Description - Become a Magical Color Caller and go on a color expedition with the clever kids on the Snapatoonies train. Call out the shapes and colors you see along the way!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - The colors are bright and it is repetitive, which is great for very young children. The name of the train, Snapatoonies, is catchy. I liked that it covered colors such as gray and pink, and not just the primary colors. A great way to learn about colors and shapes. KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Teaches numbers 0-10 by using example and interaction. The colors are bright, the characters are happy and the production is well-done. The methods and examples are age-appropriate and easy to understand. I particularly like the train that is at the bottom of the screen at all times with kids inside modeling appropriate interaction. Very cute, repetitive, which is good for learning, but not always entertaining. However, the style was very kid-friendly. Perfect for kids just learning to count.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The kids all interacted with the numbers, some answered questions out loud when the narrator asked. The kids attention sometimes wandered, but overall they seem interested. "I like the numbers and the kids." Children watching seem to learn and enjoy the bright colors and music.

WHISTLEFRITZ LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Spanish immersion DVD. Children love a birthday party, but when is Fritzi's? Join fun-loving Fritzi the mouse for a festive introduction to Spanish language-learning. It's year-round fun as children learn words and phrases in Spanish.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Teaches Spanish to a young audience using pictures, animation and a fun host. Uses Spanish immersion techniques, the person watching has to figure out the meaning of the words through pictures and context. It's appropriate, though challenging. Children as young as one or two-years-old can enjoy this. Stimulates natural curiosity of kids and their ability to learn through immersion. Has a very welcoming feel to it. Friendly and encouraging. Some adults felt the kids needed a more direct connection to the subject in order to make the Spanish word connection to what was being depicted. Children become familiar with a new language, while getting information about the culture of the people who speak the language. Tremendous educational value, because it immerses the child in the Spanish language and they seem more involved in learning the language. Broadens children's global perspective and stimulates language development.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - "It's funny, I like the mouse!" "I liked the Spanish words. The kids in the video are funny." Seemed to appeal more to kids over age 5 and even early teens. Children felt proud when they identified a word correctly. Younger kids sometimes didn't understand what the music was saying, but still got up to dance. Some kids under age five got bored and others frustrated because they didn't understand the material. This seemed to especially resonate for kids over age five, who could follow along with the content and were excited to learn new words. A few of the 5-7 year old girls wanted to learn more Spanish so they could talk to some of their friends from multi-lingual homes.

LITTLE SONGS (COLORS 1)

KIDS FIRST ENDORSED
LITTLE SONGS (COLORS 1)
STELLA PRODUCTIONS
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Music
Description - Educational and original music by award-winning artist Vicki McCrone.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A combination of songs about colors with still photographs that include the colors. The images are beautiful and keep everyone's attention. Because each section showed many colors in it, it was hard to point out to the kids which color the song was about. It was fun, songs were cute and the tempo was consistent, though not exciting. The visuals are entertaining and the DVD is very professionally done.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - "I liked the song RED. I liked the song YELLOW and the school bus was cool." "I thought about colors. I want to learn colors." The kids said they liked the pictures and songs. The film kept some of the kid's attention, they remembered the songs. Others wouldn't sit still, but enjoyed the DVD as background music. The photos really go their attention. They seemed to enjoy it.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Gentle pop-rock style that will be enjoyable to many and too slow and sleepy for others. Some jurors found the lyrics to be fun and interesting. Our urban kids didn't relate to them. Adult jurors said they appreciated the production quality. Others found it confusing and too "new age." Adults who were not excited it still felt it would make a great CD for babies and toddlers to help them go to sleep. Each song is a separate entity and can be played by itself.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - With adult engagement, children were able to use their imagination to think about some of the lyrics in the songs. One parent noted that the children "played well together" while it was on. "It made me sleepy." "The lady sounded nice." "The words were happy, but I didn't understand them all." "I wanted to learn about a bug in a puddle!"

NEW YORK STREET GAMES

NEW YORK STREET GAMES
FALCO INK / HIGHBROW ENTERTAINMENT
Series: INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY, ADULT
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Covers the origins of the street games that were played and shared by all children within inner city neighborhoods. It's narrated by Hector Elizondo and features interviews with Regis Philbin, Ray Romano and Keith David, among many others.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - A gem, especially for those who grew up in NYC or have heard the countless stories of what kids used to do in the summer and on weekends. A romantic, sentimental feel to it with wonderful memories. Kids would learn a little history, about life before computer games and other modern toys. A fun and in-depth analysis of NYC games and kids. Adults had fun yelling out the rules they could remember while watching. It is fun to see children playing, and value in their learning the games and understanding the history, but this is more geared toward adults in it's language, than toward kids. The archival footage of children playing stickball, stoopball, etc., while the adults watched from sidelines and windows was fun and historical. Provoked many questions concerning the way our children play today and their healthier more active lifestyle. Comes with a game rule booklet to aid in the quest to revive some of these seldom played games.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - HOUSE
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATED
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about objects in the home, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovable, non-frightening characters, easy-to-understand stories with gentle humor and great educational value for developing early language skills. The video encourages engagement and participation with its questions such as, "What sound is that?" "What words do you remember?" There are 4 vignettes: Bath time, Who's Hiding in the House, Sounds in My House and Clean-up Time. The total time of the video is 30 minutes but each story can be viewed separately. The content is suitable for very young children with friendly characters, relatable stories, lovely cadence of voice-over narration. Its gentle humor and positive messages are just right for this age. The four characters include two male characters and two female characters. The characters' genders are recognizable, race is not a factor and the characters are typically middle class as each has its own home, clean clothes and toys. The stories respect the fact that children can get dirty (while eating or painting) but lets children know its okay to get dirty and that one must later take a bath to clean up. The stories have gentle humor as the characters get dirty all over again even after they take their baths. There are no repercussions if one gets dirty again which is a forgiving, accepting message. The simple animation style is appropriate for very young children as is the use of simple sentence structure. The voice over by the narrator is warm and loving. The use of sound effects is education and gentle such as the sound of the phone ringing, the doorbell, birds chirping, splashing water, bounding of a ball. The use of color adds to the visual experience and is not glaringly brilliant. In all four stories, repetition is used. Vocabulary is appropriate to this age with a recap at the end of each vignette when the narrator asks, "What words do you remember?" For example, in thee Bath time vignette, the new words that are emphasized are bath, bubbles, boat and soap. The interaction between the characters is cooperative, kind, and friendly.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The kids giggled, danced, clapped their hands and were all engaged. They repeated the new vocabulary words such as door, couch, chair, table. Some growled and made claws with their hands and pretended to be Larry the Lion. Some, who had watched other titles in the series, recognized the characters and called out the names of Larry, Iggy Dee-Dee and Edward. They responded to the narrator's questions, "What words do you remember?" with their new vocabulary words. Kids loved the "Sounds in My House" section. When a visual of a phone appeared onscreen, they spontaneously said, " phone." When the narrator says bye bye to Larry, they repeated it and waved as well. This is obviously well planned out for this age group, who loved it, learned new words and found reinforcement for social skills they are developing. It encourages cooperation and friendship.

Description - So Smart! Is an award-winning brand, trusted by parents for over a decade. In this DVD, So Smart! Friends Edward, Iggy, Dee Dee and Larry will first introduce your little one to simple words about pets, then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery and soothing music, make So Smart! A winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This DVD provides an entertaining supplemental to children's language development. The narration and animation is sweet and simple. Use repetition but keeps it to a level that we don't lose interest. Very predictable, which is good for this age group. It offers a way to watch and hear things, that if not familiar, can become so and a nice easy to watch pace. Allows for interaction, asking questions that little ones can easily answer. Pets are a great topic of interest for toddlers.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it though some needed some prompting to engage in the interactive sections. With adult interaction, kids repeated words and responded with answers. When they saw a cat, one child yelled "kitty" and another one "meow", using the language skills they already had and applying them to the situation. All the kids who paid attention seemed to enjoy the animation and sounds. Got less attention from the kids who were not really ready for language development of this kind. Overall a nice video for kids ready to learn new words and interested in watching media on TV.

Friends Edward, Iggy, Dee Dee and Larry will first introduce your little one to simple words about things that go, then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery and soothing music make this suitable for ages 1-3.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Wonderful stories, animation, characters and music, blended with an appropriate pace. Teaches and entertains at the same time. High quality animation kids will love and keep parents interested as well. Featured pictures of things kids love - cars, trucks, trains, boats and other transportation vehicles. Broken down into five smaller stories so you can easily watch a little at a time. Stories are more simplistic at first, then with more problem-solving, such as the story about the chicken who has a piano and wants to take it home, but she needs a truck first. Each story highlights a different character and kids are given the opportunity to participate by saying what they learned.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children really enjoyed interacting, with younger children yelling "doggie" or "chicken" at the animals they recognized. Boys especially liked the vehicles and yelled out the answers at the end of each section. Loved to yell out during the "what words did you learn" sections. Kids noticed the colors of the backgrounds and it created a ton of discussion between all of the children, even the one-year old!

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about nighttime, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Lovely, simple animation and calm tone by the narrator. Flows nicely and has good predictability which children this age love. Offers a way for children to watch and hear things that, if unfamiliar, can become familiar. The video uses words that the children should already be hearing and mixes them with words that may be unfamiliar. This may help their vocabulary grow, particularly if a parent or caregiver watches along and emphasizes the words in other contexts, outside of the video itself. The animal characters are very cute. The colors are bright but not over the top. The use of the music is thoughtful and suitable to the program and audience. This video makes a good supplement to a child's learning development and is repetitive and predictable enough to work and yet not become tedious. Among the very best of DVDs for the 1-3 year old group.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Very engaging. Easy to play in segments. The 2 and almost 2's stayed focused for the entire show, saying words for objects they knew. As each segment began, one 2-year-old would say, "Ooh! More!" The 10-month-old looked up now and then but was more interested in his toys than the DVD. The 2's enjoyed a second viewing as much as the first. One 22-month-old, who is more verbal than the 25-month-old, said words without prompting - from the beginning he said, "moon, star, night night, book, light, etc." There are really no opportunities for singing, dancing, playing along, but the 2-year-old oohed and smiled when he liked something. When the narrator asked, "Let's see what we can remember…" they didn't respond. When the adult facilitator asked the same thing, they did. They didn't grasp the idea of someone onscreen asking them a question. Some 4 and 5-year-olds also viewed it, found it darling. But, of course, they already knew these words.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - OUTSIDE

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - OUTSIDE
ECHO BRIDGE HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about being outside, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Really loved this DVD. Great music. Loved the piano music. Nice uses of pauses to catch a child's attention. For example, pause then say "leaves fall" and then see them fall. The music is toe-tapping. Pace is great, moves very smoothly and logically from one story to the next. Coloration is pleasant. Some infant DVDs are just blasting full of brilliant colors, this is much more subtle and thus, more enjoyable. There are a couple of instances where the backgrounds blended too well with the characters but that was infrequent. Great use of repetition. Words are restated, then shown again with an image. The producers seem to respect that babies and toddlers need to have their attention caught, then caught again. The pause effect addresses this well. Good use of exercises to encourage memory skills for what was shown. This worked particularly well for slow learning children or a child who takes longer to express himself verbally. The activity guide that comes with it can be printed out and used to reinforce what has been watched. There is also a website to go to for more information about the video and the company. All of our jurors said they would buy this for their own use.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - The children were very engaged, particular the 2-year-olds. They laughed at some parts and repeated words from the video. All the children liked the segments with the animals in it best. The boys in particular liked the animals and the girls liked repeating the words they heard. All enjoyed counting along. It was a bit slow for some of the 2's but the 6 month old enjoyed it a lot until he lost interest at the end. A couple of 5-year-olds watched it but didn't find it interesting enough to stay with it. They went on to other things.

SO SMART: BABY'S FIRST WORD - GET DRESSED

Series: SHORT AGES 0- 2, ANIMATION
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - So Smart! is an award-winning brand trusted by parents for over a decade. This new animated series, Baby's First-Word Stories, is created especially for 1 to 3 year-olds, who are beginning to explore the rich world of language. In this baby DVD, So Smart! friends Edward, Iggy, Larry and Dee Dee will first introduce your little one to simple words about getting dressed, and then build sentences and stories around them. A deliberately gentle pace, engaging imagery, and soothing music make So Smart! a winner for both children and parents.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Sweet, easy to understand, simple stories, some gentle rhymes (day/hurray), lovely production values and delightful, upbeat music. The narrator is easy to listen to, the characters are non-threatening. The DVD encourages the child to participate by asking questions such as, "What words do you remember?" There are a series of short vignettes including: Iggy Gets Dressed, Let's Play in the Snow, Hats for Everyone, Edward Finds an Umbrella, and Edward's New Shoes. The use of repetition helps children learn new words. Participation is encouraged by asking the viewer questions they can easily answer. This is an easy re-introduction to colors, seasons, numbers, seasonal activities and getting dressed. The characters are very likable, they behave in friendly and caring ways toward one another. They resemble children and genders are portrayed by the little girl wearing the color pink and the boy wearing the color blue. The stories are gentle and portray simple frustrations such as a child might experience in life: a button falling off, the rain coming, the snow melting, a zipper breaks. Characters are shown dealing with these little inconveniences in such a way that we can see how easy it is to replicate. Very nicely done, a plus for any toddler library.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. A multicultural group of Hispanic, Asian and Caucasian kids all enjoyed it. The girls seemed more transfixed than the boys but both clapped, pointed and waved at various times. Several children remembered and called out the characters' names. Several called out "Hello" when the characters said, "hello." Many counted along with the onscreen counting. Most responded when the narrator asked, "What words do you remember?" They answered, "snow, umbrella, etc." When asked how much they liked it, all said, "Great!"

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - From the adult perspective, this is a bit tough to get into. There is no dialogue; it's just music and watching the dog. Daisy goes to different places - the fire station, the park. And, she counts to 10. Very mediocre production levels.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Most appropriate for the 2-year-olds. It's a bit long even for them. They enjoyed seeing the fire truck, pointed to the squirrel, the ducks. Definitely the kids enjoyed this more than the adults.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Daisy is cute but even our dog lovers found this a bit slow moving. It can be fun to watch shows like this with very young children as it shows some everyday activities that they might recognize or call out the names for. However, doesn't hold children's attention for long. There is no real story being told. Daisy, the dog visits places and the story evolves from where she goes.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Mixed reactions from kids. "Daisy visits places but there is no real story" Some kids liked the images of balloons, sailboats, and the ABCs. They did enjoy seeing the dog. "It's a happy dog who shows you what happy is." They seemed to like parts of it, especially the dog, Daisy. That is the one thing that holds it together.

YOUNG MINDS - NUMBERS AND COUNTING
MATHTUTORDVD.COM
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Teaches children numbers and counting from 1-10 through animation and images of nature.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - As a program designed to teach pre-verbal children the numbers one through ten, it does a pretty good job. The classical background music is pleasant enough but after a while it begins to feel like I'm listening to elevator music. It is well produced with clear images and audio and a pleasant narration by a child. However, I am convinced that unless this is watched together with an adult, a child under the age of 2 would not get much out of it.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Mixed reviews. "It was happy." "It was pretty nice." "I counted with it." "I liked the lions." "I wanted to see sharks." One 4-year-old counted along and easily named all the objects. After a while however, she asked to watch a different DVD. Some two-year-olds started recognizing numbers. One two-year-old lost interest in a few minutes and was quite verbal about not wanting to watch more. End result of our testing with kids - some liked it, some didn't. None wanted to watch the entire thing.

SIGNING SAFARI: ALL ABOUT ME! DAILY LIFE AND FAMILY SIGNS
SIGNING SAFARI
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 2-5
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Emphasizes the beauty and accessibility of American Sign Language for parents and their children by highlighting 15 family life signs through upbeat original rhymes. Signs for potty, bath, grandmother and grandfather are included.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very engaging, well produced video which teaches what it sets out to do very well. A good variety of visual strategies are used, both with people in a studio and footage of the actual thing or activity we are learning to sign. Nicely paced and good length. It is simple. Takes things one at a time. Isn't too slow or too fast. Gives us a sign to learn, and reinforces it by showing the thing or activity. Great content. Keeps you engaged. Visuals are well shot and well edited. Different races, ages and genders are well represented. The time spent on each item is appropriate and gives audiences of all ages the opportunity to absorb the material. Uses a variety of strategies to get the lessons across. It ends a bit abruptly. Definitely leaves you wanting to learn more signs.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - A bit hit! "Yeah! It's really special. I like all the things they talked about with the signs, especially the doggie." "It's great. I like this movie." "My friends would like cuz it's great and I think they would want to learn about signs too." "I liked learning the signs." "I want to learn sign language. I liked the diaper change one. I liked the doggies having a bath." One two-year-old pointed excitedly to the twin brothers when they were hugging. Both two year olds moved closer to the TV once they started really watching it. The four and five-year-olds were doing the signs as they saw then. One five-year-old said, "That is true" when they said Grandpas teach you to fish. "Mama, I want a (signs bath)." After watching, everyone continued to do the signs they had just learned. Socks, sister, change, kitty and potty were popular.

SIGNING SAFARI: BEGINNER SIGNS & ALPHABET

KIDS FIRST ALL STAR
SIGNING SAFARI: BEGINNER SIGNS & ALPHABET
SIGNING SAFARI
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Introduces families to 15 of the most common signs used with young children. Children will enjoy learning ASL signs through original rhymes, live child models and playful puppets. Signs like, I Love You, hurt and pacifier are featured.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very nice with catchy rhymes. Presentation is very professional. Content is geared at pre-verbal children. Engaging and entertaining for both children and adults. Appropriately paced, teaches life skills of signing as a way to communicate feelings. It may stimulate language development and improve manual dexterity and coordination. It is filled with excellent demonstrations of sign language by both kids and adults. Great rhythms, use of children's voices. Each sign is taught by first demonstrating it by an adult or child as a close up. After demonstration, there is a montage presenting situations where signing could be used, followed by a repeat of the original demonstration. Very suitable for babies 6 months of age up to first graders. The visuals and rhymes are arresting even without understanding what sign language is all about. In truth the video does not refer to the hearing impaired at all, the signs are simply presented as another form of body language. All races and ages of children and adults are represented, including a Downs Syndrome child. It does make one want to learn more about signing and its uses.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids paid attention to the rhyming and watched the people in the video making the signs. They were prompted to say the words they knew. Most of the children loved the video and called out various names of things they saw. They moved along to the music, clapping hands and swaying. They responded to their teacher as she reinforced the images and sounds onscreen. Most kids tried to sign along with the show. When the video shows the sign for "eat," the teacher called out "eat." in English and Spanish and replicated the actions onscreen. The children replicated as well. Pace is lively for a first time viewing. However, to master the signs one would have to watch each segment repeatedly and practice. The entire video can be viewed in one showing. However, in order to master each sign, the segments can be viewed separately. In addition, the alphabet can be viewed on its own. Excellent.

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Mrs. Ashley is ready to teach fundamentals like colors, sizes and more! Your child will go along with Lenny, Penny & Gifford on fun and stimulating adventures!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Fun to watch. The place is appropriate for younger ones; slow enough that they can easily catch on and participate. It shows the viewer what it is like to be inside a classroom then goes into a classroom lesson. The lesson about colors and flowers has good stick ability including the game to find and match the colors to the flowers. The teacher's interactions with her students is exemplary. There is a point when the teacher shows the children how to be respectful of one another after one of the students tells the other that he is doing something wrong. Production quality is good, with fun songs included. The design of the sets has bright colors that are suitable for its audience.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Enjoyed it. "It is pretty fun. I like the flowers." "They treated each other nicely because they are happy." "I think my friends would like it like I do." " I think I want to learn about sunflowers." 2-year-olds pointed to the screen and wanted to eat the apple onscreen. They shouted out words along with the show and moved along to the songs. BABY PRODIGY - 30 MINUTES TO A QUIET BABY
BABY PRODIGY COMPANY
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Family
Description - Soothe and relax your baby with delightful animations, adorable puppet scenes and calming visuals. A must have for anyone trying to quiet a fussy child. Starring celebrity characters Dookie and Dottie Duck!
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Nice video for adults to watch together with their child, ages 1-3. The merits are really only realized when there is adult interaction with the content. The interactive portions are outstanding. The structure, continuity and style are very good. Some portions are perhaps a bit fast for the youngest kids, but still very good. Overall it is well paced, suitable for the audience and holds their interest. The attitude is respectful of toddlers and introduces concepts such as color recognition and matching. Production quality is good. The sections about color, food and animals could easily lead to other discussion and activities if the parent is actually watching with the child.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Children in our jury were 20 months to 3 1/2 years in age. They definitely enjoyed the show and, in fact, groaned when it ended. One responded with an enthusiastic "ya" when asked if he wanted to watch it again. They seemed to like the stuffed animals and the music. Overall, they liked the "real objects" better than the drawings. They pointed to objects, participated in color matching activities, danced along to the songs and one speech delayed 3 year old said "train" (a new word for him) while watching. There are portions that encourage interactions - naming colors, matching colors, etc where you need an adult interacting with the child to get the full benefit. The color matching part is a bit fast for the children. They would have had more success if they had more time to figure it out on their own. There are non-interactive portions that are a bit slow and the kids started to lose interest but as soon as the section and pace changed, the kids re-engaged. It's not easily divided into segments in the menu but an adult could pause and skip to view certain segments.

Topic - Family
Description - Four magical creatures that solve everyday dilemmas represent different aspects in a growing toddler's life: contentment, curiosity, hunger and tiredness. Toddlers can relate to their own needs and feelings by identifying with a Cuddly.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Good concept for introducing simple concepts about feelings to toddlers. The animated characters are easy to identify, each one is a different color and has a different sound they make. Note that they speak a sort of gibberish that occasionally has an English word in it but mostly they gibber, sigh, groan and mumle. There is a male narrator who speaks excellent English and who guides the viewer through the show. The sets are simple and familiar - i.e.. an outside scene with trees and a blanket spread on the grass where the characters sit. A home with a bathroom that has a sink, a step stool and a mirror. When the character, Tickles figures out that he doesn't need the step stool any longer in order to see himself in the mirror, everyone celebrates.

KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very good film but contains some profanity for which we would only show this to an adult audience, including the "f" word. There is also some sexual behavior which makes it unsuitable for children such as a couple having sex in a closet. KING
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: FEATURE FILM, AGES 12-18
Topic - Family
Description - Nominated for nine Emmy Awards®, this "astute and compelling" (Variety) biography based on the remarkable life of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., takes an intimate look at one of the world's most public heroes during one of the most tumultuous times in American history. Starring Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson and Ossie Davis, King is a riveting tale that appropriately honors a true legend. In 1950s/60s America, the civil rights movement found its leader in a Southern Baptist minister. Using lyrical eloquence, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., motivated masses of people black and white to demand equality by way of nonviolent protest. But in spite of his peaceful agenda, Dr. King was often the target of terrible violence. He was never swayed from his path, however; for by the time he was assassinated in 1968, Dr. King had already defined dream that would change a nation forever. Starring Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson, Ossie David, Howard Rollins, William Jordan, Cliff DeYoung, Tony Bennett
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Excellent epic series. At 270 minutes, you've got a mini series here that most will want to watch in sections. It moves along chronologically and pays homage and respect to some of our early leaders in the civil rights movement but Dr. King is the main focus. Nicely done, excellent structure and style. It takes a pretty object view of our nation's civil rights history and highlights some of the embarrassments and some of the triumphs. The racial discrimination characteristic of the times is portrayed in historically accurate ways. What is also portrayed is King's stand and conviction to non-violence. It gives a lot of insight into the life of an important individual and is very inspirational. It exposes the tragedy of the assassination, the riots and the discrimination of the time. On the heels of the historic election of an African American to the office of the President of the United States, this is dually compelling.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids enjoyed it though felt it was too long. "It was really really long." "I learned things I didn't know about Martin Luther King Jr." "Dr. King is quite a role model. He was against violence to anyone." "Wow! I can't believe people treated each other like that." "It was like the slave times all over again." They recognized the discrimination and racism as wrong and commented on how incredible it was to learn about since they had not seen it in their lifetime (fortunately). "I wrote a report on MLK last year so this was interesting." Favorite part: When he gave his 'I Have a Dream' speech."

MUHAMMAD ALI AKA CASSIUS CLAY
TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENTERTAINMENT
Series: DOCUMENTARY, ADULTS
Topic - Family
Description - "A study of crazy brilliance and flamboyant sincerity" (LA Herald-Examiner), a.k.a. Cassius Clay presents a fascinating look at the incredible life and achievements of one of the most courageous, outspoken and charismatic figures of boxing: Muhammad Ali. Born Cassius Clay in 1942, Alisoon rose to become a renowned athlete, an articulate author and a compelling political leader. Audacious, ambitious and totally fearless, Ali became a symbol of pride, a legend of hope and one of the most extraordinary cultural icons of the 20th century. Filled with "plenty of meat in the visual material" (Newsweek), a.k.a. Cassius Clay charts the voyage of a man who grabbed Olympic gold at the age of 18, captured the world heavyweight title at 21 and ultimately came to power as one of the most forceful leaders of the American civil rights movement. Featuring clips from his most celebrated fights with Archie Moore and Sonny Liston, rare interviews with his trainer Cus D'Amato and extraordinary footage of Ali during his alliance with Malcolm X, a.k.a. Cassius Clay is an "intelligently and artistically assembled" (Los Angeles Times) and "provocative" Box office) documentary. Starring Cassius Clay Cus D'Amato, Richard Kiley, Robert De Niro.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Cassius Clay was very aggressive in his quest to live out his personal legend. This documentary is well constructed. It tells a well rounded story about this World Championship boxer. It is easy to become involved in the film and follow it from beginning to end. It explores his life from resilient boxer to inspiring speaker - stressing Muhammad Ali's important role in history. It includes information and footage about slavery and the past struggles of the African American people. At the end of the film, the narrator says that "A champion is a species of hero who is nourished by misfortune which is why he attracts legend," which goes directly hand in hand in describing the life of Muhammad Ali. The editing of the archival footage comes together nicely. It follows a linear timeline, starting with Ali's beginnings of boxing and ending with his newfound beliefs,. It shows how the one-tracked Cassius Clay who cares about nothing more than being great becomes Muhammad Ali. There is a fair amount of violence in this film and it does tent to glorify his pride and lack of humility. He would repeatedly say things such as, "I'll whoop any man in the world… I am the greatest!" to any opponent.

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - In the second episode of the Jack, the Cuddly Dog, Jack chases his red ball across the USA by plane, train, automobile and balloon making many friends on the way. He explores spatial concepts with a unique soundtrack of American classics.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very enjoyable, great background scenery. Seeing all the animals in their natural habitat is a plus. Jack's name is repeated often enough to keep kids looking for him. The jack in the box is good and its movement helps hold the kids' attention. Good way to teach colors and words. It could be a good learning tool for history with older kids. The language is very age-appropriate and easy to follow. Good repetition that is not annoying. The storyline of going from one side of the country to another is cute and shows us examples of geographical significance such as the Grand Canyon, the sunflowers in Kansas. Those jurors from Kansas loved that their state song, "Home on the Range" is used. The music is well done throughout.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - All the kids except for the baby waved hello and goodbye to Jack and the ball. The older kids repeated the words such as dog, rain, ball and water. The baby did watch the bouncing balls or the movement of things across the front of the screen. One five-year-old who is attention deficit and usually doesn't watch anything from beginning to end was quite interested in watching a second time. Another five-year-old asked why Jack kept going away. Two kids both picked it out the next day to watch it again. A few scenes are slow and at the end, most lost interest in it. Overall, the kids enjoyed following the ball and Jack. They really liked the real scenes of animals, trains, etc.

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Benjy, a 14-year old boy, is presenting his classroom video blog on respect. Through a combination of skits, group discussions, commentaries, and a short documentary, Benjy's blog reveals how young people think about and practice respect for others.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Very enjoyable. Seeing how involved the young people are is compelling. They share their views on respect in a variety of ways. The format is engaging as it switches formats, using skits, discussions, and other examples. Students can easily see what it means to show disrespect. The production is wonderfully assembled with excellent video and audio quality. Many children are not being taught good values today. Respect is such a basic quality that children need to learn and would eliminate a lot of problems in the world that emerge from lack of it. What is great about this short film is how the children talk about this subject and give their views.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Liked it. "It makes us aware of how bad it is to disrespect someone." "Although it is not entertaining, it helps us improve ourselves and the different activities are fun." "It points out how bad it is to participate in disrespectful behavior and how hurtful it is." THREE APPLES FALL
LCW PRODUCTIONS, LLC
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 5-8
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Based on an Estonian fairy tale adapted by Sally McCluskey, the story follows two mysterious, magical travelers. Adepta, played by Bonnie Johnson (Patch Adams, Prince of Tides, Sleeping with the Enemy) is a wise older woman who is teaching irreverent Novichio, portrayed by Aaron Mills, how to use magic. When three apples fall from the sky, the travelers each take one and give the other to a poor family who had shared their food scraps with them. Upon giving away the apple, Adepta tells the young mother to sew some decent clothes for her children and that whatever she does in the morning she will be doing forever. She begins sewing and discovers that the meager amounts of cloth she'd saved become and endless roll. A wealthy lady who earlier had run the travelers off her property learns of her good fortune and demands they return to her house. Reluctantly, Adepta and Novichio go and endure her insincere hospitality. They leave her with the same message. Immediately, she begins to count her money but is suddenly struck with a sneezing fit that, apparently never ends.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Interesting insight into a folktale of another culture with a message to not be greedy. Production values are okay, nothing fancy but clear. Costuming, sets - good. Appropriate.

Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Testing tongues is lip-smacking fun! Yummy and yucky, sweet and sour, Bruce Brain and Mojo mouth taste their way through a delicious adventure. Trying new foods becomes fun and helps children discover new things about the world. Country tunes get kids moving.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Educational and fun with excellent information promoting healthy eating and living. Love how people of all ages are involved gives it a plus in terms of intergenerational role models. The graphics and production technical aspects are clear and concise. Excellent pace, great colors. It is well thought out, makes good use of puppets. One juror said, "This is the best children's educational DVD I have seen in a long time."
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. Especially when they get to guess what fruits or vegetables the kids are trying blindfolded. They related to the images of food onscreen - apples, oranges, peaches with ice cream! Yum, that was a favorite. They could laugh and giggle and still learn about food and taste. The language is perfect, not over their heads. They enjoyed answering the questions asked. Another part they talked about was when the show discussed eating dirt and the puppet thought it was chocolate cake. That brought a good laugh. They also enjoyed the scene with the milk mustaches on the puppets - it is something they can relate to. Fun and enjoyable over all.

BRAINCANDY: SMELL MY WORLD

KIDS FIRST QUALIFIED ENDORSEMENT
BRAINCANDY: SMELL MY WORLD
BRAINCANDY
Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Kids love to sniff out all kinds of scents! Sweet & stinky kids find out what the nose knows. Nusi Nose and Bruce Brain sniff the answers to scent-sible questions. Kids turn lemons into lemonade and discover how smell can keep them safe! Blues & Jazz.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Younger children will probably find this visually appealing but the idea of learning about the sense of smell without actually smelling anything is a bit far-fetched. The segments are short and sweet with good ideas such as using a game show format. There are dance breaks to keep the kids from getting antsy, but they seem to make it a bit manic. There are lots of things that toddlers will find appealing in this program: children their own age, puppets, bright colors, things that they see in their own world, but will they "get" watching other children smelling to understand smelling??? Production values are not very high.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids were attentive to parts of this but under 2's were unenthusiastic. They said the puppets were cute, and funny and the babies were cute. When asked what certain things smelled like in the video, they gave mixed responses. They wanted to show that they knew the answers to the game show questions by touching the screen. Some shouted out the names of the body parts of the puppets represented. They loved the slapstick elements, i.e.. Food being dumped on the nose and the nose taking a bubble bath.

Series: INDEPENDENT SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Education/Instructional
Description - Introduces babies to 24 words and signs to encourage them to explore and begin to communicate about the wonders of the world around them. Offers signs for colors, foods, nature and play.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Good teaching tool for parents who wish to explore teaching young, pre-verbal children to sign so they can communicate with them. It shows several very young children using signs to ask for juice, water, and identifying objects and colors. Well produced. Very clear, colorful, good blend of live action with adult and baby characters, live action animals and toys. For example, to illustrate the word "frog" a toy is shown, several different live action frogs, and of course the host illustrates the signed word for it. There is no storyline. Important that a parent watch with the child for the best affect.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Kids interacted with the program and it held their attention for the most part. The youngest went up and touched the TV screen. Kids liked the toys in the film that illustrated the words (such as the green toy frog). They responded positively to babies shown on the screen. This is definitely a film requiring adult assistance. The older kids do very well but the pre-verbal ones need help. The bright colors and the music held their attention.

Includes an interview with Dr. Karen Kovacs North, UCLA Clinical Psychologist, talks with Mallory about Tools for Speech Development. They discuss that phonics and whole language combination are needed to both sound out letters and words as well as recognize words as a whole. For example, seeing a picture of a cat and being able to identify what a cat is. Dr North talks about how the video segments show the combination and with repetition, children are able to recognize objects and actions. Other topics include the importance of narration when walking down the street with your baby in a snuggly. For example, saying to your baby, "Look at the tree" in order to make the connection for the baby to connect the word "tree" to the object "tree."
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - More fun with Mallory and Giggles! In addition to new word learning with many more reinforcing segments, we learn colors associated with different objects like a blue shirt or a red car, with the color word on the screen for beginning letter recognition; and counting and one-to-one correspondence with live action animation of children sitting on a chair one a time to make a group of five children and five more children standing behind them to make a group of ten. Giggles lets kids know they did a good job too! Live action animations are shown in the moving/grooving segment where we see children drawing with crayons and painting with water colors. Giggles lets us know she loves to finger paint too! The Family Song album lets us know about all the relatives in your family – grandparents, parents, siblings and cousins. Overall, a great introduction for your baby and/or toddler.

SESAME BEGINNINGS: MOVING TOGETHER
SESAME WORKSHOP
Series: SHORT, AGES 0-2
Topic - Family
Description - Meant for parents to enjoy with their young children and explore all kinds of movement. When you laugh, sing, talk and move together, you build your child's self-esteem and eagerness to explore and learn. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - How can you not like this? Adorable puppets - based on familiar characters. Baby Muppets crawl, walk and run with amazing realism. Plus, they represent various ages, races and genders. Big Bird is taken care of by his Hawaiian grandmother; Baby Elmo and his Dad interact; Prairie Dawn plays with Mom. Encourages interaction between parent and child without which you wouldn't get the same affect. Music is catch - it suggests and encourages movement. There is a continuity of activities but is divided into sections suitable for a child's attention span.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Fantastic. They loved it. "The kids said it made them feel 'happy, happy, happy.'" One little boy said it made him feel proud. Another said he liked all Muppet babies. They easily identified Big Bird, Cookie Monster and Prairies Dawn and were absolutely delighted when Baby Elmo showed up. Kids danced along and sang along. Kids needed initial encouragement to participate but once they felt secure in the idea that they could move around the room without concern, they danced, jumped, flew and generally enjoyed the film. "I liked it! I want to do it too!" Two kids cried when it ended.

Description - Provides an opportunity for parents to interact with their babies by combining specific step-by-step exercises and guided professional instruction with entertaining visuals and sounds. Promotes proper physical development in babies.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - Excellent instructional DVD that gives step by step exercises and guided professional instruction for helping your baby who is zero to five-month-old. Clearly presented and illustrated with visuals such as live action segments between parent and baby, original drawings, puppets, marbles and colorful play objects. Designed for parent and caregiver to do with their baby, giving them the opportunity to nurture her natural development while bonding with their baby and encouraging them to move about in their first few months of life. Well done. Both male and female parents are shown. Background music is very respective but it's the only drawback. The professional instruction is outstanding.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - It is stressed in the introduction that this is not an attempt to produce "super babies," just to help parents learn good exercise techniques to use with children. The babies responded by reaching and smiling at the puppets and artwork. Some made sounds in response to it. Many made movements when they were shown the onscreen Daddy. This is really more for parents than for children.

Topic - Family
Description - Headed for an eco-adventure camping trip, high school students become stranded on a deserted island when their charter plane crashes. They think they won't be there for long, but they are wrong. The kids must learn to get along in order to survive.
KIDS FIRST!® Adult Jurors say - This is from the very well done series. It's enjoyable seeing how the kids become stronger through their own decisions. This episode follows the first volume when a group of kids get stranded on an island after a plane crash. It stands alone without the first volume and is entertaining, yet makes you want to watch the next volume. It addresses friendships and survival in a realistic and clean manner. Even when the kids blow their fuses, they do it in a manner no parent could get upset with. There is no inappropriate sexuality or profanity. The kids apologize to each other when they are wrong and represent several different races and both genders. They use their intellect and experience for their own survival such as when they build latrines to ward off illness, scavenge for protein so they won't eat only fruit. It is good, clean fun.
KIDS FIRST!® Kid Jurors say - Loved it. "Yes, I love it. It's my kind of movie. I love survival movies. I like all the teen issues and stuff that I can relate to." "My friends would like the funny situations like the stuff you normally would think about such as getting a rash." "The whole point of the movie is to figure out how to work together as a team in order to survive." "I learned how to climb palm tress, how to make a potty hole and how to get food to survive." Favorite part: getting the food and when the guy had a knife and was cutting the raft.
