This documentary is from Taiwan with dialogue in Chinese and English subtitles. It follows a children's ecology program that combines native language learning, youth engagement, and science education. Three children accompany a wilderness guide as they locate and observe small creatures, from legless to multi-legged critters. They learn ecological concepts and discover how many traditional observations of nature are preserved in the rich Taigi names for plants and animals.
The guide, Chun-Ting Chou, is truly extraordinary and knowledgeable. He relates so well to the children, who are genuinely interested in exploring their natural surroundings with him. This is very well produced with terrific camera work, audio recording and editing. It would fit very well into a classroom situation. The only drawback for our English speaking audiences is that the dialogue is entirely in Chinese with English subtitles, so younger audiences would find it difficult to follow along, but older kids, 8 to 12, would not have that issue.
I give Nature Bug Patrol 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 8 to 12, plus adults. By Julie S, KIDS FIRST!
