Instead of simply looking at the technical aspects of\nsound editing and sound design,&nbsp;<em>Making\nWaves: The Art of Cinematic Sound&nbsp;<\/em>makes a relatable\ndocumentary by looking at the people who simply wish to discuss their deep\npassion for the art of sound. Some particularly fascinating references include the wholly\norganic sound design of every creature, explosion and spaceship in&nbsp;<em>Star Wars<\/em>&nbsp;(1977) and the quiet\nartful water-splashing in&nbsp;<em>Roma<\/em>&nbsp;(2018).\nNot only that, but the documentary also discusses the many branches of\ncinematic sound. From dialogue editing to SFX and even ambiance (sounds of the\nenvironment), each department of the soundscape of cinema gets covered in this\ndocumentary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c2kL495Ftzc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite part of the film lies towards the\nend and features Ben Burtt, a sound designer who has worked on several&nbsp;<em>Star Wars<\/em>&nbsp;films,&nbsp;<em>Indiana Jones<\/em>&nbsp;films,&nbsp;<em>Wall-E,<\/em> and much more, garnering him two\nAcademy Awards. Yet, despite his many achievements, his discussion about his\nlife makes his interview so unforgettable. Burtt discusses how after winning an\nOscar for his first project,&nbsp;<em>Star\nWars: A New Hope<\/em>, he felt massive pressure to maintain that success\nin future projects. Not only that, he discusses his challenges in separating\nfrom work and returning home every day for dinner. This segment gives an\nintimate hidden look at the intimate challenge many artists in the film world\nface: disconnecting from their craft. Watching a film after this documentary\nfeels distinctly different because the secret subtlety of the many brilliant\naspects of sound design now become clear. After watching this documentary, one\ncan begin to understand the impressive complexity that sound artists go to in\ndeveloping a world in a film, on the subconscious level. Not only that, the\ndocumentary presents ideas in a very visual way. Even technical concepts such\nas the difference between mono, stereo, four-point and modern Dolby 5.1 surround\nsound can easily be understood by hearing it in auditory examples, but also in\nvisually showing how the different systems operate.
