VEGGIE TALES: TOMATO SAWYER AND HUCKLEBARRY LARRY
''We liked this video because it tells us about how to help people and how not helping people is hurting them.'' The children also liked the silly song about a biscuit. The children like the story and they really like the characters Tom and Huck. They thought it was great when Little Jimmy found his Mama and the real bad guy got caught. ''I think my friends would like this video because there is a raft ride, an amusement park and nice people in the story.'' ''Huck made me think about what was right and wrong and how I want to be treated. We should help people if we can. ''All of the children wanted to know what was ok behavior, like what was right and what was wrong. They all wanted to know about taking a raft trip sometime when it warms up. This video asks children to think about what is right and what is wrong, and asks them to help people if they can. The language and content is always appropriate and there is no condescension, or malicious behavior.
Veggie Tales does not disappoint. When this series first came out, I thought it was preposterous to have characters played by vegetables, albeit animated. But, they started out strong and have only improved with time. Taking classic stories such as Tom Sawyer, they've put a twist on these stories that teach history and values while maintaining a humorous aspect that both kids and adults enjoy. This one, in particular makes a lot of references to pop culture throughout the show. Biblical verses are incorporated into these stories but are not heavy handed. Through song and story, the story addresses life along the Mississippi and focuses on the character, Big Jim who is being punished for a crime he didn't commit. It addresses the formation of the Homesteading Act with Tomato Sawyer and Huckleberry Larry just days away from earning the land they've homesteaded. It delivers a strong message to help others.
