Just because you watch “CSI” doesn’t mean your six-year-old (no matter how brilliant and mature) should, too. As a parent, you instinctively know stuff like that. Unfortunately, broadcasters don’t get it.
Although a mountain of research warns that television violence can be emotionally harmful to kids, violence on primetime TV has increased a whopping 75 percent since 1998. That’s scary.
So what can you do about it? Here’s where the Smart Television Alliance comes in. We're a new coalition of leading nonprofit organizations committed to helping you use technology to find and watch quality television programming -- on your family's own schedule. (No, really. It's possible.)

Center for Media Literacy
Founded in 1989, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization providing leadership,
training and consulting based on the CML MediaLit Kit, "A Framework for
Learning and Teaching in a Media World." Their website is a virtual encyclopedia
of media literacy information and resources including: CML Online Catalog of
Teaching Resources.
Dr. Toy
provides children, parents, teachers, grandparents and other adults with important
year-round information about the Dr. Toy award winning products. These include
toys, dolls, games, puzzles, books, software, CD-ROMs, audio and video discs
and tapes, creative materials, construction toys, and much more.
The
National Association for Family and Community Education has been a strong voice
in promoting a healthier and better life for individuals, families, and communities.
Assembling in Washington, D.C. in 1936, a determined group of rural farm women
had a vision, "to strengthen adult education, to share
their good sense and experience for improvement of home and community life,
and to initiate and promote projects of national importance for the protection
of the American family." Early efforts focused on support for a national
school lunch program, development of local public health services, immunization
programs for children, implementation of the first bookmobiles, and national
safety programs. From the 1930's and into the 2000's FCE's mission to strengthen
families through continuing education, leadership development, and community
action has remained the same. Leadership through education is the key; volunteerism
is the means. FCE's mission - past, present and future - connects with the
needs of families.
The Coalition for Independent Ratings Services seeks to raise awareness of the tremendous resource Independent Ratings Systems offer to all those who want to make informed decisions about media content.
The Coalition brings together organizations that offer independent ratings and those who seek more effective tools and resources for navigating the wide range of media content available through television, movies, video games, music and the Internet.
