Very compelling, even from the beginning as we watch the kids leave their old lives and change into clothes from the period. This doc tells an extraordinary story about these city kids who had to survive like the early pioneers did in the 1800s. Watching this is very compelling. It's interesting to see a total abandonment of the digital society and submergence into a fully independent lifestyle. Watching the hardships these kids have to face and imagining yourself doing this really conjures up serious thoughts. It points out how much we have grown to rely on quick fixes and how different our life would be without them. Wonderful overall structure and style. The documentary is divided into chapters and incorporates issues such as trading with townspeople, Indians and other travelers. It shows the lifestyle and the kids' journey rather than telling about it. It offers great history lessons that one doesn't get from being lectured to or reading about. Very good production quality.
In the mid-1800s, pioneers crossed America's western frontier in pursuit of a better life. In doing so, they grew the nation and united the states of America. In its efforts to preserve the historic trails, the Oregon-California Trails Association sponsored a trip to connect 24 students to events that shaped the nation. Along with three exceptional teachers, they set off on a journey both historic and personal. They thought they'd be learning about history. They wound up learning about themselves.
