The storyline follows two girls who are friends and have a dream of participating in a soapbox car race in Brazil called "Carrinho de Rolimã." At first, they are rejected by a man, due to them being girls. But, super fearless, they prove that with grit and determination, they can overcome obstacles.
This film shows a lot of Brazilian culture and I like how the girls' behavior encourages others to stand up for themselves. The plot is highly developed, especially in terms of the girls who, throughout the film, demonstrate their strength. For example, in one scene where they are competing in a race, the boys say something offensive to the women and the women, in turn, overcome it with strength, showing that they are not weak. The video quality is excellent, truly admirable. The shots are all well framed and lit; plus the audio recording is excellent. The characters are very intriguing, especially the lead characters and the young actors that play them. Also, the performance of one of the boys in the competition captured my attention. He worked so well with the girls in that scene, I felt his emotion and was angry at his character. The exact location of the film is not mentioned, however, it appears to be a city in the interior of Brazil, where this roller coaster game is a tradition. As to costumes, mostly they wear clothes typical of what people wear today; however, the outfit the girls wear when they arrive at the face is outstanding and makes everyone cheer at their arrival. The music stands out, especially in the final scene, when the girls win the championship and an empowering song is sung by a woman singer. I love the scene at the beginning, when the kids are playing ball and the ball falls on the other side of the wall, and the boys can't catch it so the girls call the boys chicken. But the girls persevere and climb over the wall to retrieve the ball. My favorite scene has to be when the girls win the race and everyone shouts, "Girls! Girls! Girls!" That is a true example of girl power.
The film's message is to not believe in people who want to destroy you, and always be honest and strong. Note that there is some mild profanity.
I give Soapbox Car - A High-Speed Adventure 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 12. By Anna Clara B., KIDS FIRST!
