Description - Based on the best-selling classic book, Toby's father has packed away in ice his grief over the death of his wife. When Toby is sent to stay with his very proper and somewhat forbidding grandmother over the Christmas holidays, he does not know what to do with himself. Then he discovers an attic filled with toys from the past and an unopened present from his angel mother. Inside the box is a velveteen rabbit that opens up the world of imagination for Toby. Rabbit along with Swan and Horse fill Toby's world with exciting animated adventures. Their love and insights help Toby melt the heart of his grandmother, who calls his father home. Their world reaches a crisis when Toby contracts Scarlet Fever and his beloved rabbit must be burned. Through this loss Toby and the grownups in his life come to realize the importance of family and the power of love to make us real.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Wonderful film that appeals to the entire family. The relationships, the visuals and the classic, sweet story make this one film that appeals to adults as well as children. The filmmaker took a simple story and expanded it into a full length feature without making the story feel forced. The boy's loneliness that draws him to bond with the rabbit sets the stage for a relationship change between his father, grandmother and himself. The story is simple to follow and unfolds in a natural manner. Some kids might get frightened by the fires and destruction in the imaginary world toward the end. Most will identify with the boy and his relationship with his stuffed rabbit. They will most likely be happy that the boy becomes closer to his grandmother and isn't lonely anymore. Each character is true to his or her status including the strict grandma. When poor behaviors are shown, so is kindness. I.e.. when Toby is locked in his room on his grandma's order, she still tries to find his rabbit. Some kids might have a difficult time separating the imaginary scenes from the real ones at first but will soon understand that the animated scenes signify the imaginary scenes. The characters, especially the goose and the horse, explain difficult concepts in detail. Beautiful animation mixed with live action. The scene in which the boy turns from live to animated is incredible. The quality of the cinematography is very good. Love how it brings classic literature to life.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. "I loved this story." "It is good because the imaginary world is cool. I like how he played with the bear." "I liked how one minute it is animated and the next, it isn't." "The part where the velveteen rabbit sees the other rabbits is cool. You can't tell what's real and what's not." "I would definitely watch it again. In fact, I would watch it at every chance I could as if it was the only movie I had." "The grandma was kind of mean sometimes but then she was nice. The toys tried to save the boy at the end and they did." "The rabbit almost burned saving the boy." "It made the imaginary world seem more real." "It seems like this took place long long ago. The attic was full of toys. I think it took place in England. It looks like the olden days."

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - Based on the best-selling illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney, the film chronicles the adventures of wisecracking pre-teen Greg Heffley, who must somehow survive the scariest time of anyone's life... middle school. Convinced it's the "dumbest idea ever invented," Heffley considers junior high school a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment of the cafeteria floor and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties that he must overcome to become popular. His diary - or "journal" - chronicles his thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would be) schoolyard triumphs.
From its origins as a series of online cartoons, Diary of a Wimpy Kid exploded onto the pop culture scene when Jeff Kinney's first novel was published in 2007. Selling over 30 million copies in print, Diary of a Wimpy Kid spent almost three years on The New York Times' children's best-seller list and has been translated into 33 languages.
From director Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs) and producer Nina Jacobson (The Game Plan), Diary of a Wimpy Kid features rising stars Zachary Gordon (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Robert Capron (Bride Wars) and Rachael Harris (The Hangover), as well as Steve Zahn ("Treme").
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Here is a review from our partners at Moving Pictures Magazine: http://www.movingpicturesmagazine.com/Reviews/tabid/59/entryid/3300/Diary-of-a-Wimpy-Kid.aspx
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Diary of a Wimpy Kid shows us wimpy is cool and in style. You may say, "no it isn't" but you are wrong. It shows us the ups and downs of middle school and trust me, it is all in there. One thing I was disappointed about before I saw it was it wasn't animation. But now, I am standing corrected. Zachary Gordon is actually what I would imagine Greg Heffley would be in real life. This is a movie I definitely recommend and Thor Freundenthal (director), Jackie & Jeff Filgo (screenwriters), and last but not least, Jeff Kinney (the book's author and executive producer) all did a great job.

PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF

PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 8-18
Topic - Family
Description - Modern and mythical worlds collide in a heroic epic adventure in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief . Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan, the film follows trouble-prone Percy Jackson who finds himself having problems in high school… but that's the least of his challenges. It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus have walked out of the pages of his Greek mythology texts and into his life, and they're not happy – Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Learning he is the son of Poseidon, the young teen finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, and embarks on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. Directed by Chris Columbus (Harry Potter films), starring Logan Lerman ("Jack & Bobby"), Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds), Steve Coogan (Night At The Museum films), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill films), Pierce Brosnan (The Thomas Crown Affair, James Bond films), Catherine Keener (Where The Wild Things Are), and Kevin McKidd ("Grey's Anatomy").
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The ancient gods meet the modern world as Zeus accuses a young demi -god of stealing his lightning bolt. Never knowing he was part god, Poseidon's son, Percy, is suddenly thrust into another world where he has exceptional powers, and must enter the depths of Hades to prevent a war among the gods. This film is particularly appealing because it clues a viewer in to the inner workings of Greek mythology, yet ties the mythology into the modern world. Not only is the story and imagery captivating, but it also promotes a strong sense of family bonds in a very realistic way. Percy feels like his father abandoned him, and we see the relationship develop between father and son as the plot-line develops and Percy discovers that his father never abandoned him. Although gods couldn't be with their children after birth, the father was always in Percy's mind, helping him when he needed help. There is a poignant scene near the end where father and son come face-to-face and have a realistic confrontation. The cinematography is so crisp, smooth and detailed that some of the evil characters were almost too scary for young viewers. Hades, in his god-form, is particularly scary, and the snakes that surrounded Medusa's head seem incredibly lifelike. While this might make the film inappropriate for younger viewers, these aspects are part of what made the film such a success with the teen and tween audience. The adventurous story shows how a common, somewhat dorky boy, can find something special within himself. It took his dyslexic and ADHD tendencies, and turned them into powerful weapons against the enemy. It's a good message for viewers, seeing how things that can be perceived as negative attributes can be really be used as strengths.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Viewers who watch this film might become inspired to learn more about Greek mythology. Children who watched it were discussing stories they knew from childhood even as the credits rolled. They started discussing what it would be like, and how they would act, if they were the young heroes in the film. A 17-year-old girl viewing the film was excited about the reminder of the stories she loved in her youth. The 10- and 13-year-old boys loved the sword fighting and special effects. A 16-year-old boy summed it up: "The visuals were stunning, and the music was fit for the story. I loved the models and animation with the monsters like the Hydra. It actually looked realistic. The only thing I didn't like about this movie is that the story was extremely predictable (a point the younger children disagreed with). I was able to call out what was going to happen dozens of minutes before it happened, such as needing the 4th pearl to bring his mother and his friends back (the other kids did notice this, also, but it added to the drama for them and made them feel smart). I was also able to predict who would stay in Hades." This film is one our family unanimously voted to keep in our own personal DVD library. It was too good to watch just one time.

NO LIMIT KIDS: MUCH ADO ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL
ELEVATING ENTERTAINMENT LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT FEATURE, AGES 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - A group of kids enter middle school with all their doubts and fears. Ashton, a semi-outcast routinely gets bullied by the star-football player Zach (Blake Michael). Ashton (Ashton Harrell), whose philosophy is to lay low and attract as little attention as possible. Celeste (Celeste Kellogg), a cheerleader who doesn't want to make herself popular at the expense of others. Danielle (Danielle Hill) believes that Celeste is trying to steal her boyfriend and takes revenge by casting her out of her clique. Celeste's friend Becca (Amanda Waters) stands up for her and the three band together to form a club in an abandoned theater on Main Street.
Inside the theater, they find a very interesting piece of their town's history and a seemingly homeless man, Charlie (Bill Cobbs). He connects with the kids because of his own "outcast" status and his shared love of musical theater. The kids learn that the old theater will soon be torn down and set out on a mission to save the town's landmark. They decide to do a modern day version of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Through mistaken identities and false assumptions, the kids learn a valuable lesson that you can't always judge a book by it's cover. Starring Bill Cobbs, Lee Meriwether, Celeste Kellogg and Ashton Harrell.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Good story, well made, great singing. There are some holes in the storyline but it's still an enjoyable film that kids will relate to. Ashton addresses the audience in the opening scene and speaks directly to them about the issues of middle school that will become rolled out in the storyline. The kids look like real kids, not like romanticized versions of them. The message that judging people frequently leads you to the wrong conclusion is an appropriate one. The singing and dancing are most enjoyable. Every scene contributes to the story.

PAPERBOY
LYRIC STREET PICTURES
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - The story of a paperboy and a girl on his paper route, who are trying to meet face-to-face for the first time.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Cute story about a paperboy and a girl at one house where he delivers papers. It shows caring and concern for others and the love of families amidst hardship. The young actors in this film are absolutely adorable and realistic. The storyline is pleasant and the production values very good. The relationship between the boy and his grandfather warms your heart; the way they help each other is very endearing. Even the shots of the boy riding his bike with the freedom that childhood has, even with his difficulties, will make you smile. This is truly a joyful film to watch. The fact that Paco is from a Spanish speaking family (with subtitles) in which he is bilingual is something many kids can relate to. Paco has lost his Dad and lives with his Grandpa. His paper route helps contribute to the well being of their life. The girl comes from a better off family. But, when her father loses his job and has to move, she is distressed at the idea of never seeing Paco again. Paco's grandpa encourages him to never give up and he finds a way to follow the girl and win the respect of her family. AT the same time, he learns what is truly important - each other. You have to love Grandpa's lesson: to laugh at adversity because it is just a silly joke being played on you. You don't let it get in your way with something you want.

Description - A man finds a note about a free room to stay in. But you have to be careful about this house.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Well done. The skill of the claymation make up for the fact that the film is very very short (2 minutes). While the house at 82 Westing Street consumes those who enter, the "hands" that emerge from the ground aren't terrifying. Well structured, the scenes fit together logically in a well crafted story. Non narrative, good back ground music, quality claymation.

CORAL SEA DREAMING - AWAKEN
PLANKTON PRODUCTIONS PTY LTD
Series: INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY, AGES 12-18
Topic - Family
Description - A musical odyssey celebrating the magical, but fast disappearing, world of coral reefs. Filmed over the course of 8 years, on over 2,000 dives, by Emmy Award winner cameraman and Producer David Hannan. Features Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef and Papua New Guinea.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Wow! Fantastic cinematography, beautiful soundtrack, good narration. Introduces us to a whole new world under the sea - scenes that most of us will never, in our lifetime, ever see in person. The crown of thorns sea star eating with the stomach out, exuding an acid to digest its prey rivals any science fiction movie. Uses humor such as "odd fashion is tolerated" with a fish with a seaweed mustache, gobies disagreeing, octopus with martial arts skills, and "calcium carbonate acts like coral reef cement." Very cohesive, well organized, well narrated. Engaging. Provocative. It is 87 minutes long, so be prepared to sit back and enjoy this feature length documentary on the sea.

DEBBIE AND FRIENDS: MORE STORY SONGS AND SING ALONGS (CD)
DEBBIE AND FRIENDS
Series: AUDIO CD, AGES 5-8
Topic - Music
Description - Award-winning Debbie and Friends are back with new story songs, jokes, games and surprises to delight the whole family. Special guest Bob McGrath from Sesame Street.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A nice mix of interactive and story songs. Some of the stories teach a simple lesson, most create vivid imagery and many are just silly. The music repeats refrains that are easily remembered, together with funny lyrics. Music is not overly simplistic like a lot of kid's music. Children will enjoy good music and singing, as well as exercising through interaction and dance.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - From beginning to end, the children sang and danced around. "I like the tune, the singing, the dancing… I like the whole thing!" Kids could recall the stories told in the songs, "Willie, Rosie, Ronnie and Bob have special things about them that are different and interesting," "The parents don't listen to Willy when he tells why he won't smile." "Good music, I can hear all the instruments, sounds and background voices they use to tell the stories." After listening, some kids visited the website where they were treated to some of the videos of the songs and more fun and games which enhanced the overall experience.

SYBIL LUDINGTON
KICKS MINISTRIES & VICTORY HARVEST CHURCH INC
Series: INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY, AGES 8-12
Topic - Music
Description - Sybil Ludington is a sixteen year-old girl who courageously rode over 40 miles to save New York during the Revolutionary War. Her father, Colonel Henry Ludington was the commander of the local militia near Fredericksburg, NY. Sybil is known as the 'female Paul Revere' and is a wonderful example of courage and faith.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This docudrama addresses the historically accurate story about a young woman who was a true heroine during the Revolutionary War. Its characters are personable and their backgrounds endear them to us. Sybil's family is in a difficult situation. They handle it with bravery and faith in each other and in God. Sybil is courageous and takes on the responsibilities she is given with a maturity we don't see today in 16-year-olds. Knowing that a young person could do what Sybil did proves that children are capable of remarkable things. Kids would be inspired to learn about Sybil's story and perhaps be inspired to take on more responsibilities in their own lives. The films is presented like a documentary and flows well from background information to the immediate struggles during the War. Sybil's friends and siblings have opinions that we learn about just before we learn how courageous she is. Well produced - from costumes and sets, to cinematography and audio content. This portrays a living history adults will enjoy as much as children. If you are interested in American history, you would relish this.

He meets a octopus looking character who first helps him escape from a gigantic fuzzy creature then tries to capture him for his own circus, to make money off of him. He escapes by sneezing again with his eyes wide open. It's a feel goo film, quickly paced and teaches a lesson about caring for one another and never giving up. We see the love Stephen has for his grandmother when she has a stroke. IT HAPPENS
JAY HEIT
Series: STUDENT PRODUCTION, ELEMENTARY
Topic - Music
Description - Life can be great, but there are 5 or so days in your life where you think you would rather die and "It Happens," is one of them. A fun and sad comedy about a man who has a horrible day.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This student film reminds me of the book, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. Kids will think it's silly to watch yucky things happen to the main character. What is fascinating about this is that it is directed and written by a very savvy 10-year-old who recently completed the directors program at NY Film Academy. If it was longer than 3 minutes, it would not be as appealing. The acting is very good, as are the camerawork and the background music. Be sure to catch the interviews with the director and the composer, they are worth the effort. I love this young man.

Description - When a young boy finds a winning lottery ticket lost by a lively Catholic priest, he must decide on the right course of action - finding the rightful owner or helping his desperate family.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A good holiday-themed story the family can enjoy together. Good moral about doing the right thing. When a family finds a winning lottery ticket, they make the decision to find the true owner rather than keep the $58.5 Million for themselves. The family, though apparently religious, is very realistic. Fighting parents are respectful but honest with their kids. The characters are not stereotyped and all have very distinct personalities. We see a family, which in spite of their difficulties, stick together and are honest and loving with each other. There is also a sub-message that money will not bring you happiness; it has to come from within. There is some slightly religious overtones, with this Catholic family. Also, some mild profanity and a priest drinking in one scene.

Katie gives a powerful speech at school during which something miraculous happens and she resolves both her Fred and Dad search at the same time. Life moves on but some things cannot be forgotten.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This U.K. production offers an appealing, yet sad story about a girl who lost her father. The characters are quite realistic, the acting quite good and the story really pulls at your heart strings. It's a bit of a tear jerker, as most stories are about losing a family member. Her presentation at school about what her father meant to her , though not totally realistic, portrays her love for her father. The ending is a bit corny but still sweet. The sentiment is real for so many who are missing a loved one. Although it is alluded to that her dad died in service to her country, this is not a story about patriotism nor does it try to make any other statement about cherish and remembering your loved ones. It offers a healthy way to deal with grief.

Description - "Alice in Wonderland" takes on a new twist in this Sesame Street version where familiar characters take on characters based on the book with silly names like "Cheshire Cookie Cat" and tea is taken literally as the letter "T".
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The DVD is full of great songs that invite singing along, rich visuals and seamless puppetry. Children are reminded that they have control over their own stories. This video will charm even the most serious adult while offering up lessons for preschoolers that make great use of humor just right for a young audience. Our kids jurors who watched it were quite enchanted. They loved the strange characters, from the counting caterpillar to the hatter who was mad and then sad. They thought it as quite cool that Abby could change size by rhyming. Most important, they liked seeing their Sesame Street friends acting in another kind of story where they were different people. Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - Maurice Sendak's book comes to life with lush cinematography and incredible puppetry. Things aren't going so well in young Max's life so he runs away, and his imagination takes him to the land where the wild things are. In this land, Max claims to be a king so he won't get eaten, and the wild things look to him for leadership. While being king can be lots of fun, Max learns that being responsible for everyone isn't so great, especially when his subjects get hurt by his own poor choices.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - It's an unsettling tale about a boy who deals with the hardships in life by throwing severe tantrums. Some child viewers immediately connected with Max, and saw how his dealing with the tantrums of Carol, one of the wild things, showed how anger and lashing out wasn't the way to deal with life's problems. For our young viewers, their favorite part was when the wild thing got angry and he punched the chicken's arm off and sand came out. But, the chicken didn't care. He just said, "Oh, that was my favorite arm!"

Topic - Family
Description - Democracy hits Berryland as Strawberry Shortcake and Orange Blossom compete to become the Berryfest Princess. At first the town is divided by the friendly competition. But then, Strawberry and her friends learn that competing for a title doesn't mean that people have to pick favorites.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The election is set so everyone can vote for the contestants based on the different opinions expressed in their speeches. Everyone can remain friends. Then the plot takes a twist. As Strawberry gets ready for the celebratory parade, she learns that being a leader isn't all it's cracked up to be. She and her friends are overwhelmed and starting to treat each other poorly. Not only do we see how the election process works - from campaigning to advertising and speech-making - but we also see how everyone can celebrate each other's best qualities and support each other, even when times are tough. It also doesn't help that the brothers aren't getting along as well as they usually do. In the end they are reminded that there is nothing as great as true brotherly love.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - With catchy tunes and darling animation, the chipmunks will steal your heart and have you singing along as you are reminded about the power of love. Some viewers might not appreciate the potty humor. But, the storyline was good and holds the interest of both kids and adults. HIT ENTERTAINMENT - TX
Series: SHORT AGES 2-5, ANIMATION
Topic - Family
Description - Through simple stories, kids learn about trains and also learn life lessons such as the idea that sometimes you can benefit from the help of friends.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The great thing about Thomas is that he sometimes makes poor decisions which preschoolers can relate to, such as the time he was so interested in finding the perfect gift that he forgot to invite friends to Hiro's party. He admits when he is wrong and corrects his "silly" behavior. The slow pace of the stories makes viewers feel as if they are seeing a book come to life. Thomas is a pleasure to view. It's fun seeing some live action mixed in with the cartoons like when an engineer introduces the episodes and takes care of Sir Topham Hat's mother's bird. Our preschool viewers love Thomas. They love the trains. They love all the different characters, each with its own personality and job to do. They like seeing how all the trains work together to help solve problems. Description - Saving the earth never gets old with Elmo and his gang.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Once again Sesame Street does a brilliant job mixing education with loads of fun. We learn why it's important not to litter and why it's best to completely use both sides of a piece of paper before throwing it away. Lots of songs and animated segments are mixed together with live action and puppetry, keeping young viewers glued to the screen. The messages of re-using and recycling are delivered in such a way that a preschooler gets it, yet the jokes appeal to an older crowd, making this DVD perfect for family viewing. Homeschoolers can use this as part of their science curriculum because children learn that they are a key factor in saving the earth. Our youth jurors enjoyed learning about recycling and how to help nature in a fun way. They love earth and like learning ways to help protect it. KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - These six quality shows offer many scenarios promoting positive social interaction and the importance of color and the knowledge of color for your preschooler. Barney's friendly lesson reminds us that colorful rainbows can come on rainy days; Bob the Builder's project lacks color; Thomas the Tank Engine illustrates the significance of colors in communicating. For example, Fireman Sam uses "especially red" as a warning message. The information included surprised even our jurors and especially our kid jurors who liked it a lot. Description - Based on the the story 'The Comma That Didn't Belong Anywhere,' by the poet Martha Baird. This is a charming, humorous, sophisticated and wonderful adventure of a lonely comma looking for the right sentence.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - An animated short of a story that originated as a radio play that tackles the issue of how a comma is used. It takes on the question of "how to tell a story," the idea of self-worth, individualism, fitting in, disappointment, perseverance, qualify of life, introspection and asking for help. These are all issues that we, as humans deal with but since the subject of the film is a comma, it takes on a humorous tone. Well written, well narrated, it holds your interest from beginning to end. At 24 minutes, it's perhaps a big long but makes some great talking points and is so well made, you're sure to enjoy it.

Topic - Family
Description - When the city of Biggerton has too much trash, it decides to dump it all onto the nearby city of Smallerton. Smallerton must find a way to dig itself out from underneath this mess, and teach Biggerton a lesson about resourcefulness. Nearly all of the props and artwork for this DVD have been made from reused or recycled materials.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Cute, animated short with some live characters and a good pro-recycling message that isn't political. It's about garbage, recycling and the consequences of good and bad decisions. All the artwork was made from recycled items. Biggerton claims to dump its recycling program because it's "too expensive." It has a certain, child-like simplicity without being condescending to kids. Kids will appreciate the animation being made out of real things and seeing real people being dumped on. Very easy to follow; so much so that it's appeal crosses many age groups. It is not meant to be completely accurate and uses some silly and simplistic images to make its point. However, the problems it addresses are real and kids will relate to the idea of recycling and consequences.

ADAM JOHNS
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - A young boy builds magical toy creatures for the girl of his dreams; but when they fail to spring to life on cue, he must rethink who is dream girl actually is.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - One of the cutest love stories for this age that we've seen. Very unique. It's easy to fall in love with these characters - the average boy who still believes in magic and superheroes, his 2 best friends who like him just the way he is and the girl he has a crush on who barely notices him. In the end, he notices the girl he's been friends with all along is the one who believes in magic. These kids are so cute and real with each other. The main character's talent for sewing stuffed animals, which he believes come to life with special magic, offers a unique twist. It shows kids that it's cool to not be so cool. The way the boy turns into a sort of mundane Edward Scissorhands when he creates his unique animals from scraps of materials in his shop is enchanting. It's admirable how the young friend is brave enough to express her feelings directly to the boy. This is a coming of age story that will satisfy anyone's interest in first love.

Description - Cesar has a very innocent crush on his teacher, who in turn has a very adult interest in The Principal; proving again that love can be a complex mystical abstraction.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Really cute, believable story with a pleasant message. Easy to watch. An everyday kid has a crush on his teacher. He's honest and likeable and so are the others in this short film. It moves quickly but the storyline is clear and leaves you with a good feeling in the end. Kids can relate to the early feeling of "liking" someone at school. There are no innuendos or inappropriate behavior. The kids act like kids; dad is helpful; young adults act as they do. Good production values. Background music works well. Characters are easy to grasp. Our juror commented on how much she enjoyed the film, even to the point of feeling teary at the end. There is a great daydream sequence when Cesar realizes that the teacher thinks another teacher gave her the rose he had brought her. Overall, it's well worth watching.

OUTCAST
CAMERON COVELL
Series: STUDENT PRODUCTION, MIDDLE SCHOOL
Topic - Family
Description - A short musical film where two middle school boys are living in a world of Hip Hop and they don't fit in. They both run away, run into each other, and find that they do have value and they can fit in to society. After learning a new form of dance, Tap, they return to their school and are accepted by the other kids.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This middle school student production uses music and dance to tell its story - a concept that teens can relate to. The feeling that you don't belong and trying to discover how to fit in is a universal idea for kids this age. Because one kid doesn't dance hip hop, in a hip hop world, he doesn't fit in. Another can dance but wants to "find" himself. It's a bit campy and if made by an adult you might feel differently but this was made by a 14-year-old and it's really well done. Visual and audio quality are quite good. There is a possible issue in that the kids run away. But, there are no parents shown in the story, making it somewhat of a fantasy anyway. Although the moral is real, the story is so unreal that this issue didn't bother us.

Description - Seven-year-old Evan has one wish, to be a grown-up. On a quest to live out his dream, Evan manages an office for the day where he stumbles across Cara, a woman stuck in mourning who keeps herself isolated. Boldly reaching out to her, he finds a way to put life into perspective and illuminate Cara's world.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Evan gets to live out every kid's greatest wish - he is allowed to be the boss of an office of adults for the day. However, we later find out that this is only made possible by the Dandelion Wish Foundation and Even has a fatal disease. Even spends his day making everyone's life brighter except for Cara, who recently lost her daughter to leukemia. With a simple soundtrack and compelling cinematography, this story deals with death in a positive way. Kids will love seeing how Evan turns a work day into a party day and reminds everyone to celebrate their love of life. The style is very dream like. The concept of children dying is sad and the entire film has a sad tone until the end when the mothers come to terms with their children's deaths. The little boy who plays Even is particularly charming. He reminds me of a young Michael Fox.

Not wanting to eat it, but not wanting to toss it either, Charlie tries to find another use for the lone jellybean. Eventually decides to grow her very own jelly bean tree in her backyard.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Cute, non-narrative short. Beautifully shot, very cute kids, silly story. Amusing to follow the young girl's train of thought. Not at all accurate but a good case of "be careful of what you wish for." Apparently the girl didn't want to eat the last jelly bean because it was black and she didn't like that flavor. The girl finally plants her lone, black jelly bean only to be confronted with a 2 foot jelly bean tree covered with black jelly beans. The background accordion music is delightful and fills the dialogue void exceptionally well.

Young kids won't want to miss a single splash. Narrated by Laura Dern, with music by Jerry Dale McFadden (6 min.); "Waiting for Wings" - Butterflies bloom as delicately as flowers in this visually magnificent story of beginnings, middles and ends: eggs, caterpillars and finally butterflies. Vocals and music by Crystal Taliefero and animation by Cha-Pow! (6 min.); "Goose" - A baby goose, adopted at birth by a family of woodchucks, feels like an outcast in everything she does until she discovers - all by herself - that she can fly. Narrated by Laura Dern, with music by John Jennings (7 min.)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Beautiful; visually very pleasing. These book-based stories are presented simply and true to the original story. We love the way action words are presented in "In A Small, Small Pond." "Goose" is a good tool for teaching about the Spring season and it would make a good comparison between it and Hans Christian Anderson's "Ugly Duckling." The whole collection instills a love of literature appreciation and increases learning through the activities included.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids loved the stories; found them interesting and fun to watch. They are also easy to understand. STORIES ABOUT THE EARTH

Series: SHORT AGES 5-8, ANIMATION

Description - Includes 2 shorts: "Johnny Appleseed" - John Chapman's (aka Johnny Appleseed) legacy of botanical achievements and the stories he shared with children are presented here at their very best in verse and art. Narrated by Mary McDonnell, with music by Randy Scruggs (11min.); and "Miss Rumphius" - Inspired by a true-life story, Miss Rumphius shows us how we can all make the word a more beautiful place with a simple handful of seeds. Narrated by Clair Danes, with music by John Jennings (17 min.)
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This simple story about two remarkable characters will give children some worthwhile ideals to consider. Gently and clearly conveys stories with accompanying music and art that fit the period and theme of the individual stories. The poem about Johnny Appleseed includes many of the wonderful characteristics of his life that made him an American legend. The second short, "Miss Rumphius" is based on the true life actions of 'The Lupine Lady,' Miss Hilda Hamlin. Its sentiment that "you must do something to make the world more beautiful" is a wonderful and embraceable idea. Both stories tell about a person who has thoughtfully made a contribution of beauty to our country. Both follow a life cycle from childhood to adulthood. The poetry and music of Johnny Appleseed is somewhat folksy with the sounds of apples crunching, wagon wheels rolling, birds flying and the campfire crackling. Violins and piano music transport us to a later time and place, changing in tempo as Miss Rhumbhius lives out her life amid the sounds of a pat's purr, a car engine and children playing. "There is a sparkle on the ocean and the lupines blow in the wind."
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Big hit with the kids. "Thank you for the movie mommy, I liked it a lot." "I liked when Alice sat on her grandfather's lap." "My favorite part was when Alice grew up and was planting the lupines." Kids hummed along to the piano music. They discussed what faraway place they would like to travel to, what they would do to make the world more beautiful and what they would like to plant. They imagined what it would be like to travel, like Johnny Appleseed, alone and in the wilderness. Kids enjoyed following the activities on the on-disc learning guide. "We learned a lot from this."

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
BLIND SIDE, THE
WARNER HOME VIDEO
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 8-18
Topic - Family
Description - "The Blind Side" depicts the story of Michael Oher, a homeless African-American youngster from a broken home, taken in by the Touhys, a well-to-do white family who help him fulfill his potential. At the same time, Oher's presence in the Touhys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. As a football player and student, Oher works hard and, with the help of his coaches and adopted family, becomes an All-American offensive left tackle.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Fantastic! More movies need to be made that are like this film! It is a thought-provoking, uplifting movie that is highly entertaining. This is a great family film that you can enjoy with your elementary, middle school, high school and even college kids. Sandra Bullock is a spitfire as Leigh Anne Touhy, a well-to-do wife and mom, with a compassionate heart. The film is based on the true story of the gentle, giant--Michael Oher, a homeless black teenager, who is taken in by the affluent Leigh Ann and her family and who eventually, with his new family's encouragement, becomes a football star! Oher is currently playing in the NFL. The acting is great, especially on the part of Sandra Bullock, who won an Oscar as Best Actress for this role. The story is skewed towards the positive of what was going on, but it isn't syrupy. The film inspires and make one feel hopeful about the world at large. There is no sex or graphic violence, just a super interesting story and some good filmmaking. Sit back, relax and enjoy. We recommend this film to families, and particularly those interested in sports.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. "I liked EVERYTHING about the film. The characters made you root for them. The story made me feel good about trying for a good future. The filming was good because you would forget you were watching a movie." "The acting and the words they used were great and meaningful. The scenes and sets were so real feeling I forgot I was watching a movie. The costumes were great too. I liked how Big Mike first picked striped shirts that made him look like a big bumble bee. They used the costumes to show different life styles. You got to know everybody like family." "My favorite part was the sports action scenes. Especially when Michael pushed the bully over the wall. I like the scenes where Michael suddenly realized he could do it and got really great at football and how surprised the other team was and how happy his team was." "I would recommend this film to friends. And I did recommend it to friends and family and they liked it too because it's a very meaningful movie and it's a true story. It is for kids age 10 and up because of a little bit rougher scene with a group of guys Michael used to hang out with and I think really little kids wouldn't understand the story. But for 10 and up they will love it, even grown-ups. It is a family kind of film."

FIREWALKER

FIREWALKER
JENNIFER MARTIN
Series: SCREENPLAY FOR AGES 8-12
Topic - Family
Description - Narrating her ordeal in the heroic rescue of her kidnapped cousin on the fiery banks of the volcano, Kilauea, a spirited teen salvages her reputation and taps into her legacy as a Hawaiian firewalker.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Alana is accused by a classmate of lying about her firewalking experiences. She tells the stories of her adventures to interested students and by the end of the story the student come to appreciate her tales and realize that she is telling the truth. This would be an entertaining film that could offer children a glimpse into other cultures. Nicely deals with bullying. Flashbacks between school and her summer in Hawaii keeps the story moving well. Teaches a lot about Hawaiian culture and religious beliefs. An adventurous and entertaining story. Some minor negative aspects in the screenplay were unnecessary; minor swearing and mentions of groping and sexual harassment.
