This is a sad movie. It made us sad in a lot of places because of what Moon had to live like. He was dirty and hungry and didn't have a mom or dad to take good care of him. He had to hide from people. Then he got caught and had to be in that place like jail but he got away and then was scared again. He did find some friends and that was good. The best was at the end when he went to live with his uncle and his family. It had a happy ending!
Moon and his dad live a very different life in the woods. Moon has little contact with others, but when his dad dies, he is forced to reach out in order to survive. Through a series of events, he eventually is helped by a kind gentleman who helps his family find him and care for him. Issues of trust - both from Moon and his dad - are prevalent in this movie. The title brings many topics to discussion and would be great to help children learn about how people live differently than what we normally expect. Viewers will definitely want to ask questions about Moon's life - why he and his dad are living in the woods, how his dad died, why Moon had to bury his own dad, etc. Throughout the movie, viewers can see how Moon's life has consequences that happen because of his lifestyle and the questions of how he will survive are answered by a kind gentleman and Moon's own family. Some jurors were "put off" by the burial scene at the beginning of the film, where Moon buries his father, and didn't recommend this for younger viewers.
After the unexpected death of his survivalist father, an eleven year old boy raised in the Alabama wilderness must learn how to make a home in the modern world. Based on the children's novel, Alabama Moon is a classic adventure tale.
