind of like how Mumble taps on the ice from above. Then, a whole bunch of other krill join in and they light up the ice with all of their tapping. I think this is really cool because it is neat to see all the lights and how they actually do that. The animation and special effects in this movie are really cool. When the krill light up the sea, that is really cool. When some of the ice goes tumbling down the effects of that are really neat. The animation in this movie is awesome. The penguins look very real and they do a good job at making them talk. I recommend this movie for ages two and up. This movie does have a few scary parts that might be frightening for kids younger than two. For example, when one of the elephant seals falls into a big hole his kids get really scared because they think he might get stuck down there forever. That part made me a little nervous. This is a great family movie that shows happiness and friendship. Go out and see this movie when it comes out in theaters on November 18th. Credit: Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

Description - View the everyday activities of two families in Germany - one urban and one rural. Eight-year-old Sophia lives with her parents, sister and brother in Reimershusen, a tiny town near Frankfurt. Ten-year-old Ole lives in Berlin with his parents and two brothers.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Getting a glimpse into the life of an average German child was a wonderful treat. Shows the life of two German families and how a typical day is fro them through the eyes of children. It is fun to see how life is both similar and different in Germany from our own. The children in this film are good role models. Sophia is seven years old and does chores at the nearby farm. She also works hard practicing to play guitar and supports her older sister by attending her choir performance. Ole is ten years old and is a hard worker. He helps to set the dinner table, washes dishes after dinner and does chores around the house. The background noise at the farm is a real treat and makes you feel as if you are really there. The locations are beautiful, they show the castles, the city where the Grimm brothers lived and the city of Berlin. Bound to broaden any viewers global perspective and understanding, full of real life current day cultural experiences and information about Germany's rich history. A great way to expose children to the culture of German families and show that they are not so different from those in the U.S.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - "I love to learn about Germany and follow the kids throughout a day in their lives." "I like the castles." "Very interesting. I got a lot of information." "It is cool. I really like the handball part, because they don't play it here in America. I would like to play it." "I like that they tell about daily lives and not just special things." "I like that you can hear them speak in German, but the narration was in English." "This movie makes me think about what it would be like to live in Germany."

Description - A story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends. Starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bog Thornton, Guillermo del Toro.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - If you've enjoyed the movie Shrek, you will definitely like Puss in Boots. I'm glad I saw this movie. It is about an outlaw cat that has been searching for the magic beans all his life with his partner and "brother" Humpty Dumpy. However, tension forms between Puss and Humpty Dumpy over jealousy, so they plan revenge against another. Who will find the magic beans? Discover the legend of Puss in Boots! The voiceovers of the characters in the movie are excellent. Antonio Banderas' accent matches Puss' sly and adventurous character perfectly. Salma Hayek's voice fits the tough and flirty character of Kitty Softpaws. Aside from the voiceover, I was even more impressed with the adventure in the movie. It seemed magical and thrilling. Scene after scene, Puss is on an exciting escapade. The animation of the movie adds to the excitement because it details even on subtleties, making the characters seem more realistic. The facial expressions and close ups on the characters are adorable. I love the close ups of baby Puss and huge-eyed Puss because they are undeniably cute. I recommend this movie to kids 10 and up. Anyone can enjoy the enthusiasm and exhilaration in the movie, but younger kids will probably have a hard time following the intricate plot. There are some twists and turns as Puss' allies and enemies keep changing. Puss in Boots is an adventurous family film that will keep the entire family entertained. Description - A neglected young boy with a love of video games, finds himself in the world of espionage when a government agent recruits him for a super secret mission.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Cloak and Dagger is the story of a young boy who finds a video game that contains secret government files. He must protect the files from falling into the wrong hands and has an adventure of a life time. I think this movie is pretty good. The cinematography is great considering the year this film came out, 1984. The acting is very well executed and truly enjoyable. My favorite scenes are all of the parts that Davey's imaginary friend, secret agent Jack Black, is in. I think its great how agent Black and Davey interact and the way agent Black helps with Davey's confidence in rough situations. I think this film is for ages 5-11 because older kids and teens might not enjoy the story line. I give Cloak and Dagger 3 out of 5 stars because I think I am too old for this film, but my 7 year old brother loved the action and plot. Description - The story of a young boy in Mississippi and his special relationship with his dog, Skip. Based on the best-selling autobiography by Willie Morris.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Full of coming-of-age themes with plenty for kids to talk about: love, loss, creativity, and growing up. Good representation of the forties. Brings up civil rights issues. Touched on several issues: What is a hero? What is cowardice? Is it shameful to be afraid to kill someone in a war? The telling from a child's perspective made the film feel more "authentic." Deals with difficult issues such as segregation, war, cowardice, bullying and fear. It does not shrink from difficult topics, but handles them with a delicate hand that a child can understand and appreciate. A lovely nostalgia piece designed to ring tears from anyone who has every owned a dog. The relationship between Willie and his Jack Russell Terrier, Skip, is touching, funny, real and entertaining. A family film that evokes historical context and teaches strong values of family, friendship and pet ownership. The humor and antics of Skip help children to relate to this story of another time and see that there are similarities in today's world.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Do you like dogs? My Dog Skip is an adaptation of the book My Dog Skip by Willie Morris. It is about a shy boy named Willie, who is bullied by a few boys in his neighborhood. However, on his 9th birthday, his mother gives him a dog, Skip, who helps him face the challenges of adolescence. Although he and his dog go on many adventures together, his dog runs away from him one day after a fight. Will they reunite with each other? I enjoyed watching Willie and his dog have fun and grow older together. The movie depicts the true meaning of friendship and emphasizes the adage that "a dog is a man's best friend." I recommend this movie to children 7 and up. Anyone can enjoy the movie because the storyline is easy to follow, but there are a few disturbing and sad scenes that may scare younger children. Description - Mowgli is the boy that was raised by wolves. Now, years later, he finds himself back in "civilization" where life, to him, is far less civilized than his learned jungle ways.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Interested in seeing an action packed movie? If so, watch The Jungle Book – live version. I really enjoyed it. This movie has so much action and suspense and follows the same storyline as the cartoon version but with so much more detail. The movie is about a boy named Mowgli who is taken away from his village after a tiger attack. He gets stuck on a runaway wagon that is on fire. After he manages to get off of the wagon he is too far away from his village and no one can find him. Mowgli is raised by a pack of wolves and grows up with a panther and a bear named Baloo. Eventually, he is found by civilization and his childhood love named Kitty. He then has to learn how to fit in with everyone. My favorite character in the movie is Mowgli because he tries really hard to fit in with everyone once he is found. He also tries really hard to always protect Kitty. He is a really good fighter and climber. My favorite part in this movie is when Mowgli finds a secret hideout where a lot of monkeys live. It is packed with mountains of treasures. He finds a dagger but then a snake pops out and tries to kill Mowgli. So Mowgli fights with the snake and eventually uses the dagger to kill the snake. It is really suspenseful. I recommend this movie for ages 6 and up. Younger kids might get scared watching this movie because there is a lot of fighting and suspense. Description - Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson are at a crossroads -- one is experiencing a mid-life crisis, another a late-life crisis, and the third, a far from ordinary no-life crisis. From David Frankel, the director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, comes a sophisticated comedy about three friendly rivals who, tired of being ruled by obligations and responsibilities, dedicate a year of their lives to following their dreams. Their big year takes them on a cross-country journey of wild and life-changing adventures.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This is a great movie because it has a lot of interesting facts about a lot of different birds. It is a really funny movie. The movie is about three men who are trying to win a contest called The Big Year. They have to find the most different kinds of birds in one year. Bostick (Owen Wilson) is one of the characters in the movie and he won the contest last year. He really wants to win again and beat his own record. Harris (Jack Black) and Preissler (Steve Martin) really wants to beat Bostick so they team up to help each other so one of them can win. The main characters in the movie are Bostick, Harris, and Preissler. My favorite character in the movie is Harris. I like Harris because he tries really hard to beat Bostick and he won't give up. He is also a really funny character and makes me laugh a lot. For example, when a girl that he likes ends up breaking up with her boyfriend, he does a victory dance on his front porch. Then he says that he feels really bad for her (even though he didn't). It is pretty funny. I recommend this movie for ages 6 and up because it has some mild language that is not appropriate for younger children. A lot of people will like this movie though because there are a lot of funny parts. Go out and see it in theaters when it launches on October 14th!

Description - The action packed franchise is back…with the next generation of Spy Kids! Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba) has it all: married to a famous spy-hunting television reporter (Joel McHale), with a new baby and intelligent twin step kids, Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook). When maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) disrupts her domestic bliss—threatening to take over the planet—Marissa comes out of retirement as a top secret agent. With Armageddon quickly approaching, Rebecca and Cecil are thrust into action! With a little help from some familiar Spy Kids friends, Carmen (Alexa Vega), Juni (Daryl Sabara), and their faithful dog Argonaut (Ricky Gervais) and some mind-blowing gadgets, they just may be able to save the world!
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I love this movie a lot because it is really cool. The movie has a lot of action and adventure. This movie is all about two kids who find out their step-mother is a spy and go on an adventure to try to stop a bad guy named The Timekeeper. They get themselves into some trouble but always manage to find a way out. They also are really good at playing pranks on people. Some of the main characters in the movie are Marissa (Jessica Alba), Rebecca and Cecil. My favorite character in the movie is the kids' dog named Argonaut. The dog talks and is really funny. He helps out with the baby and he gives really good advice. My favorite part in the movie is when the baby flips over a bad guy at the end. That is really funny and then they call the baby Spy Baby. Marissa is really excited to see the baby do that. I recommend this movie for ages 2 and up because there is only one scary part in this movie that I don't think little kids would like. The movie has a lot of action and a lot of funny parts. Go out and get this on DVD. Credit: Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic. This movie follows the other three Spy Kids movies by Robert Rodriguez, except there are new Spy Kids. The original Spy Kids characters are back, but they are grown up and it is so fun to see what they look like now. I like the story in this movie. When the new Spy Kids discover a giant secret, that their stepmother is a spy, they just have to get into the game to defeat the evil master who is going to take over time and change everything. He wants to turn seconds into minutes and turn hours into days, maybe even years. No one knows for sure what will happen, but it won't be good. The Spy Kids just can't resist getting involved with their gadgets and things to try to stop this evil master. My Favorite scene in All The Time In The World is when they break into the time villain's evil lair. The room is basically a clock shop and they have to find the secret entrance to break into the hideout. I love all the clocks. The spy music throughout the movie sets a perfect tome for spy work. Spy Kids All The Time In The World has a lot of action and is a fun movie for the whole family to watch. I give this movie five out of five stars because I loved the action and that they brought the old Spy Kids back, even though they're grown. Enjoy it on DVD today! Description - In this delightful holiday tale, Babar's children write a letter to Father Christmas to ask him to visit Celesteville at Christmas. Their letter never arrives because it is stolen by Babar's arch-enemy, Rataxes the Rhinoceros. He wants all of Santa's toys for himself! Can Babar find Father Christmas and save the day for Celesteville?
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Babar is a classic. The story shows kids that Santa Claus is celebrated differently in different cultures. Teaches that being polite and respectful is the best choice and you shouldn't try to cause problems. Also teaches that one should not give up and once you put your mind to doing something, like Babar, you should see it through. Visually it's very old-fashioned, which might not appeal to some kids who are used to more polished animation. A great holiday classic, fun way to introduce your kids to a vintage movie for the holidays.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This is a cute movie about the beloved elephant King Babar, and his family. Babar's children and cousin Arthur write a letter to Father Christmas asking him to visit Celesteville. Rataxes the sneaky rhinoceros takes the letter out of the mailbox and eats it. My favorite characters are Rataxes the rhinoceros, because was just plain silly and he made me laugh, and Babar, because he was determined to find Father Christmas for the children of Celesteville. My favorite scene is Babar in the bathtub having a conversation with the mouse family. They were so cute. I rate this movie 5 out of 5 stars, because there is no violence, and I recommend this movie to everyone. Reviewed by Ny'asia Bell, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic, age 8.

Description - Into the world of the Emperor Penguins, who find their soul mates through song, a penguin is born who cannot sing. But he can tap dance something fierce!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Cute cute cute. These penguins are simply adorable and the dance scenes remarkable. You will want a penguin of your own to take home. Great voice talent, fabulous animation, wonderful musical score. The Broadway style production numbers are cleverly adapted to penguins. Outstanding environmental message which should make everyone want to reduce, reuse, recycle. Some crude language, potty humor and scary monsters.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I just finished watching an awesome movie called Happy Feet. This movie is really great because it is really interesting and shows how a penguin that is a little different than everyone else makes it through and proves to everyone that it is ok to be yourself. The movie is about a penguin named Mumble who was born with happy feet. He is always bouncing up and down with his feet and dancing around. When he was just an egg his dad dropped the egg and that is why his father thinks he is always dancing. Mumble sets out on a journey to discover why all of the fish are missing and prove to his family that he is just another penguin like everyone else. My favorite character in the movie is Mumble. I like Mumble because he is really funny and he never gives up. He is determined to find out who has taken all of the fish and he believes in himself. I also like Gloria because she is one of the only penguins who believes in Mumble besides Mumble's mom. I would recommend this movie for kids ages 3 to 18. The movie doesn't have any inappropriate parts for younger viewers and it is a movie that can teach kids and adults how to be more accepting of people and not be mean just because someone is a little different. The movie also has a lot of funny parts that the whole family will enjoy. Happy Feet is an official movie title for the 2012 Kids First! Film Critic Search. Credit: Anthony Aranda, age 9, KIDS FIRST! Description - A lonely young girl in a new town makes friends with the help of a mischievous dog.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Wholesome family entertainment that demonstrates the positive differences that friendship can make in individuals, families, and communities. Emphasizes the values of generosity and individual uniqueness. Leaves you with a feeling of hope for the future. Contains profanity, rude insults, bathroom humor, and alcoholism. Portrayer of police as a bumbling southern idiot that is mocked and the landlord as the mean man it's ok to lie to were unnecessary and not part of the book.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Because of Winn Dixie is a fantastic adaptation from the bestselling novel "Winn Dixie". I think this movie is absolutely adorable. The cinematography is so perfect because it's exactly how I imagined it would be when I read the novel. The colors and feel of the story are captured beautifully. My favorite character is Gloria because she doesn't hold any harsh judgment over anyone and is a great friend to Opal. I also like Ana Sophia's character, Opal, because she is very kind and strong even when she is sad. I like the scene when Opal first finds Winn Dixie because it is a chaotic and funny scene. I also enjoy watching the relationship grow between Opal and the preacher (her father). This movie is for all ages because it's a cute, funny family film that deserves 5 out of 5 stars. Description - A young boy finds his strength as a man while competing in a brutally challenging cross-country dogsled race.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I really liked this movie a lot because it's a really good adventure movie. It has some sad, scary, and happy parts so it really gives us every emotion throughout the movie. My favorite characters in the movie are Will's dad, Will, and Gus. I like Will's dad because he sacrificed his own life to save the life of his son and his dogs. I like Will and Gus because they both work very hard to win the race so that they could save the farm and so that Will could go to college. I would recommend this movie for ages 6 and up. There are a few sad parts and a couple parts that might scare younger kids. There are some weapons in the movie such as a gun and a knife where people are threatening each other so it really is meant for kids that are a little older. Description - Based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, an underdog that never gave up on his dreams, who became the unlikely champion of the 1913 US Open.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - OK, so I just finished watching "The Greatest Game Ever Played," and I really enjoyed it. It's based on the true story of Francis Ouilmet, the champion of the 1913 US Open. He's pretty much a normal guy except that he has an amazing talent for golf. However, he's a caddy at a local golf club, so nobody thinks he can do anything. Through a lot of hard work and perseverance he gets himself a spot in the US Open. It was really strange because in the beginning it was very slow, very boring, just sort of trudging along. But at the end my dad and I, we were sitting there on the couch on the edge of our seats. The movie shows the ball rolling and rolling, Ahhhh! It was really strange because we were having these big reactions over something where we knew how it would turn out, and that says something about the workmanship of the film. I really like the film aspects of this due to the fact that, well, one particular shot really sticks in my head. The guy swings and the ball goes flying, then you fly along with the ball, then you actually go through the ball and you get to see what is inside the ball, which was a little disconcerting, and then you're seeing things from the point of view of the ball. It's very strange but very cool. I'd say this is appropriate for most age ranges. Little kids would probably be bored, but older kids might be bored at first but later on they'd really get into it. All in all, I'd have to give this a four out of five stars. By Sam Connan, Age 13, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

Description - A story centered on the friendship between a boy and a dolphin whose tail was lost in a crab trap.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This was a great movie based on a true story. This movie is great because the story is really encouraging and shows me that anything is possible. The movie is about a dolphin named Winter who gets caught in a crab trap and her tail is badly injured. She gets taken back to the Clearwater Marine Hospital where everyone there tries to help her. Her tail is too badly injured to save so they try to make a new tail for her to help her swim. The movie takes us on Winter's journey to swim again. Some of the main characters in the movie are Winter the dolphin, Sawyer, Hazel and Dr. Clay Haskett. My favorite characters in the movie are Sawyer and Winter. I like them because they are really good characters in the movie and it is really cool to see them form such a special friendship. Sawyer is the only one that Winter trusts and he wants to do everything he can to help her. I recommend this movie for all kids ages 5 to 18 because it's such a good movie. A lot of people would like this movie because there are a lot of funny parts. It's really cool to see Winter get better throughout the movie. Description - Based on the fifteenth best-selling children's book of all time, The Littlest Angel tells the story of a young boy who arrives in heaven before his time. Home-sick and lonely, he will travel back to earth, with his friendly pup Halo, to retrieve a most selfless and precious gift for The Baby Jesus. Experience the love, laughter and magic of one of the most popular children's stories of all time. From the classic book by Charles Tazewell comes the CGI animated film, The Littlest Angel.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Have you ever wondered what Heaven looks like? The Littlest Angel is an adaptation from the book The Littlest Angel by Charles Tazewell. The movie is about a clumsy angel who has difficulty adjusting to Heaven because his wings are not developed yet. He is very homesick, so he goes on an adventure with his dog to Earth to retrieve his treasure box containing things that are precious to him. Will the littlest angel complete his mission despite his clumsiness? Watch the movie to find out. All of the characters have such different personalities, so it's comical to watch them interact with one another. I also thought the voices of the characters were well suited to their personalities. The movie is very jubilant and shows that you should treat people the way you want to be treated. For example, the littlest angel was kind to everyone, including those who didn't initially like him, so he earned respect. The movie also shows that practice makes perfect, but perhaps the essential message of the movie is that it's the thought that counts which makes a gift valuable. I recommend this movie to all ages, but I think it suits more for children 3 and up. I enjoyed the CGI animation of the movie because it is simple, and the facial expressions of the characters are easily readable and adorable, so everyone can understand it. Description - This re-telling of the classic tale features a train engine that refuses to give up, teaching children that they can accomplish anything they put their mind to.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A modern day telling of a well-known classic, told in a way that young children today can easily relate to. There is a twist in the classic story. The Little Engine is a girl and a "Real Boy" named Richard is accidentally brought into Dreamland, and the tunnel to the Real World is destroyed. The music and bright colorful scenery are very appealing. Little Engine is confident and never gives up. All the characters are very entertaining. Models compassion, kindness, caring for others, never giving up and being confident in oneself. Shows respect and how to be a good friend. The bullies in the story are faced and dealt with respectfully. I found myself rooting for the Little Engine as she makes it over the mountain into the Real World.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - This movie is about a little engine in Dreamland that delivers things that kids wish for, like a doll, from Dreamland to the kids in the real world. But, "oh no!" the tunnel has closed! The trains have to get to the real world from dreamland. What will they do? Why is the tunnel closed? Is there another way to get to the real world and deliver the toys? The music in this movie is very cheerful and happy. It made me feel so hopeful, in a good way! The voices in this move are very blissful. My favorite voice is the clown because she is so goofy! My favorite character is the sock monkey, he is so funny, I love him. I have a sock monkey of my own and now I think that I know how he might sound when he talks. The age range for watching this movie is probably around 2-8 years old. I am 10 and this movie is a little young for me. But for younger ages, they will like it! The message in "The Little Engine That Could" is to keep on trying, even when things get really, really hard. Just have faith in yourself and try, try again. I give "The Little Engine That Could" 3 and one half stars out of 5 stars. But if I were a little younger I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars! It has a great message for young kids, nice animation, and fun characters. KIDS FIRST! Reviewed by Makai Weber Colvin, Age 10, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

Description - The Bannister family – including former K-9 police hero Zeus (voiced by Mario Lopez) – is back, and this time they're spending their holidays at a beautiful Rocky Mountain resort. But toss in an unexpected visit from cocky Uncle Randy (Casper Van Dien of "Watch Over Me" and The Curse of King Tut's Tomb) and his foxy poodle Bella (voiced by Paris Hilton) and a familiar pair of bumbling jewel thieves (led by Dean Cain of "Lois & Clark: The New Adventure of Superman" and The Dog Who Saved Christmas) and this holiday may be headed downhill fast! Can Zeus solve the crime, save Bella and hit the slopes, all in time for Christmas Day? Gary Valentine ("King of Queens") and Elisa Donovan ("Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and Clueless) co-star in the all-new four-legged family adventure!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The Bannister family takes off for the Colorado Rockies to spend Christmas together, but are surprised to find that a family member is already staying at mom's cabin. Throw in a couple of silly bad guys, and nothing happens the way they expect it to. A family friendly film that embraces the spirit of the holidays. The Bannister family is a great example of how we should treat each other. They don't talk at all about what toys they will get, only about spending quality time together. That is a great way to present the season to young children. Some rude behavior and excessive flatulence makes this less appropriate for young children. Children will love the "talking" dogs and dog tricks the canine actors perform in their roles. Good acting and scenery.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - I liked Zeus, because he was funny. He had a funny voice. I think my favorite character was the black dog, Trooper. He was cool because he was a police dog and he lived in the Colorado Rockies! Trooper also saved Zeus and his poodle girlfriend. The bad guys were very funny. This is a good movie for Christmas and for people who like dogs.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Teaches young children about several fruits and their colors. Well-produced, flows nicely and has opportunities for interaction throughout. There is a train of children at the bottom of the screen for the entire production who also interact, which really helps kids feel like participating. The subject matter is appropriate and educational. Also teaches additional facts about fruits. Organized into various fruits and their respective colors, discussing one fruit at a time. Bright colors, clear sound, cute animation, should be very appealing to young children. The train at the bottom was adorable and really added to the entire program.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Teaches numbers 0-10 by using example and interaction. The colors are bright, the characters are happy and the production is well-done. The methods and examples are age-appropriate and easy to understand. I particularly like the train that is at the bottom of the screen at all times with kids inside modeling appropriate interaction.
