Myrtle Over the Moon has a lot going for and a few things going against it, as you can see from our review below. As much as we loved parts of it, other things stuck out enough that we don't feel it is right for KIDS FIRST! We certainly wish you the best in finding your audience. This thirty minute short is targeted for very young kids and is full of goofy gags and silly behavior by Kenny and Paige Turner, as they set the stage to tell a story about Myrtle Over the Moon. I admired Myrtle, a young actress who plays the role of a cow that tries to jump over the moon to get a million "likes" on YouTube. Some skeptical girlfriends make fun of her, in song and dance, but she perseveres. Only her pig friend gives her the support she needs to figure out how she is going to be famous for becoming the "cow that jumped over the moon!"' (You remember the nursery rhyme, don't you?) The production design is two dimensional stage craft with green screen backgrounds for the time machines. There are musical moments with child actors wearing animal costumes who sing and dance in front of the drawn barn. The character arc for Myrtle has a beginning, middle and an end with a moral to the story. This is good storytelling directed at a younger audience. Much of the music is original, which impressed me. However, the pace of the story development is a deterrent. Watching adults overact for children is only fun in small doses and this has a heap load of adult overacting. The script has the younger, Caucasian actors as skeptics and putting down Myrtle the cow, which is played by an actor of color. These may be subtleties, but in today's world they stick out in a negative way. I wonder if the casting team made these choices without thinking about this. Myrtle is certainly a talented singer and actor. The message of this film is to appreciate the friends that you have and realize you don't have to have a million "likes" by strangers to feel good about yourself. Also, it's a reminder to not give up on your dreams just because others think you are crazy to try to reach so high. I give Myrtle Over the Moon 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 4 to 10.
