QUOTE OF THE MONTH
There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all-time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost. - Martha Graham

Welcome to KIDS FIRST!® NEWS. All articles are by Coalition for Quality Children's Media unless otherwise noted.

Dear Friends,

In addition to the excitement of the holidays, we have been very busy in our household reviewing many terrific titles from you producers. I am constantly in awe of your talent. From my family to you and yours, happy holidays! I hope you get a chance to sit back and relax a bit this season and focus on the positive things life has to offer.

As always, I welcome your input. If you have comments on titles we have endorsed; notices of media awards, publications, and products; or suggestions for articles, please drop me a line.

Christine Pollock, Editor

Dear Friends,

As I look back on this wonderful year my thoughts review all the incredible experiences that have come my, and KIDS FIRST! way. My thanks go out to all the great people whose support make this organization function -- to our sponsors, our members, our readers and website visitors, our jurors, our board, and of course our staff - both in-house and remote. You really are the Best! Merci, gracias, thanks!!

I just returned from a trip east for which my son and our webmaster, Sam, joined me. It was the first time that we've traveled together since he lived in Italy almost fifteen years ago. As our kids become adults and then parents, spending time alone with them becomes such a precious commodity. Sam's professional cooking experience led us on a culinary tour of Washington DC and New York City where I attended meetings during the day, and he explored nooks and crannies of both cities. We met up with my daughter and Sam's sister, Alanna who lives and works in New York, as well as a host of other good friends. What a wonderful way to start the holiday season, being with my two grown children and having time to have more than a fleeting conversation.

My wish for your during this holiday season is that you'll find time to slow down and enjoy being with the people you love. I think you'll find some interesting and fun things in this newsletter, from excellent featured titles from our webstore to the "film therapy" article which Chris and I collaborated on.

Best to you for the holidays.

Love,

Ranny Levy
Founder and President, KIDS FIRST!®

Choose Your Own Adventure: The Abominable Snowman. The first DVD in the Choose Your Own Adventure series, The Abominable Snowman follows three siblings on a quest to rescue their uncle in the Himalayan region of Nepal. The DVD prompts the child on-screen every 3-7 minutes to make choices about which path to follow. Adult Jurors: An exciting program that places decisions in the hands of the viewer. It can be watched over and over because the outcome changes. Well produced. Good animation. Respectful behavior. Appropriate for this age group. Adult jurors remembered the Choose Your Own Adventure books from their own childhood. One said, "They were probably the only books I ever reread. I loved them." Kids' Review: Loved that you could make your own choices about what to do and that it changed the outcome."The way you get to choose what happens next is cool. And, it's a pretty funny movie that kids will like." Definitely repeatable."I would love to watch it again and make different choices just to see what happened." DVD. L. 65 min. ; $11.19; Age: 6-12. Lean Forward Media.

The Night Before Christmas and More Christmas Stories. Clement Clark Moore's timeless tale, told by Anthony Edwards, is at the heart of this collection of holiday stories. Also includes "Max's Christmas" and "Morris's Disappearing Bag" by Rosemary Wells and "Owl Moon" by Caldecott Medalist author Jane Yolen. Adult Juror Comments: Wonderful anthology of warmhearted holiday favorites, each with a family theme. Narrated by popular actors. Simple and easy to understand for young children. Vocabulary is age-appropriate. Easily viewed in segments. Kid Juror Comments: Children enjoyed having stories they recognized read to them."They had a nice family and Max is really cute." "I want to see them disappear again." Children talked about what it would be like to see Santa Claus, or to have a "disappearing bag." DVD 27 min. ; $9.95; Ages 3-8. New Video Group, Inc.

Pegasus the Flying Horse and Beauty and the Beast
Pegasus follows the mythological horse from birth to his battle with the multi-headed Chimaera. He is appointed by Zeus as thunder-bearer and is transformed into the constellation. Narrated by Mia Farrow. Adapted by Doris Orgel. Beauty and the Beast is based on the classic tale. To save her beloved father, a beautiful young girl agrees to become the companion of a brutish and unhappy beast. As time passes, love works a miraculous change in their lives. Narrated by MIA Farrow.
Adult Jurors: Both these tales are beautifully animated and excellent translations of the original classic tales. Pegasus provides an engaging introduction to mythology. The ending of Beauty more accurately reflects the original story than some major studio releases. Kids' Review: After watching Pegasus, the kids were really jazzed about mythology. Many were familiar with the story of Pegasus and enjoyed watching it. It stimulated a search in the library afterwards for more myths. With Beauty, the kids noticed the difference between this version and the Disney version which they were familiar with. They noticed that the characters' mouths didn't move, which generated a discussion about how stories can be told in different ways. They did comment on the illustrations and how beautiful they were. DVD. L. 60 mins. $9.95. Ages 4-12. Lightyear Entertainment.

The Snow Queen and the Wild Swans
Two classic folktales by Hans Christian Anderson, both narrated by Sigourney Weaver. Snow Queen is a powerful tale that follows a young girl's quest to rescue her playmate from the icy palace of the Snow Queen. Music by Jason Miles. The Wild Swans tells the story of when Princess Elise is exiled, and her brothers are transformed into wild swans by the envious Queen. Elise sets out to find and release her brothers and finds not only must perform a seemingly impossible task but not speak a word the entire time. Music by Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian (Hooters). DVD. L. 30 mins. $9.95. Lightyear Entertainment.
Adult Jurors: Beautifully animated with wonderful character voices and lovely music. Excellent role models. The characters express many emotions that children can relate to, such as caring enough for another to put oneself out for them. Kids' Review: Absorbing. Kids enjoyed the characters' adventures, responded to the story and loved the ending, which reunites the friends. They wanted to watch it again.

The Snowy Day, and Other Jack Keats Stories
One of Ranny's Picks: One winter morning Peter wakes up to see that snow has fallen, covering everything in the city. His exciting adventures come to life in this adaptation of the perennial children's classic and Caldecott medal winner. Adult Jurors: Wonderful. Gentle storytelling, delightful music and art. Muted, beautiful animation with acoustic guitar. Methodically slow pace. Rare glimpses of a child alone, engaging in imaginative play, allow children to project their own experiences and stories. Kids' Review: Most were excited to see small stories from their own lives."I loved it." "Peter was too big to sit in the chair, and he gave it to the baby." "I have a baby sister now." Some tried to whistle along as Peter struggled to learn how to whistle for his dog. DVD. L. 53 mins. $9.95. Ages 2-5. New Video Group, Inc.

Wai Lana's Little Yogis, Vol. 1
Introduces the whole family to yoga. Kids stretch and strengthen their growing bodies, sharpen their minds and improve their balance and coordination. These are healthy habits with life long benefits. Adult Jurors: Very imaginative, relaxing, and fun! Addresses breathing and physiology. Well organized, flows well. Short segments good for this age. Adults enjoyed participating as well. Narrator's voice annoyed some. Simple production. Beautiful Hawaiian setting. Kids' Review: Fun."I like to exercise. It's good for your body." "I liked the animal stretches; the beetle & butterfly were my favorites." "I like the songs, especially the snake one." "It's a little slow." DVD. L. 30 mins. $9.95. Ages 5-8. Wai Lana Productions.

* = Titles that meet the baseline criteria but require some extra consideration on the part of the viewer receive a one-star rating.

Video/DVD-Ages 3-7

** Thingamakid Toddler Toons. Colorful and delightful cartoon characters bring to life this collection of classic kid songs. Dance and sing along to "Wheels on the Bus," "The Eensy Weensy Spider" and more. The DVD comes with karaoke, educational shorts and a 15-song CD. Adult Juror Comments: Uses cute animated characters to reinforce concepts most children ages 2-5 already have been exposed to such as nursery rhymes, colors, shapes, ABCs and counting. The menu options are a plus because they allow you to select exactly which song you want to play. Good length. Holds child's attention without much redirection from an adult. It's great that a CD is included with just the songs. Makes it perfect for the car or listening anywhere. Kid Juror Comments: Kids liked the songs. Said it was "fun and not too long." "I knew all the songs because my mother sings them to me." "I like to sing and dance and this movie made me do both." Ages 3-7. Thingamakid.

Video/DVD-Ages 6-10

* Poetry, Verse and Rhyme, Oh My! Children will learn about the wonders of our world through this work, once seen on PBS, of celebrated poets such as Rudyard Kipling, Edward Lear and Robert Louis Stevenson. Adult Juror Comments: Interesting twist on classical poetry. Mother Goose was more engaging than the animal portion. Clever, silly excerpts assembled in a nonsensical fashion that appealed to the adults more than kids. The actors are clear and expressive; it's almost as if they're having a conversation. Lacks diversity; all actors are Caucasian. Kid Juror Comments: Mixed responses. Some said, "It's ok but too slow and too much talking." They liked the part with the swings and the sandbox, commented that all the actors were white, and liked the penguin. Some said they would watch it again because of the animals. It didn't hold their attention. Ages 6-10. Monterey Media.

Video/DVD-Ages 5-12

** Lemons 2 Lemonade: How to Handle Life When Things Go Sour Between Mom & Dad. Introduces children to key concepts and positive messages that kids most need to hear when divorce happens in family. It provides children with the tools they need to handle everyday issues, as well as difficult divorce situations. Parents and children will learn together that families are forever. Adult Juror Comments: Excellent information for children dealing with divorce. Shows the wide range of feelings kids experience when parents divorce; emphasizes that all these feelings are normal. Deals with common questions such as feeling guilty about causing the breakup. Good examples and anecdotes. Audio a little fuzzy; language appropriate. Emphasizes the idea that "divorce is never a kid's fault." Gives excellent advice and explains situations in very clear ways. Kid Juror Comments: Definitely, the audience is children who are dealing with divorce."This is a good movie if your parents are getting a divorce. It tells you how to handle your feelings." "The kids on-screen were just my age. They acted the way that I do sometimes." "I liked that it was outside." "The song was catchy." "My friends going through divorce act just like that." "I had some of the same feelings when my Dad moved out. It was good to see that I'm not the only kid who feels sad about divorce." Ages 5-12. Stay at Home and Learn Productions.

Ranny's Therapeutic Film Suggestions by Christine L. Pollock

Cookies. Shopping. Church program. School concert. Party…My to-do list goes on, and I bet your list is just as frenetic mine. Sometimes in the midst of the chaos, it is important to set aside a quiet evening to have some family time -- without a lot of hoopla. Or maybe the holidays have brought up some important issues that you need to discuss with your children, but don't know where to start. For this article, our very own Ranny Levy, has recommended some terrific titles:

Akeelah and the Bee - This inspirational title encourages you to believe in yourself and stick with it even when things are looking dismal. Akeelah's aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and, in turn, unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl.

Blue's Room: Meet Blue's Baby Brother. - Do you have new sibling in the house? So does Blue, but she isn't sure who he is. She and Joe skidoo off to Puppyville to find him.

Cyberchase: Designing Mr. Perfect - Can you design a Mr. Perfect? The kids must design an invention that can both get them across a perilous swamp and up a tall cliff in order to rescue Digit, who's been turned into Wicked's "Mr. Perfect" - and kidnapped by Hacker!

Emmanuel's Gift - Filled with tenacity and courage and narrated by Oprah Winfrey, this film chronicles the life of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, who preaches a vital message: people with disabilities are valuable contributors to any society.

Get Fit! Elementary Kids! - Let's stop obesity when kids are young. Get them moving and in tune with their bodies through this collection of fun-filled DVDs.

An Inconvenient Truth - A great conversation starter for older children regarding global consciousness, An Inconvenient Truth is not a story of despair, but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share.

Flicka - How do adults and teens relate? In this contemporary motion picture adaptation of Mary O'Hara's beloved novel My Friend Flicka, 16-year-old Katy McLaughlin (Alison Lohman) dreams of fulfilling her family legacy by working on her father's ranch in modern-day Wyoming. But Katy's father wants more for her, insisting that Katy go to college.

OrganWise Guys - The entire OrganWise series is filled with good nutrition, physical activity, and other lifestyle behavior messages to people of all ages -- perfect for the holidays.

Lemons 2 Lemonade: How to Handle Life When Things Go Sour between Mom & Dad - Holidays are an especially tough time when your family is splitting. This film introduces children to key concepts and positive messages that kids most need to hear when divorce happens in family. It provides children with the tools they need to handle everyday issues, as well as, difficult divorce situations. Parents and children will learn together that families are forever.
