The 1960s soap opera “Dark Shadows” has been reincarnated with the deft hand and somewhat twisted humor of master storyteller and acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton. His signature gloom perfectly suits the storyline. KIDS FIRST! youth film critic and host of the weekly Coming Attractions radio show Raven Devanney (age 14) rates the film on a scale of one to five, and gives it a six!

Ratings that good make it a probable shoe-in for next year’s KIDS FIRST! Best Awards. This year’s awards, for film and TV shows of 2011, are being considered at this very moment. Winners will be announced here in the KIDS FIRST! newsletter next week, but do take a gander at all the deserving shows that were nominated, listed by age-appropriateness on the KIDS FIRST! website.

Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows is a hilarious movie about a man named Barnabas Collins, who is cursed by an evil witch when he refuses to give her his love. Turned into a vampire, Barnabas is locked away in a coffin for two centuries. Now, freed by unsuspecting construction workers, Barnabas finds that his home town of Collinsport has drastically changed. He must learn to fit into the ’70s while protecting his family, restoring Collinsport to its former glory and ridding himself of the evil witch, Angelique, who cursed him to be a creature forced to hide in dark shadows.

I absolutely loved this movie. Johnny Depp, who plays Barnabas Collins, does fantastic! Johnny is one of my all-time favorite actors and when he teams up with director Tim Burton, you know it’s a film worth seeing. The cinematography was great because of the gloominess that you will often find in Tim Burton’s films, but they found a flawless way to throw in the bright colors of the ’70s. The special effects were great, too, especially in the end when Angelique’s skin starts to crack; she really looks as if she is made out of porcelain. Something that did bother me about the visuals was that the blood in the film looked ’way too fake considering that it is a vampire movie.

My favorite character would have to be that daughter of the Collins family played by Chloe Moretz, Carolyn Stoddard. One, she is my favorite young actress; two, she plays a moody, melodramatic, angst-y teenager perfectly. The acting in this film is priceless because there is a lot of overacting, but not in a cheesy way; it is done very purposefully and it gives a wonderful, comedic feel to dramatic situations.

I suggest this film for ages 13 and up because of sexual situations, mild drug use and language. On a scale of 1-5, I would give this film 6 stars because it far surpassed my expectations! Be sure to see Dark Shadows in a theater near you with all of your friends!!

Audiences at the Dallas International and Portland International film festivals gave First Position filmmaker Bess Kargman a first place in the audience awards, as did the staff at the San Francisco Docfest. In her review, below, KIDS FIRST! youth film critic Julia Chestnut (age 11) shares many reasons why people connect with this film and how it inspired her.

I think the IFC film First Position is great. It is an award-winning documentary that is inspiring and captivating.

The actors play themselves as the film shows the audience what a life of ballet is all about. Each of the six dancers is completely dedicated to their sport as they prepare for a chance to enter one of the world’s most prestigious ballet competitions, the Youth America Grand Prix.

The six young and very gifted dancers all want a contract to go to the Youth America Grand Prix. They work hard to become one of the very best young dancers in the world. They work through bloody feet, horrible injuries and relentless exhaustion. The dancers are Aran Bell, Gaya Yemini, Michaela Deprince, Miko Fogarty, Rebecca Houseknecht and Joan Zamora.
 
Aran Bell has been dancing since he was four years old. He loves dancing and doesn’t care what other people think. He puts aside the pain and dances through it. Gaya, an adorable dancer from Israel, was inspired by Aran’s graceful dancing. She can really make dancing come alive! Michaela is incredible as she dances through excruciating pain in the finals. She is so inspiring to watch and graceful as a swan. The entire audience is cheering for her. Miko is willing to give up everything to dance. She doesn’t have much time for school, friends or outside activities. Rebecca is known as “Barbie.” She is extremely flexible and beautiful, like Barbie. Joan’s family lives in Columbia while he dances his heart out in another country. His passion and motivation is inspiring to watch.

My favorite part is when Michaela dances through so much pain in her Achilles tendons. Despite the pain, she is flawless as she floats across the stage. I love feeling like I was living their hard-working life right along with them.

First Position is a great movie for people who love dancing and for people who are dedicated to any sport. The incredible talent will inspire you to try anything! If you want to find out who advances to the finals and wins a scholarship or $50,000 contract, find this movie at a theater near you.

“Bam!” “Ka-Pow!” “Bonk!” – as they say in comic books. While that’s not really what the superheroes of The Avengers have to say (they are much more articulate), their actions are fairly true to their comic book roots. KIDS FIRST! youth film critics Julianna Noone (age 12) and Talia Rashba (age 11) each give the film a full 5 out of 5 stars, and are quite articulate themselves on their reasons for the top rating.

“This action-packed and comedy-filled film is a movie that not only will appeal to comic fans but all movie-goers, as it has a great storyline and strong cast to support it,” says Julianna. And Talia is equally enthusiastic: “This movie is absolutely fantastic! It is packed with a ton of action and humor and will transport you into an amazing supernatural world where it is all about the good guys fighting the bad.”

The Avengers

Looking for a hero? Well, look no further, because The Avengers is in theaters everywhere! This action-packed and comedy-filled film is a movie that not only will appeal to comic book fans but all movie-goers, as it has a great storyline and a strong cast to support it. This movie will attract all demographics and has already set many box office records.

The basis of this movie is the world is under threat from another world, Chitauri, and there is a need for more than just all the world’s defenses to save it. The world needs the “Avenger Initiative”, which is a plan put together by S.H.I.E.L.D., an international peace-keeping agency, which calls for S.H.I.E.L.D. to bring together some of the world’s greatest heroes: Iron Man/Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr; Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth; Captain America/Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans; The Hulk/Dr. Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo; Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff , played by Scarlett Johansson; and Hawkeye/Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner. Nick Fury, played by the always intense Samuel L. Jackson, leads the S.H.I.E.L.D. agency. There is a great supporting cast as well, that rounds out a star-studded cast.

Now, I have watched all of the individual movie releases of The Hulk (both movies), Thor, Captain America and both Iron Man movies and loved them all, but, as most, was concerned whether they would work together to create a great movie. Well, they have done that and more, with a storyline that allows the main characters to, at times, shine on their own but at other times pairs them up perfectly to bring great balance to the story.

 Josh Whedon, the director and co-writer, and Zach Penn, co-writer, do a great job in blending the action sequences in with very well-timed comedic moments. I also love how they bring so many different levels of conflict into the movie. There is brother vs. brother, between Thor and his evil brother Loki (played brilliantly by Tom Hiddleston), the film’s antagonist. There is internal conflict each of the main characters has with themselves, as we watch Dr. Banner trying to control his inner demons. And there is the overall conflict of our world vs. the other world, called Chitauri.

There is also the conflict between the heroes themselves, which leads to many of the funniest parts of the film. Two of my favorite scenes are these parts of the movie. First, when the heroes first come together on the S.H.I.E.L.D. aircraft, they are discussing the devastation that Loki has brought to Earth. Thor jumps to Loki’s defense and states, “He’s my brother,” to which the Black Widow responds, “He has killed 80 people in two days.” Thor responds, “He’s adopted!” and it’s one of the many laugh-out-loud moments.

My favorite character(s) would be the Avengers as a whole, as they each have their own unique and likable traits. I love the special effects, particularly the touch screen computers that float in the air, and the use of CGI in this film as it was worked into the live-action sequences. The CGI Hulk was especially well done and was much more human-like in this film and funny as well.

This movie is great for all ages and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. It’s a must-see movie for comic book and non-comic book fans, and I think many will see it more than once, as I know I plan to.

The Avengers

This movie was absolutely fantastic! It is packed with a ton of action and humor and will transport you into an amazing supernatural world where it is all about the good guys fighting the bad.

The story is about a group of famous superheroes that come together to defeat the evil Loki, who has stolen a powerful energy cube that he intends to use to take over the world. The superheroes include Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye. Each one has a unique and special supernatural power that they use to help them do their job. At first, the superheroes fight about being a team, but, eventually, they work together to complete the mission.

The Avengers could have ended up being a typical superhero movie, but it isn’t. Because there are so many heroes, it is much more creative and entertaining. The Avengers is packed with fabulous actors. Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man. Just like he was in the Iron Man movie, he thinks he is better than everyone else, but luckily, he is really quite funny so you end up liking him a lot. Captain America (Chris Evans) is strong and serious, and he is always ready to get the job done. Actor Mark Ruffalo plays the ferocious green form known as the Incredible Hulk. He really stands out and takes over the scenes he is in. Superhero Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has some of the most incredible battle scenes. And Black Widow, portrayed by the beautiful Scarlett Johansson, is the one who convinces the others to put aside their differences and work with each other.

An interesting fact is that actor Lou Ferrigno, who has played The Hulk in almost every film since 1978, is actually the Hulk’s voice in the movie.

The Avengers is written and directed by Joss Whedon, who does an amazing job. He makes sure that there is a lot of humor in the movie and that the action scenes really grab your attention. The special effects were incredible. The superheroes change from their everyday selves into their supernatural selves in an interesting and fun way. The fight scenes and explosions are unbelievable. Also, there is a really neat headquarters for the agency that you just have to see for yourself!

Even though it is rated PG-13, I think kids ages 11, as well as all adults, will love this movie, especially if action is their thing. I am giving this film a 5 out of 5 stars and recommending that you see it right away!

There is an abundance of film festivals offering great cinema experiences for movie lovers – and KIDS FIRST! is helping expand what they do for families and young people. Leslie Feibleman, director of special programs and community cinema for both the Newport Beach Film Festival (which presented its 13th edition this past April 26-May 3) and the Orange County Film Society, says, “I first spoke to Ann [Church] and Ranny [Levy] back in 2002 during our search for new films for the Festival’s newly launched Family Film Series. I knew after the first conversation that it would be the start of a long-lasting partnership (and friendship, too).”

In fact, KIDS FIRST! is always looking for new partners – big and small – to play our films. Exactly what has been KIDS FIRST!’s impact on the Newport Beach Film Festival? Feibleman has a lot to share on that topic:

KIDS FIRST!: Tell us about the children’s programming, which has such a big part in the Newport Beach Film Festival.
Leslie Feibleman: The family programming rocks! Seeking to engage young people and their families into the world of cinema and culture, the Newport Beach Film Festival launched its inaugural Family Film Series back in 2003 and has since presented over 100 films and several events, geared toward toddlers, school-age children, tweens, teens, parents and grandparents. Each year, the Family Film Series gives filmgoers of all ages an opportunity to view a unique collection of refreshing cinematic works from around the globe, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short, animated and student films.

With the goal of making the Festival experience interactive, educational and fun for young filmgoers, the Festival brings out filmmakers, documentary subjects, actors, scientists and artists for Q&A sessions, school visits, workshops, live entertainment and autograph sessions. The Festival also celebrates young filmmakers as creators with our Youth Film Showcase and Teen Screen programs, designed to spotlight short films created by filmmakers 18 years and under.

The Festival continues its reach to young audiences year ’round through its collaborations with Orange County arts organizations. Over the years the Festival has curated family films for the Orange County Film Society, Orange County Museum of Art’s Target Free Second Sundays, Arts Orange County’s Imagination Celebration event, Free Movie Mondays at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and Peter & Mary Muth Center Earth Day and family environmental events.

In 2008, the Newport Beach Film Festival received the prestigious honor of “Best Children’s Festival” for its Family Film Series at the 9th Annual KIDS FIRST! Best Day and Awards Celebration.

KF: Newport Beach Film Festival and KIDS FIRST! — what are the special strengths each brings to the other’s programming and mission?
Feibleman: The collaboration between the Newport Beach Film Festival and KIDS FIRST! has been fabulous. Both the NBFF and KIDS FIRST! are dedicated to championing the works of independent filmmakers and providing quality film programming for young people.

Over the past several years, KIDS FIRST! has enriched the Festival experience for our young filmgoers by providing us with a host of incredible family-friendly and award-winning films from around the globe, world premiere screenings (This is Your Ocean: Sharks, The Adventures of Food Boy, Sandlot 3), in-person talent (Alyson Stoner, Brittany Curran) , Skyped-in talent (Lucas Grabeel), appearances by filmmaker and documentary subjects, retail partnerships (Build-A-Bear Workshop®), costumed characters, performers (Steve Axtell), autograph signings, goodie bags and added press coverage.

In addition to the programming, the Festival truly values the experience, resources, innovative ideas, enthusiasm and distribution opportunities for filmmakers provided by KIDS FIRST! We share our knowledge, insights, ideas, technology tips, film industry connections and some great memories.

Together, we cross-promote via social media platforms, on-screen ads, printed material, press releases and newsletters. The Festival is proud to offer KIDS FIRST! filmmakers a venue to showcase their films to new audiences. We host filmmaker networking receptions by the beach and give filmmakers an opportunity to connect with film industry professionals, the media and other filmmakers in a relaxed, casual setting.
 
KF: This year’s festival just ended. What, to you, were the highlights?
Feibleman: The 2012 Newport Beach Festival presented more than 15 exciting red carpet world premieres, including the debut of Magic Camp in our Family Film Series. Highlights included the Opening Night Gala with culinary tastings from more than 35 restaurants, International Spotlight celebrations, Special Programs (Music, Art, Architecture + Design, Action Sports, Environmental Film Series), a thought-provoking documentary program, an expanded animation showcase and an eclectic shorts programs. The Festival hosted free filmmaking seminars and music-infused nightly filmmaker receptions under the stars. It was amazing to see such strong filmmaker participation, compelling on-screen performances and fascinating interactive Q&A sessions with filmmakers. This year, the Festival introduced two new venues to the public: the new Port Theater in Corona del Mar and the newly renovated Island Cinema in Fashion Island.

KF: How long have you been involved with the festival, and how did that come about?
Feibleman: The adventure began ten years ago. As a full-time stay-at-home mother of two children back then (busy working a part-time design job and serving on boards of various arts organizations), I was ready to further pursue my passion for film, the arts, community building, education and volunteerism. Soon after attending the Festival, while it was still in its infancy, I saw huge potential for this young, blossoming organization and sensed a strong need for new program leaders.

Armed with some ideas, plenty of energy and a willingness to explore new avenues, I made a call to the NBFF’s executive director (a fellow Cal Berkeley alumni friend of mine) and soon found myself immersed in the exciting world of independent film. In 2002, I came on board to launch and curate the Festival’s “Special Programs” (Family, Action Sports Film Series, later followed by Art, Architecture + Design, Environmental, Music Film Series) and the NBFF’s year-round “Community Cinema” programs (Cinema Orange, Cinema Sage Hill).

Over the years, I have focused my energy on artistic programming, creating new cultural partnerships, expanding the Festival’s educational programs and engaging new audiences (especially young people and their families). I have also had the pleasure of serving as a film juror on the KIDS FIRST! jury over the past few years. (The Family Film Series currently stands as the NBFF’s longest-running special program and in 2012 was collectively curated by our NBFF programming team).

We are incredibly grateful to Ann Church, Ranny Levy and the KIDS FIRST! team for their dedication, enthusiasm and for helping to make the Newport Beach Film Festival Family Film Series a success.

A horse with a big heart, wide-open-space scenery and great country music, all packaged in a heartwarming tale of good overcoming adversity – this is a movie that has it all. Released May 1 from 20th Century Fox in a Walmart and Sam’s Club exclusive (and also in a Flicka collection available on amazon.com), it has our KIDS FIRST! youth critics Brianna Beaton (age 12) and Julianna Noone (age 12) also singing its praises. The bond between horse and rider is one of the special aspects that touches Brianna most, and she shares the insight that the bond is what “allows them to trust each other to ride and compete.” “… Flicka plays an important role in helping people overcome obstacles in their lives,” observes Julianna, sharing the movie’s important message that “if you always give your best effort, the outcome doesn’t really matter because you gave it your all.”

Clint Black, country music superstar and Grammy Award winner, stars alongside wife Lisa Hartman. The Blu-ray and DVD includes a never-before-seen music video as well as  two behind-the-scenes featurettes on the making of the film that give more insight on the singer’s involvement with the Flicka franchise. 

Flicka: Country Pride

This is a very moving and touching film with great country music.

I truly like this film because of all the bonding it has between a horse and her rider. They bond quickly, which allows them to trust each other to ride and compete. The acting by everyone is really good; however Stephanie Meyers (Siobhan Williams) acts extremely well and she stands out from the rest. It really makes me not like Stephanie because of how well she is portraying this mean character. The cinematography gives you great pictures of Flicka with her amazing jumping capabilities and allows you to appreciate this beautiful horse. I love the countryside — it is soooo pretty and you can see why someone would just absolutely love being in the country with nature. It’s a very relaxing atmosphere.

Flicka: Country Pride is a sequel to Flicka 2. It tells the story of Kelly (Kacey Rohl) and a wild mustang whose name is Flicka. They quickly bond and Kelly hopes to get Flicka into an upcoming competition. But the competition is fast approaching, and Kelly faces the additional stress of a rival trainer who plays dirty along with a growing fear of having to sell the stable. Then Toby (country singer Clint Black) gets involved to save the day. Good

Directed by Michael Damian (Flicka 2, Marley & Me), Flicka: Country Pride also has great country music by Clint Black that will definitely satisfy your craving for great country music. Even though I’m not a big country music fan, the music is still pleasant to listen to. My favorite part of the film is when Flicka first appears — she is so pretty.

In watching this film, I feel a great message would be to never lose hope. Always keep in sight your dreams and what you believe in. Be determined and focused!

Although this is mainly a family film, it is rated G and I recommend it to ages 5 to 12. This will definitely appeal to all horse lovers at heart.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars because, while it certainly has a good plot, it is just a tad drawn out and I kind of knew what to expect.

Flicka: Country Pride is absolutely a good film and I can almost promise that you will enjoy it as much as I do. It gallops onto DVD the first of May. So go gather up everyone and enjoy this family film.

Flicka: Country Pride is a great film for the entire family. This film stars Kacey Rohl (Red Riding Hood) as Kelly, Lisa Hartman (Back To You and Me) as Lindy, country music star Clint Black (Flicka 2) as Toby, Max Lloyd Jones (Girl Fight) as Briggs and Siobhan Williams (Radio Rebel) as Stephanie.

This is a wonderful and heartwarming story about a family struggling to overcome a tragedy and difficult times and how they work through this, with the help of some friends. This film is about a very special horse — Flicka, a beautiful black mustang — and the special bond the wild horse builds with Kelly. After Kelly’s father dies, she shuts everyone out of her life, but Flicka slowly breaks her down and gives her some hope.

Flicka comes into Kelly’s life along with her owner, Toby, who becomes the new stable manager after Kelly’s father dies. Just as Flicka does for Kelly, Toby is there for Lindy, Kelly’s mom, when she needs it the most.

One of my favorite scenes is when Kelly and Stephanie battle in a riding competition over a boy they are fighting over. In this scene, Stephanie repeatedly tries to kick Kelly and knock her off her horse and win no matter what. This backfires on her, though, as it is Stephanie who falls off her horse. My other favorite scene is when Toby is working in his new office and reads the writing on the wall: “If you give it your all you’ve already won.” This is a phrase that Kelly’s dad liked to use and follow, and it reminds Kelly of her father. It’s a touching point in the movie and is very moving. It’s a good message for everyone to try and follow, in that if you always give your best effort, the outcome doesn’t really matter because you gave it your all.

My favorite character is Flicka because, even though Flicka is a horse, in this film as well as the first two films Flicka plays an important role in helping people overcome obstacles in their lives.

The film is shot on location in British Columbia, Canada, and the countryside is beautiful and makes you want to go outside and go horseback riding. The stunt coordinator, Kirk Jarrett, did a great job in setting the action scenes on the horses. The riding scenes were well shot and fun to watch.

 I rate this film 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend this film as well as the first two Flicka films for ages 5 to 105. Kids of all ages, particularly horse lovers, will enjoy these wholesome family-friendly films. Look for this film on DVD and Blu-ray starting May 1st. I can’t wait to watch this film again!
