Rio Reviewed by KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Anthony Aranda

Rio.jpg“This is a great movie that has a great storyline. The movie is about a blue macaw who is the last male of his kind. He travels with his owner Linda to Rio where the last female blue macaw lives. Some of the main characters in the movie are Blu, Jewel, and Rafael. Rafael is a toucan played by George Lopez.

One of the best lines in the movie is when Blu is trying to fly and Rafael, played by George Lopez, says, “Alright Blu, you’re flying! Sort of. Not really.” That is so funny. George Lopez has also played in another movie that I really loved called Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2. He always knows how to get the audience laughing.

My favorite part of the movie is when Blu’s owner Linda is waking up in the morning and is trying to turn her alarm off. When she thinks she has it off, all of a sudden she hears more loud noises and it turns out to be Blu!

Every movie has to have a bad guy and this movie is no exception. There are poachers that steal lots of different kinds of birds as well as their mean pet cockatoo Nigel who causes a lot of trouble throughout the movie. He also enlists the help of a group of monkeys that turn out to be no help to him at all. Another great part of the movie is when the birds and monkeys fight! It was a great action scene and of course the birds won.

I would recommend this movie for all ages because it’s such a good movie. There aren’t really any scary parts and I think all ages would like it. Go out and see it in theaters when it

Barbie: A Fairy Secret – A Wonderful Adventure for Barbie Fans

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

BarbieFairySecret.jpgBarbie: A Fairy Secret” is the story of how Barbie discovers that fairies really do exist. Here is a review from our 9-year-old film critic, Makai Weber Colvin. See her video review here. Or, read below:

When a fairy princess captures her boyfriend Ken, Barbie along with her costar, Raquelle, and two of Barbie’s stylists, head out to rescue him from Gloss Angeles, a floating town filled with fairies.
I really like the animation in this movie, especially how each of the characters are drawn. Barbie’s eyes glisten like jewels and get me into the fairy mood. Each scene bursts with color, like their hangout – Wally’s.

I also love how every piece of clothing has a modern twist. I wish I could have two fairies as my personal stylists. The movie also has great music that makes me want to dance.
Barbie is already friends with her two fashion stylists at the beginning of the movie, but is uneasy around her rival Raquelle. Raquelle is jealous of Barbie, so what will happen when they get twisted up in this magical world together?

MakaiCcolvin.jpgWhen Ken is forced to marry fairy princess Graziella he realizes how much he loves Barbie but lots of trouble stands in their way. Don’t worry, because Barbie will do anything to get Ken back.
Girls ages two to ten will really enjoy this movie filled with friends, fashion and adventure. Will Raquelle and Barbie ever be friends? How will they get into the magical world? Will they rescue Ken? Find out when you watch “Barbie: a Fairy Secret.” Credit: Makai Weber Colvin, Age 9, KIDS FIRST! Film Critic

The Roommate Reviewed by KIDS FIRST! Film Critic Raven Devanney

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Roommate.jpgThe Roommate is the story of a crazy chick who doesn’t take her meds and wants to be her college roommate’s only friend.

This movie was scary but it wasn’t very good. It was supposed to be a thriller but it wasn’t very suspenseful and it wasn’t scary enough to be horror. I think the rating PG-13 was good because there wasn’t really any language or sexual content and the horror level was low. The only part that was sooo horrible it made me cry was when the crazy lady put the cutest little kitten in the washing machine.

It really bugged me when Rebecca, the crazy person, beat herself up. It was kind of scary and gross and made me sick when she broke her own face!! It was, like I said, not very good.
I had a fun time seeing it with my friends, but I wouldn’t watch it again. Wait ‘til its out on DVD.
I think this movie would be good for a sleepover with friends because it is a good RavenAM.jpgmovie to socialize in if you don’t have to completely watch it.

I give this movie 2 stars because I wasn’t very impressed but the acting was really good and believable.

Wubbzy’s Egg-Cellent Easter – A Hit with Preschoolers

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

WubbzyEggCell.jpgLooking for a fun Easter-themed DVD that’s not religious? WOW! WOW! WUBBZY!: WUBBZY’S EGG-CELLENT EASTER suits the bill. All the episodes succeed in pushing through the pro-social messages that Wubbzy does so well such as teamwork, friendship, even healthy exericise. With the First Lady pushing fitness, we love seeing producers picking up on the theme. Starting preschoolers on a life long pathway of good health and fitness makes sense.

This DVD focuses on the Easter Bunny, eggs, and springtime rather than religious messaging so even non-Christians can appreciate it.  The episodes include: Eggs Over Easy, Big Bunny Blues, Flower Day Parade, Watch the Birdie, Wubbzy Bounces Back and Flight of the Flutterfly.

If you haven’t hooked onto Wow! Wow! Wubbzy yet for your preschoolers, maybe this is the perfect one to get you started!

Move Over Thomas! Here Comes Chuggington

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Chuggington.jpgThomas & Friends has garnered the “train” genre of the preschool media market for ever since it was first broadcast in 1984. But now, we’ve got a new series, Chuggington, which offers a bit more upbeat pace, fun & bright colors, and easy to understand messaging. Many of our jurors have switched their focus to the “new kid on the block” which they feel is more suitable for 21st century kids.

This first DVD of the TV series offers 6 episodes: Braking Brewster, Clunky Wilson, Can’t Catch Koko, Old Puffer Pete’s Tour, Koko on Call and Hodge and the Magnet. I encourage you to try it, if you haven’t seen it yet. In particular, we found that girls preferred it over Thomas. But really, girls or boys, I think you won’t be disappointed.
