Coalition for Quality Children's Media (CQCM) / KIDS FIRST!
Mission

The Coalition for Quality Children's Media is a national, nonprofit organization founded in 1991 whose
mission is to teach children critical viewing skills and to increase the visibility and availability of quality
children's media. The Coalition is a voluntary collaboration comprising more than 10,000 media
professionals, lobbyists, policymakers, child advocates, educators, parents and families nationwide.
KIDS FIRST! is a project of the Coalition.

Objectives

  • To teach children to become critical media users;
  • To help adults recognize the importance of teaching critical viewing skills to children;
  • To help children identify and be aware of outstanding media programming;
  • To develop programs for children with special needs such as low-income, hospitalized or at-risk
    children.
Prior to Joining the Online Training Group

  • Fill out an online application form and pay the appropriate fee (you will be contacted with
    instructions).
  • Review this training manual which addresses both the Adult Evaluation process and the children's jury. You may or not not have a children's jury. That is up to you.
  • If you have any questions about what you read, please email them to us here.
  • Once you complete reading this manual, you will be asked to send us a sample evaluation of any film rated PG-13. You will select the film. It may be something you have a DVD of in your own library, something you find on Netflix, Amazon, or another online site or something you have watched at the theater. We do not provide the film for this screening.
Training Goals

  • Learn how to evaluate and critique films, TV series, DVDs, audio CDs and videogames using a
    set of criteria specifically designed for KIDS FIRST!
  • Learn how to facilitate a jury of children to evaluate and critique media and to help them
    become critical media viewers.
