Kids enjoyed the puppets but were unable to follow the idea behind the show. "I liked the puppets." "I liked when they finally found Van Gogh." They could not say what it was about. "The friends stayed together. They held hands." They liked the pictures and the characters. Kids liked the puppet characters and picked out which one they would like to be. They liked that the puppets walked.
Using the famous painting by Van Gogh, Starry Night, this video pulls together a cast of puppet characters and their human friends to address things such as beauty. It wanders a bit, talking about beauty and finding beautiful things, and searching to find Van Gogh so the little girl can sleep at night. It doesn't follow a linear storyline but is visually pleasing. We learn about ladies selling flowers, about people eating in cafes and the French countryside. The French accents of the adult actors are a bit exaggerated but it doesn't detract from the film. Children can relate to the problem of having difficulty going to sleep at night. The adults spoke of good values, such as the flower lady saying "you can find beauty all around you." The backgrounds of van Gogh's paintings are a plus. One misleading thing is that the film implies that Van Gogh wrote a book called, "The Starry Night" but it was written by another author.
Children's stuffed animals come alive in animated Van Gogh paintings in an adventure to overcome being scared to sleep at night. Children learn Van Gogh paintings, French words, composers, values and to sleep at night while enjoying a bedtime story.
