LIGHT OF FREEDOM, THE cover image
The most appealing thing about this title is that it takes place is during the Civil War which, in movies, has action and adventure. This movie has that. The acting lacks believability. Their emotions change too rapidly to ring true. It is a bit intense and mature, more suitable for older kids. Some younger kids may get scared or feel uncomfortable. The production values are good. The visual and audio clarity are good though the cinematography is shaky at times. I would have some reservations about showing it.
The Light of Freedom is a heartfelt film about the historical civil rights movement. The film centers around a family who risks their safety and ignores the current law in order to do what's right and help slaves escape to freedom, via the underground railroad. This film has likable characters with depth, great moral values, a strong plot, and high production quality. The set and costume design are impressive as well as the overall plot. Children would enjoy the variety of genres in the film, from mystery to action. It is a bit lengthy at two hours. But, there is a precise flow from start to finish and this film resolves every conflict and leaves no ends untied. It is easy to understand though the dialect of the period seems a bit over done. Some sarcasm breaks the historical accuracy but for the most part it seems factual. It has obvious Christian values and often quotes the Bible or has characters praying which might prove an obstacle for some venues.
It is the year 1861 and President Lincoln has called for 75,000 men to join the Union Army. As the Civil War begins, another battle has been raging for decades. It is the fight for freedom waged by the Underground Railroad.
