Peace by Peace: Women on the Frontlines. L. 56 min. S.
The current state of the world makes us wonder if peace is possible on
a global scale. Terrorists, extremists and dictators have led the human
race into wars and violence for centuries in the name of justice, religion
and revenge. In the past, soldiers were, more often than not, the casualties
of war, but in modern warfare, this is no longer true. Today ninety percent
of all war casualties are civilians, the majority of whom are women and
children. Yet in the midst of this ongoing horror, women around the world
are standing up for peace, advocating restorative justice and educating
future generations that violence is not the answer. Filmed in Afghanistan,
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burundi, Argentina and the US, this film celebrates
the unheralded work ofthese courageous women. Ages 13-18. From Peace by

Tibet’s Stolen Child. L.D. 60 min. F. (also a 14 min. version. S.)
This documentary by Robin Garthwait explores the Chinese government's
kid-napping of the boy named as the Panchen Lama for the Tibetan Buddhists.
Narrated by Patrick Stewart, it focuses on the fate of Gedhun Choekyi
Nyima, who was six-years-old when the Dalai Lama identified him as the
11th Panchen Lama. The Chinese government kid-napped the child and his
family and selected another child as their Pachen Lama of choice. Repeated
requests by international human rights organizations for access to the
child and his family have been ignored. Includes interviews with five
Nobel Peace Laureates: Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, Holocaust
survivor and historian Elie Wiesel, Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor, John
Hume and Mairead Maguire of Northern Ireland, and the Dalai Lama of Tibet.
In focusing on the suppression of religious freedom in Tibet and the egregious
abduction of a child designated to become a religious leader, "Tibet's
Stolen Child" shows that the betrayal of human rights against one
people is a blot against civilization as a whole. Ages 12 - 15. Garthwait

Astonishingly, nearly 4 million stray or feral cats inhabit the streets,
parks, back alleys and backyards of Los Angeles County, and they are reproducing
at an alarming rate. The current solution is round-up and kill. But is
there a better way? Urban Rescuers profiles a group of fiercely dedicated
animal welfare crusaders in Los Angeles who rescue feral cats from the
certain death they face upon landing in animal shelters. The methodology
involves a controversial solution for feral cats known as “TNR”
(trap, neuter, return), which calls for sterilizing these animals and
then allowing them to live out their lives in the wild. Ages 12-18. Planetworks
