{"id":612,"date":"2013-05-07T15:38:42","date_gmt":"2013-05-07T21:38:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kidsfirst.org\/ranny\/2013\/05\/07\/marvel%e2%80%99s-iron-man-3-inventor-and-innovator-fair-announces-finalists\/"},"modified":"2013-05-07T15:38:42","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T21:38:42","slug":"marvel%e2%80%99s-iron-man-3-inventor-and-innovator-fair-announces-finalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidsfirst.org\/ranny\/2013\/marvel%e2%80%99s-iron-man-3-inventor-and-innovator-fair-announces-finalists\/","title":{"rendered":"Marvel\u2019s IRON MAN 3:  INVENTOR and INNOVATOR FAIR ANNOUNCES FINALISTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Disney announced the 12 finalists in the Marvel\u2019s IRON MAN 3: Inventor and InnovatOR Fair, a nationwide science competition held in conjunction with the release of \u201cIron Man 3\u201d, sponsored by Discovery Science Center, Broadcom Foundation and Marvel Studios, along with Visa Signature and the famous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood., On the evening of May 3rd, at the 4:30pm screening of Marvel\u2019s \u201cIron Man 3,\u201d Grand Prize winners will receive their awards in a special ceremony onstage at the El Capitan Theatre, hosted by Asa Kalama,\u00a0 a Walt Disney Imagineer. All 12 Inventor and InnovatOR Fair finalists will have their projects on display at the El Capitan from May 3rd \u2013 June 19th.<\/p>\n<p>Like Iron Man\u2019s alter ego, Tony Stark, these young geniuses are discovering and creating the world for tomorrow.\u00a0 And getting to be a finalist hasn\u2019t been easy.\u00a0 Sixth through ninth-grade girls and boys across the nation were invited to participate in MARVEL\u2019S IRON MAN 3: INVENTOR and INNOVATOR FAIR and asked to produce innovative, inventive projects based on STEM themes from \u201cIron Man 3\u201d \u2014 STEM: (science, technology, engineering and math).\u00a0\u00a0 The competition encouraged students to submit projects that aligned with the National Academy of Engineering\u2019s (NAE) Grand Challenges for Engineering\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, after judges reviewed over 300 science projects from all over the country, 30 semi-finalists were chosen. Helmets and Concussions\u201d<br \/>\nMaya Patel, The Woodlands, Texas \u2013 \u201cGauging Inferno Sprawl\u201d<br \/>\nMegan Swintosky, Hatfield, Pa. \u2013 \u201cNovel Mutations in the FLCN Gene in Cases of Familial Spontaneous Pneumothoraces\u201d<br \/>\nShixuan Justin Li, Lynn Haven, Fla. \u2013 \u201cNo Mo Squites\u201d<br \/>\nStephen Coyne, Knoxville, Md. \u2013 \u201cRobotic Prosthetics: A Hand Prototype\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grand Prize judges for the Marvel\u2019s IRON MAN 3: Inventor and InnovatOR Fair will be Dr. Henry Samueli, Chairman of the Board, Broadcom Corporation; Joe Adams, President, Discovery Science Center; Janet Yamaguchi, Vice President of Education, Discovery Science Center; Dr. Yannis Yortsos, Dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California; and Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, Chairman and CEO, NantWorks, LLC.<\/p>\n<p>The 12 finalists of the Marvel\u2019s IRON MAN 3: Inventor and InnovatOR Fair won a trip to Southern California, provided by Visa Signature.
