{"id":381,"date":"2010-07-12T16:46:57","date_gmt":"2010-07-12T22:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kidsfirst.org\/ranny\/2010\/07\/12\/the-karate-kid-for-kids-of-all-ages\/"},"modified":"2010-08-13T16:26:14","modified_gmt":"2010-08-13T22:26:14","slug":"the-karate-kid-for-kids-of-all-ages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidsfirst.org\/ranny\/2010\/the-karate-kid-for-kids-of-all-ages\/","title":{"rendered":"The Karate Kid:  For Kids of All Ages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Karate Kid 2\" align=\"left\" alt=\"Karate Kid 2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kidsfirst.org\/images\/Blog\/KarateKid2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The best part of <em>The Karate Kid<\/em>, according to KIDS FIRST! jurors, Margie and Joseph Sarrao (9), was all the Kung Fu, especially when Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) fought with a broken leg.\u00a0 Indeed, there is a lot of Kung Fu action in this movie, a fact that is sure to please kids of all ages.\u00a0 It is, however, also a story of friendship, redemption, getting up when you are knocked down, learning to live in a foreign culture, and good sporstmanship.\u00a0 Oh, yeah, it is also a story about bullying \u2013 a concept many American kids understand.<br \/>\n<font size=\"3\">\u00a0<\/font><\/p>\n<p>In <em>Karate Kid<\/em>, Dre befriends Meiying (Wanwan Han), a girl at his school, but unwittingly dishonors her family.\u00a0 Viewers will think it\u2019s funny to watch <em>Sponge Bob<\/em> in Chinese, but Dre is learning to navigate in a culture very different from ours &#8211; from eating different foods to watching \u201cSponge Bob\u201d in Chinese, to the Chinese idea of honor.<\/p>\n<p>Good sportsmanship and bullying are also central themes in this movie.\u00a0 Dre makes an enemy of the school bully.\u00a0\u00a0 At one point, they beat Dre up 5 against 1!\u00a0 They are definitely not good sports. They are willing to do anything to win, even cheat.\u00a0 But Dre doesn\u2019t handle this situation well, either.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t tell any adults about the bullying.\u00a0 Both his mom (Taraji P. Henson) and his school\u2019s headmistress would help him if they knew.\u00a0 This is a good lesson for real life.<\/p>\n<p>As a \u201cchild of the 80\u2019s,\u201d when the first <em>Karate Kid<\/em> was made, I was hesitant to watch this remake.\u00a0 But I really enjoyed it!\u00a0 It is very well made.
