Coalition for Quality Children's Media (CQCM) / KIDS FIRST!

The Coalition for Quality Children's Media is a national, nonprofit organization founded in 1991 whose
mission is to teach children critical viewing skills and to increase the visibility and availability of quality
children's media. The Coalition is a voluntary collaboration comprising more than 10,000 media
professionals, lobbyists, policymakers, child advocates, educators, parents and families nationwide.
KIDS FIRST! is a project of the Coalition.

  • To teach children to become critical media users;
  • To help adults recognize the importance of teaching critical viewing skills to children;
  • To help children identify and be aware of outstanding media programming;
  • To develop programs for children with special needs such as low-income, hospitalized or at-risk
Prior to Joining the Online Training Group

  • Fill out an online application form and pay the appropriate fee (currently suspended).
  • Review this training manual which covers both the Adult Evaluation process and the children's jury process. You may or may not have a children's jury.
  • Prepare some questions in advance and email them to us by clicking here.
  • You will receive an email with instructions to login to the training. Once you have logged on
    and have joined us by phone or headset, you will receive further instructions on how the
    program works prior to the start of the course. It is important that you login on time, so that you
    will not miss any of these instructions or any of the course time.
  • You will receive follow-up instructions for the second portion of the training by email.

Please remember to save the email instructions for joining the phone meeting. You will need the
information in order to join the group. Each meeting has a unique phone number and code.

Training Goals


  • Learn how to evaluate and critique films, TV series, DVDs, audio CDs and videogames using a
    set of criteria specifically designed for KIDS FIRST!
  • Learn how to facilitate a jury of children to evaluate and critique media and to help them
    become critical media viewers.
